A Look Back: 'The Blair Witch Project's' Tenth Anniversary

In lieu of Paranormal Activity beginning its theatrical run, we've decided to look back at the 10th anniversary of Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez's groundbreaking horror film The Blair Witch Project. If you click here you can read Jeff Otto's retrospect piece, that talks a bit about its lore and influence on horror filmmaking over the past decade. In the micro-budget film that grossed over $200m at the box office, three film students travel to Maryland to make a student film about a local urban legend... The Blair Witch. The three went into the woods on a two day hike to find the Blair Witch, and never came back. One year later, the students film and video was found in the woods. The footage was compiled and made into a movie. The Blair Witch Project.

I love this film. I thought it was real when I first went to see it, and it scared the crap out of me! It's still fun to watch today. So many people rag on it now, but I bet it scared them the first time as well.

Horrible film with a horrible last minute. Hopefully the only thing Paranormal Activity has in common with The Fail With Project is the camera style.

daysfan79, I was hoping this film would scare me the first time I watched it. I rented the movie expecting to be completely terrified out of my mind. I was home alone, it was night, turned all the lights out, watched the film from beginning to end.... and nothing. Just a boring waste of time. I couldn't believe this piece of shit actually scared people.

A big part of this film's success was the online website experience. They had loads of videos giving back story and "witness accounts" that the movie didn't have. It was brilliant marketing!

Ten Years? Unbelievable. I was 17. Angered after seeing the credits upon first viewing (which revealed that nothing was real and ended up being my first wake up call to the fact that what Hollywood told you was fact should be taken with a grain of salt) I have grown to actually love this film. It's very creepy and atmospheric in a way few are.

I remember I was very excited to see this film but then that year I saw the cast at the MTV music awards I think and I knew it was fake. Yet my father took me to see it but I was bored b/c I really wanted to see STIGMATA instead. Anyways, now days it's a movie I like. Havent seen it in years though.

People that want something more fast paced and bloody probably wouldn't like this. It's a slow film and most of the film centers not so much around the Blair Witch but the three characters, and how they react to their glum situation and to each other. It's like the movie Cube in that it's very character-driven. Fear, Paranoia, Suspicion, Desperation, etc. I loved Heather Donahue's performance the most. I used to live in the woods growing up and being out in the middle of nowhere, lost and hearing things in the middle of the night and wierd things happening is freaking scary. At least to me. Happy Birthday Blair Witch!

i love how people say they hate bwp but in all actuality you all know you loved it until you realised it wasnt real then your poor lil hearts were broken you got bitter and decided to hate.... grow the fuck up this isnt high school... bwp was and always will be an innovative and amazing movie

Kane....If you like it good for you.Be amazed all day long. But alot of of us don't like it and found it boring and pointless. And it was hardly innovative?? The main premise was totally stolen from the vastly superior Cannibal Holocaust.

Hated it! nuff said. I knew it was fake way before I saw it. That girl was so damn annoying. And @ Catherdral opf Demoni, so damn true. It was the same premise.

i begged my parents to let me see this in theatres when i was 14.. they eventually let me go after bugging the hell out of them. i went with a friend expecting to be scared but instead it was incredibly boring and didn't have one single scare.. my friend and I both hated this film..

Ten years, eh? And we're still celebrating this piece of crap? Horrible.

HeroesFan2013

This was not true. They said the footage was discovered in the woods and they were never heard from again...well then why are the actors in movies that came out years after this one? All the Blair Witch Project is is BULLSHIT
