‘The Toxic Avenger’ Franchise Acquired for Remake, Multiple Films, TV Series and Comics

“Captain Planet” anyone? Troma’s igniting fire will be roaring back to life as Charlie Corwin’s Original Media, a partnership with Dutch reality TV giant Endemol, has financed the acquisition of rights to Troma’s The Toxic Avenger franchise that includes four sequels, an animated TV series and comic books, reports Deadline. According to the site the group intends to turn Toxie into a green superhero for these environmentally conscious times. Akiva Goldsman (Paranormal Activity 2, Jonah Hex), Richard Saperstein (The Mist and the other Troma remake, Mother’s Day) and Corwin are all producing. Original Media will finance the development of a script, with writers to be hired shortly. In the original ’86 film, Melvin accidentally ends up in a vat of toxic waste. The devastating results then have a transmogrification effect, his alter ego is released, and the Toxic Avenger is born. The local mop boy is now the local Superhero. I’m not sure how I feel about an environmental spin, but either way it’ll be cool to see a big budget Toxie movie, right? Have your say. Darren Lynn Bousman is in post-production on his remake of Troma’s Mother’s Day for Brett Ratner.
