David Cronenberg to Remake His Own 'The Fly' Remake?

Stop the presses, hold everything, wait, wait wait.... excuse me? David Cronenberg is returning to The Fly as the auteur will develop a reboot of his own 1986 classic with Fox, the studio that released that film, directing and potentially writing the new pic. You can read all of the details below, but what I realllllllly want to know is, what do YOU guys think? This one's definitely got me scratching my head. How could it possibly be better?

The move marks an about-face for the Canadian director, who in the past has said he did not want to be involved on a remake of the film. Cronenberg did work on an opera version of "The Fly" that was staged first in Paris and then in Los Angeles.

The 1986 title, itself a remake of Kurt Neumann's 1958 sci-fi classic, starred Jeff Goldblum and became a huge hit for Fox, earning $40 million and turning into a phenomenon. It centered on Seth Brundle (Goldblum), an eccentric scientist who, after an experiment with teleportation goes awry, is transformed into a fly. Geena Davis starred as Goldblum's love interest and partner, Veronica.

A sequel three years later with which Cronenberg was not involved -- it was directed by Chris Walas, who did effects work on the 1986 version -- did not fare as well, and was panned by critics and largely ignored by filmgoers.

The project would represent a chance for Cronenberg to return to a film that helped establish his career, but to do so in the effects age, using techniques that weren't possible nearly a quarter-century ago.

A return to "The Fly" would also mark the latest in a mini-trend of directors remaking their own work. Michael Haneke last year remade his thriller "Funny Games" while Werner Herzog reimagined his doc "Little Dieter Learns to Fly" with the 2006 feature "Breaking Dawn."

Cronenberg recently moved agencies, going from ICM to WME. He's attached to direct "The Matarese Circle," an adaptation of the Robert Ludlum best-seller, at Universal.

Why not? at least it's not some talentless jackass who<s going to remake it.

Well, if anyone could do the remake justice, it could only be Cronenberg himself.

It's already a classic, and it holds up today. It shouldn't be remade, even if it's by the man who made it great to begin with.

This is the best news I've heard all day.

This movie seriously disturbed me as a child...I'm not sure if updating it could really make it much more creepy. I guess we'll see...you never know!

I'm in favor of anything that brings him back to horror...

Some of the few directors to remake their own films would include Hitchcock (The Man Who Knew Too Much), Nightwatch (Ole Bornedal), and The Vanishing (George Sluizer). Unfortunately, in each case, the remake wasn't anywhere near as good as the original.

Although Im thrilled that a remake is actually gonna be done by its original director and not someone who who butcher the concept. And I know from 1986 special effects are amazing and unbelievable. No one and I mean no one could bring the character of the Scientist to life like Jeff Goldblum did, he truly does make you feel and sympathize. Gina Davis and Jeff Goldblum had a connection which made this movie. If you really disagree watch the end of the fly right now and tell me that can be remade. Some movies are just classics and should be left that way.

I don't understand why he wants to do it but his remake is perfection so if it's going to be done it may as well be Cronenberg.

It's all part of the plan!

Awesome!! But it won't be as awesome without Goldblum! I think Cronenberg should remake Shivers.

I guess if it has to be done... which in this day and age it does... then Cronenberg is the ONLY choice

I'm sure it will be in 3D...

It all makes perfect financial $ense why they do this. There is an entire younger generation that missed out on this the first time. You re-introduce this as something new. Easy. The director will most certainly get a big fat check, bigger than the one he got 20+ years ago, and there you have it. This is the same formula that is responsible for HALLOWEEN, F13, TEXAS CM, NMOES, HILLS, DAWN OF THE DEAD, ETC, ETC, and it will keep on happening. WHY YOU ASK ? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. AND HERE'S THE KICKER, IT WORKS !!!!!!!!!

Well at least he's returning, but the other one was a classic. It's so disturbing, it's so gory, sad. Everything. How can he top it. I don't think he can, but DC can pull anything off... He's the man.

I would much rather see Cronenberg direct his sequel to Eastern Promises or The Matarese Circle. His version of The Fly is so awesome. If this HAS to get remade, I feel that Jeff Goldblum could still play this role today.

I love the original. I love the remake. So who am I to say no to another remake? Not sure how it could be better than his first version, but hey, I'm glad he's doing it. I just really hope he doesn't use CG.

I saw this movie when i was 5 and it creeped me out..i own this movie on blu ray and it STILL creeps me out...the acid he shoots out of his mouth and melts the guy..awesome..i dunno...Maybe he has new ideas? either way we'll have the 2nd original haha...but i love the 80's version cuz its all makeup effects no CG..and i think a remake will be to much CGI and ruin it.

I know I've always been in the minority here. I never liked the remake...but I love the '58 version. I've read the original short story...it was much more like the original. Jeff Goldblum is not one of my favorite actors...I think he's rather "full of himself"...Geena Davis did a great job, but I didn't like the fly make-up AT ALL...it was so fake it was comical and it sure didn't look like a fly, in any way,at all! A good choice for a remake-for a change!

Interesting, as well as inexplicable/unnecessary, but good to have Cronenberg doing something, anything horror-based again....still, I wish the news was that he's working on a Videodrome remake/update (which could be interesting, especially from an effects standpoint) instead.

Goddammit I want John Carpenter to re-remake some Halloween movies!
