TIFF '09 Review: Romero's 'Survival of the Dead'

One of the most anticipated world premieres at this year's Toronto International Film Festival was George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead, his latest zombie opus that this time heads to an island. "There’s nothing here in his latest film as the message is forced and empty. It’s a movie that was made “just because.” Although horrible on nearly every aspect, the movie is quite entertaining to watch, which is more than I can say for most films. But that doesn’t mean I recommend watching it." Click the title above for the full review or here for all of our TIFF coverage.

Yikes! And I thought that Diary was bad. Anyhow, I enjoyed Land so I still have hopes for this one.

I'm still going to see this. I loved Diary and other sites have given this rave reviews.

Maybe it is time for King George to step down, who will pick it up he has given us so much.

Romero hasn't made anything worth seeing since Day of the Dead. Fanboys need to accept the fact that he's a hack with no new ideas, and coasting on past success.

i´m not a fan boy.i love romero and carpenter movies because there´s always 20 times more fresh ideas than any of the a ajas,r zombies etc.. i still prefer one zombie movie from romero than one of those stupid remakes or "torture" films. that´s the shit.Diary of the dead is more inuque ,inteligent and fresh than shits like saw,hostels...

Well maybe this will be the same thing that happened to me with Diary: a vast amount of negative reviews, thus forcing me to lower my standards and ultimately causing me to enjoy the movie and think to myself "It's not THAT bad." Maybe Diary is a guilty pleasure, but I really loved Land of the Dead.

i was at the premiere as well and i really enjoyed the movie. i myself certainly don't see anything wrong with making a movie (especially a horror movie) "just because". there were people in the audience (including the MC of the night) claiming allusions and relevance to 911, iraq, afghanistan, etc. and ol George (also in attendance) was just like "ummm..yeah, i just made a movie with my friends is all". if you want meaning or commentary on modern events or human nature, read a newspaper or, if you're a real academic, a fucking periodical. this movie has army guys, bad irish accents, lots of guns, and a zombie riding a horse. enjoy it and long live Romero, king of the Zombies!

George is 117 years old! Lets cut him some slack, i hope i'm half as with it as he is when i'm his age...

i had a feeling this was going to be the case with this movie, but maybe i will still like it. NAVYBLUES says he/she liked it. so it COULD end up being alright. i liked that in the review it said the kills were over the top. sometimes over the top kills can make a movie even just a little bit better. i'm STILL looking forward to seeing this.

If this film was made by another director, I highly doubt as many people would be saying they enjoyed it. Some people will claim to love every movie from a venerated director, like Romero.

Yeah im not expecting something thats going to blow me away. I just want to see a zombie flick. I mean in the hierarchy of zombie films, it cant be that low on the pole.

A bunch of other sites are giving it good reviews. Regardless, I will definitely be seeing this because I love George. I loved Diary and I have a good feeling I will love this too.

I'll still see this, because I like Romero's original zombie flicks!

I have read countless other great reviews of the film, including one on FANGORIA. Obviously you cannot base your opinion on a film on one critics review, but i think the film sounds like a great time that you aren't supposed to take too seriously... For example, i remember sitting in the theater watching Sam Raimi's "Drag Me To Hell" not too long ago and during many of the gags a guy in back of me just kept saying "what is this movie, really, what is this movie" sadly, he just did not get what type of film it was.

Crazies, i respect your opinion but DRAG ME was EXTREMELY overrated. it wasn't scary or funny. and yes i "got" it.

Fangoria and Dreadcentral loved Survival! This seems to really be splitting people. I'll just have to see it myself. Also... Drag Me To Hell was awesome and not overrated at all.

Expected... I dragged my friends to see Diary of the Dead and now they refuse to ever let me suggest a horror film... Diary of the Dead was a crock of shit and I only expect this to be worse.

my only real pet peeve about the 2 newest dead movies...really, what are the chances of the internet staying on throughout a zombie invasion?! mine shits the bed on a good day.

Kaname Tousen

100% chance because zombie's don't attack internet servers. The point of romeo's " of the dead" movies are the message if it's great mix of elements that's great if it's okay it's okay. but the point is not trying to bring something to the zombie movies it never was it was ALWAYS ABOUT THE MESSAGE

navyblues

haha, well lets not forget i full heatedly endorsed and defended Survival earlier in the thread...and i love all of the ...of the dead movies. i'm just sayin i think the internet would go down ;)
