'Resident Evil' Franchise Gets Quasi-Reboot with 'Begins'

While Sony Screen Gems is prepping for Resident Evil 4: Afterlife, the 3D sequel slated to arrive in theaters August 27, 2010, Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively (and confirmed) that the studio is already looking forward to the fifth film. While Milla Jovovich is confirmed for Afterlife, it's got to be getting expensive and (increasingly) difficult to keep her onboard, even though she is married to producer Paul W.S. Anderson. Instead of moving forward with the ongoing story, the studio is planning a quasi-reboot, which is tentatively titled Resident Evil Begins. While it's a long, long, long way off, the idea is to redo the story of a special military unit who fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident. What do you guys think about a reboot only 8-9 years after the franchise began?

I like the idea. The red queen from the first movie was a cool villain. Get afterlife out of the way and give me more! Maybe they could get Romero in for one of these. LOL.

Sounds good to me! I'm curious to see how they're going to do this.

I don't quite understand the need for this... unless they went back and explored the STARS mansion incident.

Screw the supercomputer and screw Alice... If they're planning to reboot, how about giving us a proper Resident Evil film adaptation for the fifth movie? Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and a creepy mansion packed with zombies. What we've gotten so far are action movies that only vaguely resemble the proper Resident Evil universe of the original games.

I like having more Resident Evil movies, but I don't like a reboot after 8 or 9 years-especially when the first trilogy has done great. Hulk got a successful reboot not long after Ang Lee's disaster. But Resident Evil has been successful, so I think it's too early. I'm starting to think they are only getting the Resident Evil name rights for money, not story material.

I really don't think it's an amazing idea because there is nothing to really improve upon if you ask me. I like the series as it is right now why ruin it. I admit that the games are better than the series so maybe if they can completely create the atmosphere, terror, creatures and charactures better than this series I'd say go for it. They should pick a person to direct that knows the games well and has a love for them and knows what the fans of the games wan't to see and not just a person that's in it for some quick cash. Other than that if they can't surpass this series I'd say leave it alone and let them continue the series until they decide to have a good closure to it all.

I'm not interested if they are just gonna use the same story with a cheaper cast (which seems to be the issue) Make a new story and it doesn't have to be a reboot; it can just be some other people's story, rather then just Alice. That way, it avoids the annoying reboot tag that causes such complaints.

dont like the sound of the reboot idea sounds a bit like trying to milk the success of batman begins

I always look forward to new additions to the Resident Evil (movie) series with hopes that they will get it right for once. Not that the movies have been horrible, but I feel they could do so much better with what the games have supplied them with. The slow moving, tense atmosphere with a feeling of utter helplessness is almost devoid from the movies. Instead we get superhumans who can destroy 8-bagillion zombies at once and need not be concerned with only being able to hold a pistol, shotgun, and enough ammunition to take down two or three undead creatures before having to resort to a knife that couldn't butter a piece of toast... never mind down a hunter... for survival. It's so simplistic and doable, yet they always seem to overdo it.

Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Zombies, the Spencer mansion, spice it up with some added suspence, and gradual gore and beg George Romero to return to make the movie that was supposed to happen in 99' to hell with remaking the original movie, if theyre going to start over make a faithful movie to the 1st game, It will be awesome.

SCREW THIS SUPERCOMPUTER SHIT! What they need to do is make a movie out of Resident Evil 4 (the game). That would KICK SO MUCH ASS! Resident Evil 4 would make an AMAZING movie. Trust me... if they made a GOOD RE4 movie... it would kill at the box office.

I'm game for it. It could be pretty cool. I dont know the games, so that part doesnt bother me, but hopefully it'll have Milla in it again (and maybe some better effects).

Didn't Anderson say that the 4th movie would begin the new trilogy? I call BS on this piece of news until proven otherwise.

It's funny to see Romero's name came up, considering they were considering him for the first film. He even wrote a screenplay based strongly on the first film, hollywood chose to go the paul. w.s anderson route and i'd love to see them rectafy that mistake

How about fuck this shitty series off and make a proper Resident Evil movie based on the video games with Paul Anderson nowhere to be seen?

Knight of Cydonia
5:05pm, September 7, 2009

I think Paul Anderson needs to buy a gun and blow his fucking brains out instead of continuously making movies based on video games and HORRIBLY fucking up the story. His version of "Resident Evil" should NEVER have been made. Why the FUCK didn't they stick with George A. Romero's script for the first film?!! IT WAS SO PERFECT!!!!

Trioxin83
5:06pm, September 7, 2009

they should just use the game as the script

I like it when Alice kills the Zombies :( Please don't take away Alice..

They need to stick to the games as much as possible. The reason the movies suck is because they go off in their own direction that ends up being totally different. For the reboot, get rid of Milla Jovovich. Her character was never in the series anyways. Stick to the mansion having been taken over by zombies and not a computer.

Being successful dosen't = being good fight club was a bust at the box office but I bet you can tell me what rules of fight club i joke broke by even typing this. and we all know that Halloween Remake did well at box office but was pretty bad. <br> They need to reboot it and stick with the game's story line but have the main characters of the game be side characters and vice versa because like a lot of people have played the game, I rather not watch the events of an 8 hour game compacted into a 2 hour movie. I rather have a satisfying side story that fits in with that 8 hour game that takes 2 hours. If you don't believe I'm right look at what degeneration did it took what would be an 8 hour game and compressed it down. and what RE1 movie did by not having any of the original game's STARs team but having an original character that had a satisfying story however you knew it was different which ruined it.

to knight of sedonia, amen brother, Romero's script was perfect, I remember reading it on more than one posting, it gave me goosebumps, he really stuck close to the s.t.a.r.s. mansion incident, and it would have made a perfect movie I really can't see how they dumped that in favor of paul andersons script, there were even really awesome aliens vs predator scripts that stuck closely to the original comics that would have been infinetly better, but thats hollywood for you
