Some huge movies before I shut down for the evening, Columbia Pictures has finally officially announced a sequel to Silent Hill, which will begin production after the completion of Sony Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Afterlife. Screenwriter Roger Avary and Samuel Hadida of Davis Films are returning. Read on for the skinny. No director has been named yet.
Roger Avary and Samuel Hadida of Davis Films are climbing back up "Silent Hill."
The screenwriter and producer have signed on for a sequel to their 2006 video game adaptation.
The original, based on the Konami game, centered on a woman who travels to a desolate town to seek help for her ailing daughter only to find supernatural occurrences taking place there.
Davis Films aims to shoot the movie next year after "Resident Evil 4," which it's now prepping.
TriStar released the original "Silent Hill," which earned $47 million domestically; the label has not confirmed involvement on the follow-up.
Avary, best known for his work on Quentin Tarantino scripts such as "Pulp Fiction," also is penning video game adaptation "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" for Davis Films.
The deal is one of several projects for Hadida's company. The French-based banner has come to Toronto with two projects -- Michael Bassett's "Solomon Kane" and the Terry Gilliam-helmed "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus."
"Kane," based on Robert Howard's early 20th-century pulp novels that blend fantasy and history, screened in the Cannes market in the spring, and Davis Films is hoping for new attention and offers at TIFF. The pic is set to play Wednesday in the Midnight Madness section.
"The cut is basically the same, but a lot of distributors wanted to see it with an audience, which could really affect how a film plays," Hadida said.
Despite the lesser-known cast -- James Purefoy, starring in the title role, is perhaps the best-known name -- the filmmakers believe "Kane" could sell on the brand value of the Howard creation.
"The property is the star," said Paul Berrow, who is producing with Hadida.
"Parnassus" will be released by Sony Pictures Classics following an involved postproduction process that included a stop at Cannes in May.
In addition to the "Resident Evil" franchise, Hadida counts movies such as "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "The Rules of Attraction" among his credits.
Finally! I'm a huge fan of the game series. I did enjoy the first film but I know there was room for improvement. Hopefully they make the new one more creepy and scary. Can't wait!!
They say Roger Avary is coming back to script it. He was just found guilty of manslaughter and is going to jail, so he'll have nothing but time on his hands, so hopefully he'll crank out a good script.
This is bloody fantastic news. I'll be curious to see which direction they take this. Whether they stick close to the 2nd game or perhaps even the 3rd. I do hope they bring back Christophe Gans to direct again though. He got the first movie spot on.
The first film was pretty good, the nailed the look and atmosphere of Silent Hill and especially those monsters with no arms, Pyramid head, and that janitor was creepy as hell...BUT i hated when they 'took' you out of Silent hill when they showed scenes of the husband. The demon children which looked freaky behind the scenes, were ruined on film with shitty cgi and flames...the nurses looked good, but didn't move right at all. I'll never forget it when i watched this in the theatre with my friends...they were on shrooms, and started to freak out and walked out of the theatre lol
Nice - I did so love the first movie, seeing this in the theater and when the siren went off the first time knowing that it's all going to hell in a hand basket. I don't think Gans is doing anything right now so it shouldn't be hard to get him back, which would be excellent news!
The first one had a good atmosphere, and the story had potential but was kind of a let down. I don't know where they're going to go since the "darkness" was resolved in the first one.
its about fucking time i love silent hill i just hope the sequel will be better then the first.... dont get me wrong i loved the first but it was tame compared to the game series
I'm really really excited about this film, though a bit disappointed that Roger Avary is returning. Too much was needlessly changed in the first film, and the look of the film wasn't quite right... And I think the games are dramatically more interesting by having the town as a popular lakeside resort which some people find abandoned and full of monsters, rather than a burnt up and destroyed town full of hundreds of cult members and monsters which were designed for specific symbolic importance reduced to just being thrown into the film just to get them in.
However, I am quite obsessed with that first film. It's flawed but I adore it.
It is about time this news came. The first film was absolutely brilliant, even in its writing (great theme of mother is God - pay attention to the paintings with Christabella standing Godlike over her congregation). Hopefully we'll have Gans back and they can do an almost direct pull from the SH2 game in terms of story. Konami is protective over SH and I am confident that we'll see a great sequel.
The first one was one of the best video game adaptations ever. They nailed the atmosphere of the game spot on and they will deliver perfectly the second time around as long as they stick to Silent Hill and don't go to the other world scenes like they did with the husband and cop.
HELL YES!! this news made my day and put a big smile on my face! i love the orginal film SO much. i hope that Sean Bean's character returns to find Rose. or just simply creating a NEW, good storyline/character would be cool too! i can't wait!
The first one had the MOOD of the series, hopefully the sequel will have a better story.
