'Akira' Lives, Manhattan in Serious Trouble!

The boys over at Collider have learned that Warner Bros. Pictures is still working hard at getting Akira, the live action version of the popular Manga series and animated movie, into theaters. The website breaks some incredible news reporting that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, the duo behind Children of Men and Iron Man, are about to turn in their version of the film that takes place in Manhattan where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers. The gang's leader must find a way to stop the ensuing swathe of destruction. They add that "if the script meets with approval from key people, the movie could go into production in 2010 with a release date in 2011." No word on a new directed yet. Can I get a f*ck yeah?!

hopefully its R, and not a flashy Hollywood PG13 action movie.

Fuck yeah? More like Fuck NO!!!!!!! There is no goddamn way in hell this would ever work in live action. It would be turned into a watered down shitfest.

children of men was brilliant. perhaps better than its screenwriters, though, was its director. i'd love to see alfonso cuaron step in to direct akira. whichever direction the studio goes in, i hope they keep the tone dark; i'm sick of this transformers/g.i. joe bullshit.

I predict a huge fuck up. Not trying to be a negative Nancy, but I just don't see this translating well to film...AMERICAN film at that.

There is literally no way this movie will not be stupid as hell in live action. For fuck's sake, why can't they just leave stuff alone?

I'm on the fence about this. There's really nothing cultural about Akira that would need to be translated to American screens. This is usually where I see American remakes of foreign films screwing up is where they try and Americanize features of the originals that don't come across well when you take them out of France or Japan or wherever they come from. The original feature is visually slick, but a muddled story where half the running time is dialog that doesn't reach too far beyond, "TETSUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" and "KANEDAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!"

pee-eww. pass. Why put it in Manhattan? There's the first mistake. Unless they throw an assload of money at Otomo I can't see him giving this a go-ahead. Uh, Hollywood, why not save that money and hire someone to actually write NEW ideas?

Since it will be Americanized... obviously the movie won't be called Akira... what? Are they going to call it John?

if it's anything less than an R than its not worth our attention. It has to go for broke, negating any fast food chain tie-in. It's gotta include the gore of the gang fights, the shock of Tetsuo's mutations. To explain Manhattan could be an interesting progression in the storyline, especially with the other "experiments". But then it's not a shot for shot remake is it?

This is the holy grail of Anime.Major pressure on whoever attempts this, good luck.

The thing to remember here is the original anime was made before Otomo completed the manga, and was itself watered down from the source story. So it is possible we might end up with a truer adaption (wishful thinking I know). On the manhattan side of things, when they originally announced the setting I think they were saying that the city was now under Jap control or somesuch, so the characters were a mix of japanese and american and the city itself was very neo tokyo influenced.
