'Maniac' Remake Deal Closed, Update on 'Maniac Cop'

Some really interesting news came out of the New York City Horror Film Festival where Bloody Disgusting's John Marrone was on on hand to witness William Lustig receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. During his acceptance speech he revealed that a deal is closed on a remake of Maniac and also updated the status on the reboot of Maniac Cop (both films he directed). Read on for the skinny.

Lustig on the 'Maniac' remake last night at NYCHFF when he accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award:

"We already made a deal for the remake of 'Maniac' - there is a remake of 'Maniac' thats on its way, believe it or not. That deal is already closed. Now, Larry and I are in discussions for the remake of 'Maniac Cop'. We're not gonna be involved, but we'll collect a check. Actually, on the remake of 'Maniac', it's gonna say produced by William Lustig, but I'm going to have the least amount of involvement as a producer on the movie."

Lustig has also has no urge to direct again.

"I guess I got spoiled. When I made films, there was a real possibility, whether they were big or small, that they made cinemas. To me making a movie just to go straight-to-video or straight-to-cable is not very interesting to me. I don't understand the whole economics of making movies today. If it's not going to be financially rewarding, or emotionally rewarding, why go out there and break your hump? I'd rather get a good night's sleep."

The crowd booed in general when the remakes were discussed, but happy for Lustig that he'll get paid for his legacy. He does some above and beyond work preserving classic horror film prints circa Blue Underground.

I talked to Robert D'Zar at a Con Not too long ago and he told me he has a cameo as a judge and also told me that John Cena was going to reprise his maniac cop role. At That point, my excitement went right out the window!

this remake can actually be great seeing how murder sprees has become more gruesome in the past 30 years since the original script was written. The movie, if anyone didn't know, is based around real murder cases and at the time the killer was based off some one still at large at the time(they were caught after the movie was released). There are many ways to expand on that with modern themes, from the Xbox killer who went on a spree just to retrieve the system to the Manga Murder where the killer claimed to be Raito Yagami from the famous series death note leaving the note "I am kira". or it could be a loose remake remake with Tom Savini not invovled and pg-13. I can only hope it's the former

Great another crappy remake. Well, I'll skip this one as well. I'll stick the original 3 instead.

So much for "Maniac Cop 4" I guess. I was really looking forward to that. Cohen and Lustig have sold out. They are losers to me now.

Hmm I don't know about a Maniac remake but I want a reboot of Maniac Cop.

All of the Maniac Cop movies were awesome, but I love Maniac. Joe Spinnell was amazing and scary as hale!! RIP Joe!

Maniac shouldn't be touched. Even if it turns out to be good, I would rather not see a remake. Chances are all the blood's going to be CG and look like crap, or it's gonna be another PG-13 horror travesty.

maniac remake is just f***ed up idea, how the hell would they top spinnell's character and savini's fx-work (which is superior in the original)!!!?? why,why fucking why...?? although maniac cop reboot sounds.. well, for fuck's sake. why not??

Maniac was meticulously done with such precision. The special effects look sooo real, the part when Savini's head got blown off gave me the shakes and heart palpitations! Maniac shouldn't be remade. The Maniac Cop movies, I'm okay with it.

Seeing that the deal is "done" and MANIAC is being remade, I'll hope that they do it justice. The original definately had a realness, right out of today's headlines. Just a deranged serial killer stalking and killing. No fantasy Jason/Freddy stuff. So this could be done very intense, scary and dramatic in a "Silence of the Lambs", "Seven" type of movie if they have an excellant writer attached.

Really? Maniac? Once again, if you're going to remake something, here's a solid candidate for one. The original was cheap yet affective for it's time but laughable and pedestrian for today's audience. At least that's my opinion. He had mommy issues? Whatever. Joe Spinell was great in the role but it's not that great of a movie. Sorry. Remake it all you want. The original will always exist. What do you (we) care if they remake it. It's like politics and health care. Not a Goddamn thing we can do about anything.

Horrorchic81, you need to see Maniac. Its one of the few movies that freaked me out as a kid. The ending was awesome just awesome and I'll have to add as well that a remake will just shit all over the original.

I feel that a remake of Maniac might not be so bad, but it's probably due to my dissatisfaction with the original for it's huge plot holes. This film, as upsetting and shocking as some people have made it out to be could have been much worse, in a good way....it could have been troumatizing.
