The plot sounds an awful lot like a short story I recently read. Anyone know whether it's an adaptation?

It is in fact a feature film based on a short. There's a mound in the backyard and it's a creature feature.

It's playing near me but I don't want to see it, it looks odd. More of a rental.

Might be worth checking out. I actually liked Costner's serial killer MR.BROOKS. I thought he pulled the part off really good for a usually serious, dramatic actor.
