This one looks good, really, really good! Having its world premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival on Sunday, January 24 at 12:30pm (encore Tuesday, January 26 at 5:30pm) is Henry Saine's horror comedy The Last Lovecraft: The Relic of Cthulhu, a film that's been flying way under the radar... until now. Bloody Disgusting has got your exclusive first look at the trailer for the film that will have you wishing you were on a plane to Park City, Utah for the premiere this coming weekend. Don't believe me? Go watch it and then say your piece.
"In the film Jeff, a down on his luck office worker, finds out he is the last living relative of horror novelist H.P. Lovecraft. What he doesn't know is that Lovecraft's monsters are real and will soon threaten the very existence of mankind. Jeff and his best friend Charlie are forced to embark on a perilous adventure and they enlist the help of high school acquaintance, Paul, a self proclaimed Lovecraft specialist. Together the three unlikely heroes must protect an alien relic and prevent the release of an acient evil, known as Cthulhu."
Holy shit, it's Lil' Kevin from It's Always Sunny! That's "more mixed up than a milkshake!" Anyway, this movie has suprisingly good production values for a Lovecraft flick. Count me interested.
God damn that looks awful. I was hoping for a real cthulhu based movie, not some cheesey fucking fanboy goof flick. That piece of shit is only going to make it harder for a real one to get made, Ive seen scifi channel original movies that looked more interesting.
Looks like a nice mix of horror and comedy. Probably will be one of the better ones @Slamdance Much better than the crap those talking sh*t pop a pup tent for. I'm talking to you Gargus! Not a good thing to say about anything http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/forums/member.php?&u=1 642
For what it is, a horror comedy, it looks really good. I'd still rather see a serious Lovecraft adaptation though. A more serious film like From Beyond or Dagon would be awesome. Stuart Gordon where are you!!! :)
A truly faithful adaptation of The Call of Cthullu would be a very boring film, and there isn't much that could be done to really create a faithful film adaptation. Lucio Fulci gets close to the mood and tenor in several of his films, and the Dagon film is actually a fairly faithful adaptation of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". This looks interesting, and it's nice to see something other than the usual Helsing descendent get a nod.
This film won Best Film and Best Comedy at the HP Lovecraft Festival in Portland last Oct. I actually will be on a plane next Monday to see this film in Utah.
@redcapjack: Well dude, they already have adapted The Call of the Cthulu. The film was made just a few years ago and it has garnered quite a bit of acclaim. I still haven't seen it yet though. Check it out: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478988/
"Get it off the window!" That was kinda funny. Too bad we're not getting the Del Toro At The Mountains Of Madness. But a comedy inspired by Lovecraft is good, for now. At least there is no Paris Hilton or other shit-asses.
Uhhh, I don't think the average movie-goer will have ANY idea what the "Lovecraft Mythos" is about...nor, even, know who Lovecraft, himself is.
This may fall flat on it's face since most people won't get the jokes.
I like it...but I would also have been much more excited about a well-made version of "The Dunwich Horror", "Innsmouth" or "At the Mountains of Madness"....and THEN release this film a year later, to earn millions more.
I saw this movie last fall at the Lovecraft Festival in Portland, Oregon. While a tiny bit cheesy, it was laugh-out loud funny with a great script and good performances from the leads. The make-up effects were average, but at least they weren't CGI. The movie was a hit at the festival and I think it won a couple of awards. It's worth checking out.
As far as who was Lovecraft? He was a pulp writer in the 1920s and 30s. He's mainly known for writing cosmic horror stories that feature "elder gods"/monsters from outer space or another dimension that want to take over this world. The first Hellboy movie is a good example of this type of Lovecraft story.
