Back when Platinum Dunes and MGM's remake of The Amityville Horror came out, we were supposed to post an exclusive interview with the man who started it all- George Lutz. But after much time talking with the man, we came to two conclusions: He wasn't getting paid and he wanted to hurt the movie because of it. Want to hear the main reason why we wouldn't post the interview? Because George told us that he lost the rights to his story when he refused to take a lie detector test- so why on Earth would he be pissed that he wasn't getting paid? His new excuse: the movie makes him look bad. Well I guess spreading bullsh-t stories tends to have that effect- ever hear of the telephone game George? Fangoria has learned that George Lutz, whose experiences with his family in the infamous Long Island house inspired both AMITYVILLE HORROR features, has filed suit against the filmakers and production companies/distributors associated with this year’s AMITYVILLE remake.
The complaint alleges that the movie, which depicts the Lutz character played by Ryan Reynolds going violently insane under the house’s evil influence, “is defamatory per se in that [it] exposes Lutz to hatred, contempt, ridicule and obloquy because it shows him committing various crimes including, but not limited to, premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, and animal cruelty,” and thus violates terms of an agreement between Lutz and the film’s original producers that the movie would not defame or libel him.
Lutz is also suing over breach of contract regarding a box-office bonus payment that was part of his contract with those original producers. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court June 10; representing Lutz is Larry Zerner, who was FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III’s Shelley once upon a time before becoming an entertainment lawyer and also repped screenwriter Daniel Farrands in his plagiarism suit (settled amicably) against the makers of DARKNESS FALLS.
