'Let Me In' Dark and Scarier Than 'Twilight'

After kissing Twilight's arse for way too long, director Matt Reeves reveals in an interview over at MTV that Let Me In, his English-language redo of Let The Right One In, will be much darker and scarier than the Stephenie Meyers' adaptation. It sure as hell better be! Beyond the break you can read a few tid-bits from the interview. Overture Films has slated Let Me In for release on October 1, 2010.

One of the main things I know readers are worried about is how different this will be from the original. Reeves says he'll find his own piece to bring to the tale:

"One of the things I really wanted to do was find my own way into the story while still being very, very reverent to the beautiful film and to the wonderful story that they created," Reeves tells MTV. "And so the story in many ways follows the same trajectory. I really wanted to put you, even more so, into the point of view of the boy and understand his childhood as vividly as it comes across in the book."

On avoiding comparison to TWILIGHT:

"I think that it has obviously really touched a nerve and tapped into a very, very deep vein. To me, the thing about genre stories that is the most interesting thing is what you do with the metaphor of the genre. You can do a grand, sweeping love story, like "Twilight," and use that metaphor of the two people that are just being torn apart and the aching-ness of it, and that's a great fantasy. I think that what people respond to in "Twilight" is the fantasy of it. It's such a grand, romantic fantasy, and in a way, the reason why I think there is room for a film like ours is, though it's a vampire film, it uses it in such a different way."

He continues, "Whereas "Twilight" is kind of a fantasy, this will be a darker, scarier kind of journey. Obviously, "True Blood" is also really big these days too, and that's a different thing using the sexual side. I think it's really about what sort of emphasis the story takes and how you use the metaphor. The amazing thing about genre films is the way to smuggle in different kinds of themes and things worthy of exploration. I think what so struck me about this story is that what it is exploring is so different and so real."

"It sure as hell better fucking be darker than Twilight!!" Took the words right out of my mouth. It's a remake to 'Let The Right One In', for crying out loud!

Watch, the studios will hack it up at the last minute to ride the twatlight fad, even if Reeves himself has no say in it.

Fuck. Let the Right One In remake in the hands of someone who likes twilight? LET ME IN SURE AS HELL BETTER BE DARKER AND SCARIER. That's like saying that "The Descent" should be a scarier monster movie than "Gremlins."

I'm sorry but why is 'TWILIGHT' even mentioned on this website??? I mean seriously. It's not horror. I agree with some post about a year ago. In a years time BD is gonna be Ambercrombie splattered with a little red and black. Jeez man, can we please weed this teen piss out of this website.

i'm not about this remake but some of you are SO freaking melodramatic. where does it say that he "likes TWILIGHT"? so just because he doesn't publicly trash the movie and is courteous to it and it's makers means he loves it? read into things much?

Actually, the success of TWILIGHT is pretty goddamned scary...

@djblack1313 Dude, the fact that it's even mentioned on a horror site is a joke. That's not reading into anything. It's stating the facts. This is a Horror site (or so i think??) Twilight is not horror. So, the mere fact that the movie is even brought up in Horror news headlines gives it that credit. It's pussy movies like this that water down the horror community man. Grow balls and join us son!

Twilight and Let the Right One In shouldn't even be in the same sentence. There's nothing comparable about the two, other than they are vampire movies. And both movies take enough liberties with certain vampire characteristics enough to really make the comparison in "name only".

I hate to break this to a whole bunch of morons but twilight is not dark and not scary nor is it supposed to be . it's an epic romantic horror fantsy. let the one right one in the original was a solid if overhyped film and the remake will probably suck big time!!!! and guess what u wouldn't have to try very hard to be darker or scarier than twilight

It's no big deal why he mentioned it, it's a fact, like it or not, Twilight is HUGE. They are both vampire stories with romantic angles. He's explaining how he will do it different, more violent and scary which I hope so. I did not or have any interest in seeing Twilight. Looks a little too much 90210/WB teen kinda stuff for my tastes. It may great and that's ok if you think so. They are making this regardless, so if your truly a horror fan, give this a chance and see what they come up with. Would it really be so bad if we had a really good remake ? I say the more great horror, the merrier !!

