Gary Ross to Write and Potentially Direct 'Spider-Man' Spinoff 'Venom'

Hopefully with the intent on erasing the events in Spider-Man 3, Gary Ross is writing Venom, Columbia Picture’s spinoff based on one of the villains from Spider-Man 3, as a potential directing vehicle. Ross is already writing Spider-Man 4 for the studio. In the comics, Venom is a gooey alien parasite that bonds with Peter Parker and later his newsroom rival, among other people, becoming one of more popular villains in "Spider-Man’s" rogue gallery. Topher Grace portrayed the character (terribly) in the 2007 movie, which ended with both the human and the alien symbiote apparently destroyed in an explosion (Sam Raimi's way of saying f*ck you to the character). The studio had no comment on Grace’s involvement (just go away, go away) nor on Ross writing the project.

More interested in Spidey #4. Why wouldn't they just make Venom the main foe for #4 ? Makes sense. Why split it up ?

I agree with Jonny Horror, I love Venom (comic/cartoon version) but why couldn't they have Venom come back in Spiderman 4 instead of having his own movie. They should learn from Rob Zombie's Halloween and realize thats too much of the evil character on screen takes out all the evilness of the character and ruins the strength of the character as well. I hated Sandman even more than Venom in Spiderman 3, it was just stupid looking towards the end.

Agree with Jonny.

Topher Grace was the worst thing about venom...It should of been a different actor that was physically built and taller than Peter. When it came to Venoms form, he was the same build as spider man, and blah...he never said "we are venom!" i also hated sandman....He was just a boring character. Harry was the best thing about spidy 3. Anyways for 4...Carnage would be awesome, or the Lizard, scorpion ect

Id rather see lizard in sspidey 4 then carnage, seeing on how they treated venom in 3 i dont want them touching carnage, lizard tho would be pretty hard to fuck up.

FUCK YEAH. Bring this shit on, i cant wait. SM 3 really fucked Venom over. I want to see him big, bad, and that tounge doing crazy shit. Hopefully they have him evil though, will be a ball breaker if his a good guy.

The 90's Spiderman cartoon had an excellent 4 part series called the Venom Saga. When I first heard he was to be the villain in S3 I was hoping it would follow that story.Totally disappointed. This could be interesting though. Does anyone know if that cartoon story was close to the comics?

What a work of art right above. A spin off huh!?? I actually liked that 3rd installment, but agree that Topher did not do Venom's part justice. Needs to go back to the...70's.

I think Brock Lesnar (UFC heavyweight champ, former wwe pro wrestler) would make a great eddie brock. He's physically huge, menacing, a legit tough guy and his wrestling heel act was a bully boy with a chip on his shoulder.

i hear ya horrorchick81 and cheluvshorror, Spidey 3 was great fun. more venom, excellent news

i was fine with topher grace being brock but venom souldve of been alot bigger and nastier than he was in the movie, and to all the people wanting big people to play brock, i may be wrong but i believe in all the comics/cartoons brock was about the same size as peter but venom was huge

Vemon was weak in SM3. Topher is suppose to be Predators alongside Brody. I HOPE with everything in me they both drop out.

I agree that Spider-Man 3 was a disaster and Topher Grace better not be playing Venom for this. If this movie is done right this will be the best comic book movie of all time except for the Avengers and Deadpool.

I agree that Topher Grace was not a good Venom, but I thought he was a decent Eddie Brock, just like Tobey Macguire (in my opinion) was a crappy Spiderman, but a great Peter Parker. Dont know how I feel about this yet though

There is several things they could do to make spidey-4 the best marvel movie ever, they won't do any of it. 1st. MAKE IT RATED R!!! stop holding back, 2nd. If it's rater R the best villan is carnage, but you could'nt use him unless it's R rated. 3rd. Include venom in the 4th movie, his character and carnage's go hand and hand. but since disney will be making all the marvel movies i doubt it will be any good. we have seen the best marvel movies we will see hardcore fans would love a venom movie, but it will not make much money, all the 8yr old that go to the movies just wanna see spiderman hit me back with thoughts

Helllllooooooo....They split it up because it makes more money. Why make 1 movie with Spidey and Venom when you can make multiple movies with Spidey and multiple movies with Venom. Milking money.

they should've had more venom moments in SP3 so this sounds quite interesting

The only good casting choice in any of the Spiderman movies, in my opinion, was Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin. But then they put a fucking mask on him! Just paint the man green, and you have a true to life Green Goblin straight from the pages. Guh. I hope for a good Venom movie, but I also hope for a good Spiderman, Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, Lobo, Evil Ernie, etc, etc.

I thought Topher did an awesome job as Venom. The character was just written ALLLLLL wrong. Venom would be way more interesting than a new spiderman flick.

Comma splicing like a son-of-a-bitch. While SM3 was terrible, it wasn't completely Raimi's fault.

I love Venom, but Topher Grace was not right for the part. They need some big motherfucker to play Venom - in the Venom movie i would love to see Venom take on Carnage.

The worst thing about Spider-Man 3 was THEY DIDNT FUCKING EXPLAIN WHERE VENOM CAME FROM. IT JUST FELL FROM THE GOD DAMN SKY. THEY EVEN SET IT UP IN PART 2 WITH THE MARY JANES FIANCE. HE WAS AN ASTRONAUT & HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BRING IT BACK FROM SPACE, BUT FOR SOME REASON RAIMI JUST SAID "FUCK IT, MAYBE PEOPLE WON'T NOTICE". sorry i blew up
