'Silent Hill' and 'Pulp Fiction' Writer Sentenced in Fatal DUI Crash

The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Pulp Fiction has been sentenced to a year in jail for causing a fatal traffic crash in Southern California. Roger Avary, who was currently penning Silent Hill 2 for Columbia Pictures, was sentenced Tuesday in a Ventura court. He also received five years of probation. Avary pleaded guilty in August to gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving for the 2008 crash that killed a passenger in Avary's Mercedes in Ventura County. Authorities say Avary's car was traveling at more than 100 mph when it crashed into a telephone pole. Avary's wife was ejected from the vehicle and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Avary and Quentin Tarantino share the 1995 Academy Award for writing Pulp Fiction. Drinking and driving, one thing that makes me sick to my stomach more than nearly anything else. Avary, you're a piece of sh*t.

Got to do what they all do and show the worst possible pic. LOL

Roger Avary

Worthless creep! It's a shame what this country has come to. Kill a person get a slap on the wrist (1 year???) rob a bank and it's 40 sir! The judicial system is a laugh.

Prick deserves EVERYTHING that's coming to him! Lost my pops to some drunk douche bag 20 years ago although the bastard was killed in the crash along with his pregnant girlfriend. and that suits me just fine. :o) good thing he died because not so sure I woulnd't have killed him myself for screwing up my life along with my sibblings.

Maybe if he writes a horror movie about his experience, you can go back on your judgmental attitude and plaster your site with the film's banner ads. Fucking phony.

What a fool and a jerk. He'd gotten to a point most of us writers only dream of, and he's out fucking around with his and his wife's life, and gets someone killed. Ill never get it. FAIL. They should reduce him to pencil and paper in jail and prohibit use of computers...

I know how you feel, Mr. D. My uncle was killed by a drunk driver. It's a whole lot of bullshit these Hollywood fucks get such light sentences for killing people.

i LOVE "SILENT HILL" but i don't necessarily love it because of the writing. i loved it because of the actors and the AMAZING creatures/images. so can't someone else write it?! i don't see Roger's writing being what would make or break SILENT HILL 2. i am praying that SH2 is still a go.

You know I'm sure he already feel awful for what happened. If you were in his shoes you would only want a year in jail too. So befor you get too self righteous maybe you should remember he has the rest of his life to realize what he has done. Befor anyone thinks I have no idea what that is like, google Macy Moyers/four teens killed in carcrash in Baytown Texas. You can read all about the death of my cousins. Do I hate the kid responsible, no, because those girls made the choice to get into the car. Hopefully everyone gets my point.

Well, there goes a chance at a good sequel to Silent Hill.

Oh my God the first movie was mostly based on the VIDEO GAME!!!! Scariest game I ever played. Except they made it a mother rescueing her daughter instead of the father. How hard is it to find a good writer?

I agree that drunken/impaired driving is inexcusable. I agree that maybe his sentence may have been a bit light, a punishment should fit the crime (BillLoomis: my brother-in-law did 1 1/2 years for armed bank robbery and he's a nobody idiot). I will always feel sorry for victims of this crime and their family. But I won't agree with people pointing their fingers and being so damn judgmental. We have all done stupid shit that should have got us in a hell of a lot of trouble and if you say: "I never..." Bullshit! There was a report on CNN today about texting while driving is 4 times more likely to cause an accident than someone who has a .08 BAC and that's not even a crime in most states.

At least he'll know about the character having guilt, he can write the script of Silent Hill 2 from his own experience. It could make the movie even better.

everyone is complaining about silent hill 2? are you serious? the guy is a sack of shit who deserves to burn

Amen, coffinjoe. This site gets more foolish everyday, no one here has any right to judge this guy. We all fuck up. Now, if he does it again then throw him to the fire, but until then bite your tongue or.. clench your fists or whatever.

Because none of you have been drinking and driving before? His friend got in the car with him. That decision was just as bad. So is it only bad if something bad happens? If you get in a car with a drunk driver, you are at equal fault. Avary didn't kill some sober person driving on the same road. It was a single car accident.

100 mph!? What an A**hole.

DFTaker
10:10pm, September 30, 2009

You can not place all the blame on him. The passenger decided to get into the vehicle with a drunk driver, they are as much fault as he is. The passenger and others around should have been responsible but he is not just to blame. I love how everyone is quick to judge so much for a horror genre cast of fans, you guys would be just like the brain dead from The Mist who get lead around by tales of the end of times. Have a conscious for yourselves!

Bukowski Thompson
10:34pm, September 30, 2009

the passenger didn't have to ride with him. They were all to blame. I don't agree with drinking and driving and i avoid it; however, i have drank and then drove before in my past, luckily i did not get into a accident. Everybody has done it at least once, and if you have.. then you shouldn't judge people so harsh, assholes.
