CNN Spotlights Christopher Lee, Who Talks Modern Horror

While CNN is turning into TMZ, they still occasionally have a great feature that's worth noting. Today their online arm posted a special interview with horror legend Christopher Lee, best remembered at Count Dracula in an array of Hammer films. Right off the bat CNN makes Lee look like he's appalled by modern horror. "I find it quite nauseating what they do," Lee told CNN. "The blood is all over the screen like an avalanche -- the mutilation -- dreadful things, and I just don't enjoy that." He continues, "What you don't see is far more frightening than what you do see," said Lee, who considers Roman Polanski's 1968 supernatural thriller "Rosemary's Baby" the scariest film he's ever seen. You can read the entire article by clicking the link above or below. Hammer Films is set to make its return with The Resident, starring Hilary Swank, and Let Me In, the remake of Let the Right One In.

I'm not surprised Lee does not care for todays horror, he is from a different generation. Regardless, he is my favorite Count by far, I loved the Hammer films growing up. He is a true horror legend up there with Karloff, Chaney Jr and Lugosi. Oh shit, gotta have Vincent Price up there to.

Lee is fantastic as the Count but the personal views of actors mean nothing to me.

Can't say I completely disagree with him. I wouldn't go so far as to call them obscene, but most mainstream horror films these days are violence for the sake of it. I like gore like everybody else but there's gotta be some context or atmosphere behind it.

His films, and those classics from years past, were made for a wider audience. Today's horror, like just about any other form of entertainment, has been categorized into who knows how many sub-genres that to have some resemblance to universal appeal will result in huge box office success (Sixth Sense, The Others, etc.). Furthermore, most of the older movies relied on the strength of the story being told, not for it to be some excuse to isolate a bunch of teenagers nobody cares about and watch as special effects take center-stage. And this is indicative of the genre at all (cough, cough, Transformers).

Considering Lee worked with Jess Franco several times makes it the pot calling the kettle black.

Funny that you would accuse CNN of turning into an entertainment show, but then enthusiastically post an article that's...a CNN article about entertainment? Shit or get off the pot, BD. Find an opinion and stick with it.

I kind of agree with Lee. Modern day horror really blows. All shock value with little to no substance.

He's a legend and I respect him but considering his age I'm sure that when he was young pup legends from before him felt that way about the horror films that he was in.

Christopher Lee is the king! He's fucking 85yo and still going strong (thanks to Peter Jackson, George Lucas, and Tim Burton)! He's the Hughe Hefner of horror! Long may he reign...

I guess it takes a horror legend to remind us what makes horror great. Less is more is so true. Need proof, forgetting gore, what's actually SCARIER , the Shining or Saw VI, Blair Witch or Friday the 13th, Paranormal Activity or Hostel?
