I've been wondering why Columbia Pictures has yet to get Ghostbusters III off the ground. While Bill Murray has always had fingers pointed in his direction, there has always been something about Ivan Reitman being attached to direct that made me raise an eyebrow. I know he's the man behind the first, but his recent years haven't treated him so well (Evolution, My Super Ex-Girlfriend), so it comes as no surprise that Columbia Pictures wants his off the sequel. Read on for the skinny and then have your say.
"The studio's strategy is to revitalize the franchise for next year by having the original 'busters train a dramatically younger crew in Ghostbusters III, while a correspondingly younger director handles things behind the camera," writes Vulture. "However, Reitman's old contract — made at the height of his and Ovitz's powers — still gives him exceptional creative control over the series, including director approval."
Even more interesting, some of the stars can kill the project with a raise of their hand.
"In fact, a source tells us that Reitman and all three original principals (Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis … sorry, Ernie Hudson!) have a deal that says that if any of the four of them don’t like any element of a new Ghostbusters, they can singlehandedly veto and kill the project; it has to be unanimously approved before going forward."
This is a huge franchise for Columbia Pictures and a success could reinvigorate the series. Would they purposely can it just because they couldn't hire a newer, younger director? What do you guys think of the situation?
Like already mentioned it's quite understandable why the want off but that doesn't mean he couldn't make a good movie. I wouldn't complain if they'd get his son, Jason or Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) on board as director!
Simple. Get Ivan's son, Jason Reitman, to direct it! He's young, can direct comedy and I'm sure he could pull off a great Ghostbusters movie. Plus, I'm sure if Ivan wasn't directing it he would be just fine 'passing the torch' to his offspring. Jason's an Oscar winner, Ghostbusters 3 is a HUGE project; It's a perfect fit.
Hey now, My Super Ex-GF might have been trash but Evolution was a fun movie, so give the guy at least a little credit.
Regardless, this movie will suck dick no matter who directs it.
I think it would be interesting if you had Rob Zombie or Quinten Tarrantino direct it! I love Ghostbusters and I don't think they'll can it due to the director if the paycheck is right. Whoever does it I just pray they do a good job!
Steven Spielberg!!!!! He'd never do it, not his bag baby. Quentine and Rob Zombie was mentioned above... yah that should never happen. Might as well put in Eli Roth in there too.
Yeah, I'm with Bill M. now. Just let this die! If they made a straight sequel with the original cast as leads then I'd be on board, but this training younger guys with a young director has made me lose all interest. Reitman needs to write something original and just bring the guys back for that.
This does not sound good at all. I would really love to see another film, but if it isn't true or genuine...no thanks. But then again, Ghostbusters deserve to see new fans and a new life. I don't know how I feel about all this, but I hope that things work out and we see it eventually befor Bill actually becomes a ghost.
Why do we need a third Ghostbusters? I love the original, and really enjoy the second one, but to get a third I would have preferred them to make it when the cast was still mildly up to it. I don'y blame Murray for not being very interested - he has moved on from these kind of roles (with he exception of Zombieland). On that note, I really miss him doing comedy :(
But yeah, on a more positive note, they could make this really cool... give us some kick ass new ghosts and characters; I'll stay optimistic.
well said choochoo.....come on find a director already! i want to see this movie! (as long as stupid seth rogan and/or jonah hill dont star in it then i am game)
Well, with Bill Murray not really interested and the studio not wanting Ivan Reitman back, I guess this article simply proves that we won't be seeing part 3 with the original cast and crew, in other words no Ghostbusters 3. At least no GB3 is a lot better than a NEW and younger Ghostbusters, IMO.
There's no way around the "training younger ghostbusters" thing - even if Reitman does direct. They wouldn't make it only with the original cast, cause then it'd just wind up being "lol look how old they are" most of the time. But like someone else said, I'd rather it fail knowing it was in the best possible hands, than having some younger "hipper" director behind the lens.
Somebody wake me up when the studios get their heads out of their asses.
It's obvious that they are trying to re-boot the franchise with these new recruits. So why not have the originals have their big finale and somebody knew direct the next one.
I'm pretty sure that Rick Moranis will kill the project
