A Howling Good One Sheet for 'The Wolfman'!

I wasn't all that impressed with the first one sheets for Universal Pictures' The Wolfman remake. I don't think they're bad necessarily, but they didn't get my adrenaline pumping like the one you'll find beyond the break. The new poster features Benicio Del Toro howling at the moon in a stylish, action-packed image. What do you think? Directed by Joe Johnston, like the 1941 original that starred Lon Chaney Jr., new pic arriving in theaters February 12 will be set in Victorian England. Benicio Del Toro will play a man who returns from America to his ancestral homeland, gets bitten by a werewolf and begins a hairy moonlight existence.

"Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar® winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Oscar® winner Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother...and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.

Lawrence Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate.

As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself…one he never imagined existed.

Wait... they're putting out a new one sheet this "close" to release? Aren't we supposed to interpret that sort of "last minute" tinkering to mean the movie is going to be an unmitigated disaster? After all, if editing is still taking place this "late" AND the marketing campaign is being retooled, doesn't that mean the entire production has lost its way? Isn't that the standard operating procedure around here of late (in particular when it comes to THE WOLFMAN) - assume that every new turn in the post-production/pre-release process is a portent of doom? I mean, why start being hopeful now, just when the news of >gasp< re-edits >oh, the horror!< THREE WHOLE MONTHS before release has people contemplating suicide or life in a monastery and a vow of abstinence from horror films for life? Why start being optimistic when the inane, reactionary fear and loathing for this movie is just now kicking into full gear?

I still think that everyone had better prepare for a possible PG-13 rating. It's a "UNIVERSAL MONSTER" remake, and kids have always enjoyed them. There ARE more important things than making every horror film that comes out blood-drenched. PG-13 can still be pretty intense...and with the money they've spent, they're gonna need larger audiences.

Wait a minute...doesn't that date at the bottom of the poster say DECEMBER 2, 2010?

Is it the European dating...they use the day/month/year.
