While we weren't fans here at Bloody Disgusting, there are a ton of positive reviews floating around for George A. Romero's latest zombie incarnation, Survival of the Dead, which involves inhabitants of an isolated island off the North American coast who find their relatives rising from the dead to eat their kin. The leaders of the island feud over whether or not to kill their reanimated relatives or preserve them in hopes of finding a cure. Today BD reader 'Jeremy' sent us in the brand spanking new promo trailer that features a look at a ton of gory kills. Spoiler warning!

I don't like the CGI. It's kind of depressing to see it used so much but I still think it looks great and I love George :)

No way slithis, I like Diary too. This looks really cool . The. Story seems a little hokkie but the kills will be cool. And isn't that why we all go to see these anyway? Dig deep inside in horror loving hearts search for why you go to see theese films.

I loved Diary, like I said my only complaint about Survival is the CGI, it's tacky looking.

Unfortunately Cgi is being used more and more in this genre.Though I do like the head shots. The days of people being ripped in half and having intestines ripped out are no longer latex and animal parts, and the blood still looked better as corn syrup and red dye. It's getting better but still not as cool.Thankfully theres still new Indie Horror that uses old school methods.

Yeah, I know. I wasn't even born when the first three were made and I think they're better than any zombie movies nowadays. I love all of his zombies movies so I can't see why I won't love this!

I'm hoping the leave the head getting blown off and the skull cap dropping down on the neck out. Just did not look good at all! Other than that...this seems to be a fresh take on THE man's world. I'm also tired of the remakes and uninspired films that are coming out. Why can't a film be adventurous and fun...campy if you would? I'm all for this one...can't wait for it to drop!

Why is Romero soo bad now? Why is it when great horror directors grow older they lose their minds? A zombie riding a horse. Terrible CG, dumb characters. A silly plot. My god, his bad zombie movies now cancel out his good zombie movies.

this looks a bit better than i thought at first. but they give away (in the last trailer too) the fact the lead girl becomes a zombie. also, is it just cheaper to use CGI gore/kills? god i miss the good old days when Savini, Baker, etc, etc, used PRACTICAL FX. i understand some kills would be too hard or large scale maybe to use them but come on....ever since LAND Romero's has gone with CGI. so i'm assuming it's just cheaper and they are trying to maximize their efforts with a small budget.

Romero's last few movies have been shit for one big resounding reason... CG kills. Why the hell would he stop doing what made his movies so memorable and go with crap ass CG garbage?? You get rid of Tom Savini and well, you have what can only be described shit.

While I'm not offended, bothered, or even feel the need to respond to any of the knocks at Romero's last one, two or three films, I did want to voice at least one more positive post. I thought Land was worth the wait, felt the Diary was amazing (albeit with much less shrouded commentary than past films), and I'm very much looking forward to his latest zombie opus. I won't comment on a movie that I haven't seen, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.

For all us fans of Romero and the whole zombie genre this looks fuckin sweet. I can't wait!

The thing Romero does well is that he's able to write realistic characters, and then when he films his movies, he casts actors that look like realistic people. I'm glad to see this is no exception. I'm also glad to see his sense of humor hasn't dried up(Diary was almost completely serious), which is good, as well. The only thing that looks tacky is the CGI effects, but if the rest of this movie happens to have "wins" all over the place, bad SFX could be excused. So far, yeah, I'm stoked. It looks fun.

This looks like a great night at the movies! Romero never disappoints me (well, except for Bruiser...)

Go back to practical gore gags, George...PLEASE. PLEASE. Do I have to kidnap Tom Savini and drop him at your doorstep. 'Cause I will.

can't wait too see this film. 69 and still making entertaining movies for us to watch. and his dead films have always been more of social statements with zombies in them.

I personally thought Diary was absolutely horrible. First reason being all of the characters were so unlikable and completely annoying. I didn't care if any of them lived or died. Especially the main character that constantly acted like a douche and got on my nerves. I just wanted the movie to end so I wouldn’t have to listen to them anymore. Unlike his first three Dead films in which I cared about what happened to the main characters. The second issue was the use of CGI. I find it sad that Romero stated in earlier commentaries he is not a big fan of CGI. He said he would only like to use it to enhance the effects and not let it become a crutch. He also said something along the lines of CGI effects have a sense of unrealism that detach you from the movie and take you out of the moment. The effect is not as believable or impactful. That is exactly what happened with Diary. As much as I respect the man for being responsible for some of the best horror films ever made, it is somewhat hypocritical of him to condemn CGI for gore effects(as it should be) and then use it almost exclusively. He uses the argument that it’s necessary to cut down on production costs. I've seen plenty of other recent low budget horror films use nothing but practical effects without apparently having that issue. I'm sure people will jump all over my criticism of the horror legend. After all, I'm just a fan, what right do I have to give an opinion. I'll still see Survival out of loyalty to Romero. However, my expectations will be very low with the CGI effects I've seen in the trailer. Who knows, maybe a good story and some decent characters will make up for it this time around.
