TIFF '09 Review: 'Solomon Kane' Taps into Uwe Boll Territory

One of the biggest disappointments at this year's "Midnight Madness" portion of the Toronto International Film Festival was Michael J. Bassett's Solomon Kane, which in my eyes entered Uwe Boll territory. "While the set designs and wardrobe were beautifully done, there’s really nothing else good about the film. In fact, I would say that Solomon Kane is one of the worst movies of the year. An unfocused mythology, with underdeveloped characters and bad acting make this an unbearable theater experience." Click the title for the full review or here for all of our ongoing TIFF coverage.

I've said before to never trust your reviews and I'm definitely saying that here again. Now I know I should watch a movie before properly judging it, but I severely doubt it's as bad as you claim. And if it is after I watch it, then feel free to have anal sex with my mom.

Now that's major disappointing news, cause the trailer gave me such big hopes.

I think everyone should check out any movie before listing to any reviews, I have seen plenty of reviews that said this film is the worst thing ever and I checked it out and really liked it.

I was really hoping this would be good. . . I'm still going to check it out, but with a guarded outlook.

Obviously I'll check it out anyway, but I can't say I didn't get that "Dr. Boll/Sci-Fi Channel" vibe when I saw the trailer.

Drunken rental it is!

I can't say I'm overly surprised by this review. When I watched the trailer for the film, something just seemed really 'off' about it. I think it was largely the dialogue and the way it was being delivered. The effects seemed decent enough. However, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to handle a movie turning out to be overly dramatic with lines that are being horribly delivered. Definitely going to wait to rent this one...if anything.

I'm really shocked that this site posted an extremely negative review. I've been going through the majority of the reviews and it turns out that the majority of them were positive. Over on IMDB, the User Rating stands at 9.4 out of 10.

I'll take this with a grain of salt because this seems like nothing more than a cry for attention.

You always only seem to rip on movies that arent mainstream, or have already come and gone with the general horror movie goers already hating it before you do so publicly. Guy who runs cinema-suicide seemed to like it and from looking at his site he is far more credible. Still funny though you say uwe boll like its a negative, you used to that till you got to interview him and Im surprised you could have asked any questions in that interview what with his balls gently bumping your chin. So make up your mind, you either like him or hate him but stop jumping around.

How exactly is a review for a movie, positive or negative, a "cry for attention"? This is a website that covers horror and similar-themed media, and the staff writers here review dozens of films each month. Why would any of them feel the need to deliberately give a false opinion of a film just to get attention... especially when there are a handful of folks who apparently sit by their computers waiting for each new B-D review just so they can trash the reviewer and claim that this site and its coverage are "less credible" than others? I can't honestly imagine a sadder existence than continuing to visit an entertainment site for the express purpose of complaining about the purely subjective opinions of the people who run that site. If you prefer the coverage provided by other sites, go there and stop visiting B-D, for the sake of your own happiness. After all, watching horror films is a hobby that, like all hobbies, is supposed to bring its practitioners enjoyment. If you choose to stay here despite not liking or agreeing with anything that's posted, you at best have too much time on your hands, and at worst suffer from some sort of psychological problem bordering on obsession.

Solomon Kane has gotten some positive buzz just about everywhere else I've looked. The negative review on this site caught me by surprise, that's all. When I said "cry for attention," what I meant to say was that there are these films that get hyped up so much that it would take one extremely negative review to draw in a lot of curious viewers and probably cause some of them to have second thoughts about seeing a film. If you think I'm putting down the staff on this site, you're wrong. I understand that no review is saying you have to like or hate this film. If the folks on this site didn't like Solomon Kane, that's fine. It's just that the Uwe Boll comparison they made was, IMO, ridiculous.

And another thing, negative reviews will never stop me from visiting this site. I love it. I'll still check out Solomon Kane when it gets released.
