High Profile Writer on 'Children of the Corn' Remake

I guess the Weinstein Company's way of erasing public doubt is to announce a bunch of projects that we all know will NEVER happen. In an article about The Road (arriving in theaters October 16), it was revealed that Weinstein has tapped Ehren Kruger (The Skeleton Key, The Ring) to adapt Stephen King short story Children of the Corn, which tells the story of a boy preacher who persuades the children in a Nebraska town to kill all the adults. "Corn" was previously made into a feature in 1984 by New World Pictures, with a TV remake airing on SyFy soon. See what they had to say about the original below.

"We felt the New World film was a missed opportunity," said Weinstein. "If you read the short story, it's got such a strong feeling to it and there's this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It's popular in Hollywood to say you re-envisioning a project but a lot of the time they're just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story."

The fact of the matter is, they've been trying to make this, Scanners and Hellraiser for years now, and I highly doubt any of these will come into fruition, especially after the public humiliation about their financial woes. Halloween tanks and they're rushing to make a sequel and another horror film, while pushing The Road as a cannibalistic horror tale? What gives? That's just the charm of the Weinstein brothers I guess.

seems like desperation is taking over with them now

It's like if you step outside the box and look in, it's so obvious. All of the bad PR, they're obviously trying to look like they've got their sh*t together.

How many adaptations are they going to make? Sci-Fi just made one.

Sorry, but Ehren Kruger is a hack. Please name me one good movie he's written, and The Ring doesn't count-it was an adaptation of the original foreign film. Skeleton Key was decent, but ultimately, nothing to get overly excited about. Let's not forget he wrote Transformers 2. 'Nuff said.

I like Ehren Kruger. I think the next remake could be great. But I agree about the short story, it was a completely different tone. The original was almost comical, where the short story was pretty intense for the 33 pages that it lasted.

The Road looks terrible and doesn't even look like a horror film. I'm sure it will tank.

When are they coming out with "Children of the SoyBean Patch?"

Ehren Kruger, huh?...Here comes another PG-13, faux horror, crapfest. I have yet to be impressed with anything that he's written, or script doctored for that matter.

maybe they can use the huge profit from Inglourious Basterds to fund this lol. I'm sure H2 will make a better profit with DVD sales. Whatever, not exciting news.

I would love it if someone could successfully transfer the horror of the short story to the screen. The original film is classic, but a gritty, scary remake would actually be nice.

Mr. D, I have to protest the use of the phrase "tank" to describe HALLOWEEN 2's box office performance. While I agree with the majority of fans and filmgoers that the movie is a turd and its #3 opening and #6 second week rankings were inauspicious, it doesn't take a mathematician to know that a film which earns back nearly twice its production costs in eleven days domestic release is a financial success. Critically and artistically, HALLOWEEN 2 tanked (and deservedly so). But monetarily, it's doing fairly well. When foreign sales and DVD revenues are factored in, it will have made a sizable profit for the Weinsteins. If their company does go under, it won't be because of HALLOWEEN 2... it'll be because THE ROAD fails to recoup its own considerably higher costs.

Wait so we are getting a 3rd version? And its announced before the remake even airs?? Um ok. Love King, but Children of the Corn was ok. The original movie was ok in how silly it was. Don't know how the remake will turn out, but do we really need 3 versions? And was the King story really that good to warrent 3 movies?

Kruger only wrote a few movies I can stand. I do not consider him a writer worth getting excited over.

Remakes of Psycho, Black Christmas, Halloween, etc. were not needed because they were perfect the first time and as we all know, the remakes were godawful. Sometimes remakes can improve upon the originals if they are done right. I'm still awaiting a faithful adaption to Flowers in the Attic yet filmmakers would rather tackle classic horror films. Children of the Corn is no classic and could use improvement so a remake isn't a bad idea. It is strange they made a version for TV and now are doing one for film. But I remember they did the same thing with Titanic and The Poseidon Adventure. Those were both remakes on the originals and around the same time, they both had TV versions done.
