Update: EVEN MORE casting inside! Two of Darren Lynn Bousman's proteges have rejoined him for his forthcoming remake of Mother's Day. Alexa Vega, who played Shilo in Bousman's Repo! The Genetic Opera, and Briana Evigan, who starred in his Fear Itself episode "New Year's Day", have both joined the previously announced Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") in the remake of the classic Troma movie from 1980, reports Dread Central. Shooting begins this month in Winnipeg, Canada. Evigan can be seen in Summit's Sorority Row later this month. In the Scott Milam scripted remake, three brothers on the run from the law head for home, only to discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure. Mother ingeniously orchestrates her sons' escape, teaching the house's new owners and their guests a few lessons along the way.
Jaime King (The Tripper, My Bloody Valentine 3D) has her cards and flowers ready for "Mother's Day," Darren Lynn Bousman's remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic, and Shawn Ashmore (The Ruins, Frozen), Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega and Matt O'Leary (who stars alongside Briana in Sorority Row next month) are in talks to join the production, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
King will play the woman of the house, a wife who has lost her child and is isolating herself from her husband.
Ashmore and Evigan will play guests at the house. O'Leary ("CSI") is one of Mother's sons, joining the already cast Deborah Ann Woll as members of the family.
"What we're trying to do is elevate this outside of a genre movie," Bousman said. "I've done three 'Saw' films, I've done 'Repo,' and yes, this is horrific at times, but it's much darker and deeper because of the focus on the characters."
The Genre Co. and Rat Entertainment are producing the remake, and LightTower Entertainment is financing. A spring release timed to Mother's Day is being eyed, with shooting set to begin next month in Winnipeg.
Briana is a very good actress from what I've seen so far and Alexa Vega is AMAZING. She was perfect in Repo! and she's made me laugh more than once on her new ABC family show, Ruby And The Rockits. Oh, and she's also really really nice. I am so excited for this.
Fantastic cast! Vega can act for sure and you add Briana Evigan and Deborah Ann Woll you have a more talented cast then Sorority Row for sure. I'm excited to see who the villians are going to be.
An interesting thing is happening here. I like Darren Bousman, I like these chicks, I'm generally very open-minded and positive about remakes, and I love MOTHER'S DAY (have my Lloyd Kaufman autographed DVD in a special place on my DVD shelf), yet I'm becoming more and more skeptical that this is remake is going to satisfy. Maybe it's just that MOTHER'S DAY is the sort of film that doesn't lend itself to being redone "Hollywood-style". I'll give it a shot, of course, but I'm not convinced yet.
And here's why I'm not excited, in a nutshell: >"This film is more along the lines of CAPE FEAR. The original 1980 Mother's Day was a movie for its time. I love it. But that movie would not work now. The thing about the original is everyone has copied, stolen, and borrowed from it countless times," he explains talking about his intent to make something original.< So he's borrowing/stealing/copying the title and making a completely different film? That wouldn't really constitute a "remake", would it? I'm starting to get a "Let's remake FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!, but this time make the three leads bitchy high school cheerleaders!" or "Let's redo THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, with a rap motif!" vibe. After all, those movies "wouldn't really work today", would they?
LOL, Jkrouskop, that's exactly what MTV's planning to do with Rocky Horror Picture Show! Just like they plan on remaking The Warriors, setting it in Los Angeles and using realistic gang warfare as opposed to the more over-the-top gangs and New York setting. THAT type of re-imagining is bad, IMO. Then again, that's almost how every re-imagined movie is nowadays.
With Briana Evigan on board, I'm now on board as well. Loved her in "Step Up 2" and can't wait to see her in "Sorority Row" and "Burning Bright". I used to have a crush on Alexa Vega back when she was in the "Spy Kids" trilogy but I haven't seen her in anything since then, so it'll be nice to see her back on the big screen.
If this is a remake of the same "Mother's Day" I'm thinking about it would be impossible to make a worst movie than the original film. Either way, great news on Evigan and Vega, both sexy as hell, and I loved Matt O'Leary in Frailty.
maybe I'm missing something...i read and re-read the synopsis of the plot in this article...what does this movie have to do with the original Mother's Day? am i missing something?