I hate the title LET ME IN. Lame. And - "I really wanted to put you, even more so, into the point of view of the boy and understand his childhood as vividly as it comes across in the book." - EXPOSITION TIME! Hollywood has a knack for unsubtlety and over-explaining everything.

you can't beat the original, it's impossible

Hey Count Orlock..."LET ME IN" is supposedly a HAMMER FILMS co-production...NOT Hollywood. And not ALL horror films are just for "Horror Fans". "Twilight" is a supernatural, romantic fantasy. "Let the Right One In" was a "coming-of-age, romantic horror flick. So maybe a smart director will add subtle fangs and more explicit carnage. But, hopefully they won't resort to showing us a vampire-child's sealed vagina like the original did..jeeez!

This is not sounding good. Whether "Twilight" is popular or not, why in the hell did he feel the need to reference such an atrocious wreck of a movie? He doesn't seem to understand that fans of "Twilight" are NOT the type of viewers "Let Me In" should be aiming to attract. If he believes that, then the movie is already doomed. If anything this remake should be DARKER than "LTROI" and more faithful to the book. Of course, he may surprise us, but the things he said don't bode well for this film.

Let The Right One In was overhyped and not a patch on the original source material. A remake can only improve on that film as they took one of the main themes out, i.e. Hakan/paedophilia. Let Me In already has one major setback, Reeves has made Eli a girl whereas anyone who has read the book knows that Eli is a castrated boy and this aspect adds a whole new dimension to the relationship between Oskar and Eli. Yet more American conservative bullshit imho. If Reeves follows the book, Hakan should have a greater role and the film should easily get an R/18 certificate... but somehow I doubt the studio will allow him such freedom (the gender aspect already being a case in point!). Tbh, I don't hold much hope for ever seeing a decent adaptation of the novel.

I so do not give a fuck about this travesty. I loved the book and realize the original film only touched on Eli and Oskar...still it is a masterful peice of film making. This "remake" literally turns my stomach. If only David Lynch would direct it....

Why is he even mentioning Twilight?? It's a remake of Let The Right One In, it's SUPPOSED to be darker and scarier than Twilight, we all know that.

I love how one person goes on a tirade about them mentioning Twilight and every idiot just jumps in on the bandwagon and repeats the same exact thing. I despise Twilight as much as the next horror buff, but the source from this interview is from MTV. This is not a BD exclusive, nor is it advertised as such..thusly, Twilight is obviously going to be brought up. Even when Let The Right One In was being first shown, the Twi-hards compared it to their beloved trash novel, so of course they would do the same for a remake in their own country. I say some of you guys need to breathe a little and if you're nt interested, then don't watch the movie. Also Reeves never once praised Twilight, nor did he slander it. He discussed the impact it has had, and whether you like the god awful series or not, there is no denying the impact it has had on pop culture. That would be like sticking your thumb up your ass and convincing yourself that Harry Potter was a children's series and didn't have an impact on anyone because you prefer Gandolf over Dumbledore or something. In any case, I'm curious to this. The cast is fantastic, the director seems to have his head screwed on straight and he knows how to respond to some of the stupidest questions and yet give an intelligent answer that actually has to do with his film. Good luck Reeves!

cant they just let the original talk for itself? This is a useless remake if I ever saw one....

Seems like this discussion is sorta split down the middle in terms of opinion. I say -"Case Closed!"

secretsquirrely
9:44am, January 20, 2010

Bill, I'd say it is indeed pretty split, however, I've noticed that most of the bitching is coming form people who won't let go of the fact that he even dared to mention Twilight...despite being asked explicitly his opinion. I'm all for folks who have seen the original (I have not) and feel a remake is useless..I have that currently with The Orphanage. People should learn to read and they wouldn't complain about subtitles so much.

Big Bad Wolf

Where did people get the idea that he likes Twilight? It's MTV, and if he badmouthed Twilight publicly, ESPECIALLY with them, then you'd get Twitards attacking the film for being a rip-off of Twilight (which is already going to happen in some capacity anyway). When you're in the kind of position Reeves is in, you can't just walk around being the stereotypical forum jackass badmouthing people. We'll see how this movie plays out. I want to see a trailer.
