Wes Craven Talks ‘Scream 4’ Script Issues, New Trilogy
Over the course of production there were a flurry of rumors that genre writer Ehren Kruger (The Ring, The Ring Two, Blood and Chocolate, The Skeleton Key, Scream 3) had come aboard to rewrite much of Kevin Williamson’s Scream 4 script. While it was more rumor than fact, no party ever really openly spoke about the situation.
Now that Craven is is post production, with an April 15 release date in sight, the iconic director opened up to UK mag Total Film and revealed exactly what went down on set in Ann Arbor, Michigan. You’ll find the full story inside…
Excerpts from Total Film:
On the screenplay: “During production, Craven tweeted that he was “no longer in control of the script” as Scream 3 writer Ehren Kruger came in to rework Williamson’s draft. “I was just stating the fact,” he recalls. “In some ways it’s a Wes Craven film, and in way it’s not entirely, because it’s not a script I have control of. It’s ultimately controlled by what the studio wants in the script. My job is much more bringing whatever experience and expertise and creativity I can.” He pauses. “Look, there was a bumpy period when things shifted over from Kevin to Ehren. I signed up to do a script by Kevin and unfortunately that didn’t go all the way through the shooting. But it certainly is Kevin’s script and concept and ideas and themes.”
On a potential new trilogy: “And would Craven be up for any more if this Screamed up enough box office? “When I initially met with Kevin, he sketched out what the next two would be, and I found it really fascinating,” he concludes. “A lot depends on whether they come up with scripts to flesh out. But certainly, I’m up for it, if the script is there. It’s a fascinating thing to do two trilogies in a career.”

Christopher Landon to Helm Feature Adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s ‘The Final Girl Support Group’
A new feature adaptation of author Grady Hendrix‘s slasher book The Final Girl Support Group is now on the way from Paramount Pictures, and Deadline reports that it’s found its director in Christopher Landon (Drop, Happy Death Day).
The two previously collaborated on My Best Friend’s Exorcism.
In The Final Girl Support Group, “Lynette is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. For more than a decade, she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, working to put their lives back together. Then one woman misses a meeting, and their worst fears are realized—someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again, piece by piece.”
“But the thing about final girls is that no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.”
I wrote in my novel review for BD, “Hendrix puts his characters through the absolute wringer. It’s a bloody, vicious voyage for the flawed heroine, both physically and emotionally. In terms of action and horror, Support Group delivers breakneck pacing and thrills.”
Five years ago, Andy Muschietti & Barbara Muschietti (Mama, It, It Chapter Two) were attached to produce a planned series adaptation for HBO Max alongside Charlize Theron. While Theron is no longer producing, the Muschiettis remain on board under their Double Dream label.
Paramount Pictures is also developing Hendrix’s sci-fi novella, BadAsstronauts.
