UPDATE: Box Office: Jigsaw is no Match for the Supernatural
Saturday, October 24, 2009

Here are the full weekend estimates: 'Paranormal Activity' with $22m and 'Saw VI' with $14.8m. Bloody Disgusting got their hands on the early box office projects and they're staggering. While the two big horror films were tracking neck and neck, early reports show that Paranormal Activity beat the living crap out of Lionsgate's Saw VI. Is Paranormal that powerful or are Saw fans still trying to get the bad taste of Saw V out of their mouth? So here's the deal: Paranormal Activity pulled in an estimated $7.4m on Friday for a potential $21.5m overall weekend. Saw VI on the other hand, took in $6.9m Friday with a weekend projection of $15.7m. The real shocker is that while Paramount's supernatural horror flick only played in 1,945 locations, Jigsaw's games took over 3,036. What's going to happen with a full marketing push and a full release? I guess now they can set their sights on Blair Witch? And what does this mean for the Saw franchise being that Saw V open to nearly DOUBLE VI?

That's sad b/c SAW VI is surprisingly better than that over hyped shit.

I loved Saw VI, it was really fun. Still, it shocks me how many people aren't showing any support for the little indie film that could. Everyone claims to hate remakes, yet it appears that's actually what they want. Hmmmmmmm

I saw both :) Paranormal activity was an amazing film. I really got into it. I just wish it were longer. And I still believe in Saw 5! I'm one of the few who loved that one. I'm glad that the series pretty much wrapped up with 6, but I still look forward to Saw 7.

I have no desire to see Saw VII after the raping my eyes took with V.

I'm happy with this. SAW finally had some competition. The reason the SAW movies continued to do as well as they did for so long is because they had no direct competition. This year it was up against a horror movie with much more buzz and people decided to go with something fresh and new instead of the same old thing, which has grown tired. I knew PA would hurt SAW, and was hoping PA could be #1, but I didn't expect THIS huge a drop for SAW. I was predicting 25 Million. This looks like it will have the lowest gross of the entire series. It's not like the 7th won't be one of the biggest grossing in the series though thanks to the 3D, especially if it has no competition next year.

Is anyone surprised that a part 6 in a horror franchise starts to make less money? It happened with Friday the 13th (Part 5 and 6 were significantly lower than the ones before it), Nightmare on Elm Street (Part 5 was a big drop from Part 4).

fmyers1. There's no argument. If you hate a movie, you hate a movie. It's fine. I just hate how no matter what we cover, or what we do, everyone complains and bitches. No one is every "happy", everyone is just filled with hate and it's tiring. All I'm saying is that there should be some support and happiness that a $10k movie is doing so well, as opposed to a remake of ELM STREET. It gives people hope and inspiration, yet all I feel is anger and resentment. I think it's time for a horror intervention.

Saturdaythe13th: I'm only shocked because they've all made a consistent amount of money. Based on our friends and their excitement for VI, it appears that V actually did have a toll on people. "Should I really see it?" That's the average text or email I received.

What is with this? Halloween 2 gets upset by FD4 at the box office now Saw 6 gets upset by Paranormal Activity. WOW! Didn't see this coming.

Yeah, it is kinda a shocker. With Final Destination it was marketing dollars, with this, hype I guess won.

I wouldn't have voted for Paranormal Activity to get a wide release if I knew it would hurt my beloved Saw.

Saws played out...im tired of all of them

MrDigusting: Please note that SAW V did not open at No. 1. High School Musical 3 opened in that spot last year and SAW V was No. 2. However, this further proves that two horror movies should not go head to head. Hallowen 2 hurt and now SAW VI. SAW 6 was incredible. People need to go see it. I feel bad that SAW V left such a bad taste in people's mouths and the fact that he's directing SAW 7 will probably kill the franchise. It would make me literally cry if SAW became a direct-to-video series. How many horror films can go six movies and have only one mediocre film.

Both movies sucked.

Limelight Magazine: Thanks for that, will make an amendment.

I havent seen either film, but I do agree that it basically just boils down to people already know what to expect with the saw films and are probably just tired of them. So Paranormal comes along and its something new to as opposed to Saw which good or not people will make the assumption and go see something new and different.

Ugh, people disgust me. They'd actually rather watch amounts to little more than someone's home videos released by a huge media conglomerate that you know is just laughing at all the gullible suckers they got to see aforementioned home videos. Lionsgate on the other hand, is a relatively small company (it's no Paramount, which is owned by Viacom which owns CBS, MTV, VH1, plus a bunch of other TV networks and publishing houses) and has been the most consistent purveyor of horror films since it began in the late 80's.

"I just hate how no matter what we cover, or what we do, everyone complains and bitches. No one is every "happy", everyone is just filled with hate and it's tiring." welcome to the internet Mr. Disgusting. i know what you mean though. it's a shame.

"Everyone claims to hate remakes, yet it appears that's actually what they want." While I agree with the sentiment, it IS actually possible to hate remakes but also hate "found footage" movies equally as badly. A lot of people simply don't like that kind of movie, regardless of who made it. It's also possible to want to support indie movies but have no desire to support a movie simply because the mainstream press got hold of it and hyped the living crap out of it. PA's been hyped so much, it's probably impossible to go in and like it anywhere near as much as the guys who saw it first. Overly high expectations have a way of killing your enjoyment of movies like this.

aphexbr: "While I agree with the sentiment, it IS actually possible to hate remakes but also hate "found footage" movies equally as badly. " Very good point, VERY good point. I appreciate your ability to debate instead of just throwing out insults.

saw 6 was awesome! great ending, but will hoffman escape and go after jill? and what was in the package from the box she opened? it was posted through a door at the hostpital? this has to be a plant for part 7.

saw 6 should have beated that movie

Did someone say insults? I came just in time. SAW needs to fucking go away forever and people who like it are retarded. And as for people hating the "found footage" movies, I'm sure more people hate remakes, so get over it. Honestly, how many of found footage movies really come out in a given year? And I hope PA causes a slew of movies like them. I'd rather see those then Saw 10 or a remake of the remake of Texas Chainsaw. The majority of found footage movies have taken the horror community by storm and its for a reason: they're good.

i dont know why you people campare saw to the nightmare on elm street and friday the 13 movies just because they came out every year doesnt mean there same saw is a fucking incredible story and its never ending dont get me wrong i love f13 and nightmare but to campare to saw your just nuts no comparison
