The Odd in French Sci-Fi Pic ‘Rabbits’

We just caught wind of a super bizarre French sci-fi drama Rabbits, which will be helmed by Jean-Julien Collette from a screenplay by Collette and Olivier Tollet (tongue twister!). With a budget of nearly $5m, production isn’t slated to begin until 2010 as they’re still developing the screenplay. We were able to conjur up this concept art and a long disjointed synopsis (thanks to translator Ben).

In the late eighties, four young people, affluent and socially protected, decided to found a community far from the modern world and values that govern it.

MAX, a sort of exuberant dandy in English, is the instigator of the project. CHARLOTTE, a cold beauty, is the companion of the latter. RUBEN, a Spanish plump without ambition, is a childhood friend of Max. And Caro, a plump brunette completely paumée is the sister of Charlotte. They settled in a large secluded property purchased for the occasion in the mountains and get to know John and little brother, come help them in their early work. These are two young peasants, employees of the father of Max.

After a few days, a strange phenomenon occurs: they are trapped in the property by something they can not distinguish, but akin to an invisible wall. They are trying by all means of escape, but note that the wall surrounds, condemning them to remain within the confines of the property. Terrified, they slowly discover that the phenomenon leads to laws that exceed the total. They no longer feel the need to feed or hydrate. They also observe a curious phenomenon of recovery organic accelerates reconstitution of all tissues if they are damaged. Resigned, they can only submit to the obvious: continue to live with this phenomenon that they wanted no trouble and keeps them from all consequences.

The years go by without that things start changing. The group is torn away from each other while getting closer. The phenomenon is experienced as a miracle or as a hell from which it is impossible to escape.

A new element comes one day disrupt the community, they realize they age more. Stuck in a garden of Eden they had sought, isolated in the mountains as they had hoped, they discover with horror that nothing can happen to them …
