I know I am supposed to use this platform to talk about horror, so here you go, the horrors of seeing a movie in a theater. I've had it, I'm fed up and I'm raging war. I urge you all to spread the word, who knows, maybe the collective voice of us horror fans will turn into the collective voice of CHUD fans or AICN fans, before erupting into the public eye of CNN, FOX and beyond. Cell phone use in movies, it's out of control. I paid $13-f*cking-50 tonight to see a movie in a theater that swears by their "no cell phone use" policy (the Arclight in Sherman Oaks, CA). Through the entire feature people were checking their texts and answering calls. One douche next to me had it on the ENTIRE movie, but made sure to cup it with his knee. This isn't fair and it's bullcrap. We all work really hard to go out and enjoy a night at the movies just to have it ruined everything-single-mother-effin-time; it's ridiculous. If you're one of these people, I beg you to cut it out, tell your friends to cut it out and spread the word. Don't tolerate it anymore. Complain before, during and after the movie. Demand refunds. If enough people start ragin' war, they'll start to listen. I want to live in a world where there's zero tolerance for cell phone use in theaters and people are escorted out for doing so. For real, what's so important that you need to be texting through the entire movie? Your girl is next to you (hopefully) and your buddies are still gonna have plenty of booze after the movie ends. Now I'm going to bed pissed off and angry, thanks. Talk about it below.
"So Bob says to me, 'Nancy, you've got to get an iPhone!'"
UPDATE: Arclight's response below:
"Dear Brad:
Thank you for contacting ArcLight Cinemas.
I apologize for your experience at ArcLight Sherman Oaks. May I inquire as to the date, show time, and film your experience was in, so that I may further follow up with the managers at ArcLight Sherman Oaks?
I read the article, and I understand your frustration, as obviously many others do by the large number of responses to your article. As an employee of ArcLight I am obviously uncomfortable with the name of our theater publicized in a bad light, and we wish to correct the situation as much as possible. I hope we come to a point at which it is not necessary to baby-sit our guests and check on cell phone usage—we check our theaters to maintain our picture and sound presentation, usually which takes place out of sight of the guests, in the hallway. Certain films seem to bring out the cell phone-using guests, however.
Again, I do apologize for the situation, and I encourage you to visit guest services after a show like that, or find an employee during the show to correct the situation—not just in our theaters, but in any theater or performance.
Please feel free to contact me again if I can be of any further assistance. We value and appreciate both you and your business."
I'm with you on that when I went to see Friday the 13th remake I also was mad because of this stupid girl infront of me was on her damn cell phone texting away threw the whole movie and was blinding me with the screen of her phone , I could have kill her right there an then , I'm with you man it's got to stop . Rob_Jerrylee .
Amen! Fucking cell phones need to be turned OFF during movies. I had some kid checking the time on his every 2 minutes last week. I finally snatched it slammed it closed and threw it back at him.
Yeah....I gave up long ago. Plus, Hi-Def and 5.1 take a lot of the luster off of the theater. I just rent now. I might see a movie every 3 months, and those are on Sat and Sun at noon, two weeks after release.
you should hit a theater in Manhattan. Moving here killed all urges to see films with the number of people who are on the phone, text, bring in entire shopping bags of food, etc. What I want to know is what kind of job they have where they can afford to throw away $15 on a movie ticket just to sit in the dark and talk. Last flick my girlfriend and I saw had people on both sides of us talking the entire film on their phones. When people asked them to stop the talked LOUDER. Nice.
Right there with you! Last night I suffered through The Orphan, and the cell/text douchebags were everywhere. They illuminate the theater, catch your eye weather you want to see them or not, and make enough noise to sound like a Chuck E Cheeses! The movie was bad enough but this crap ruined the whole night!
Mob violence could erupt! I HATE noisy, rude fuckers on their cellphones in theaters! I recommend beaning them w/ goobers or raisinets, or milkduds. If that doesn't work, dump a coke on 'em! Stupid, mindless assholes!...
I know exactly what you mean. I've experienced the same thing plenty of times at that exact same Arclight! They don't enforce their supposed rule about not letting people walk in late though either. I feel you pain though Greekthunder. The few times I've been to a movie in New York it was ridiculous. Once there was a girl who (I kid you not) kept standing up in the theater and yelling out comments about the actors!
This is why I love living in a small town far far away from america, I haven't seen someone use a cellphone during a movie in our local theater.. ever! :D
Must be pritty damn annoying though, can't even begin to imagine how pissed I'd be.
Last night I went to see The Collector and this guy next to me kept texting for the first 30 minutes and laughing at the texts and showing them off to the girl next to him and his buddy 2 seats away from him. I got so pissed, I looked at him and said really loud "WILL YOU PLEASE PUT THAT AWAY?! IT'S FUCKING ANNOYING." Thank God the theatre was packed, everyone in front of us turned and looked and the people behind us supported and aggreed with me.
It's a fucking joke isn't it. It's just bad manners and people not having any respect for their fellow theatre goers, especially when most cinemas flash ads saying to turn phones off before the movie starts.
Find someone who works there (preferably a friend), and when people are doing that during the movie, hit their number on your phone (you dont have to have it seen or even talk) to alert them that it's going on. That's one of my perks to the fact that my friends work at the theater. I've gotten two people escorted out because of it. :)
Dude, I got banned from a theater for punching some punk in his face cause he wouldnt stop talking on his phone and my wife turns around and tells him to get off and her told her to fuck off so i got up and climbed over the row and punched his fucking face in. I had a big war with the theater cause we wanted our money refunded and they wouldnt. Not even a correcting to that punk ass kid. They didnt even throw him out. He had to leave cause his face was swelling but that was cause of me not them. Its fucking stupid and they should not allow people to bring in there cell phones to movies.
i am so with ya it is annoying! i also heard few people talking on there phones wheneever my now hubby and i seen friday the thirteenth remake and its rediciculous when u hear stupid teenagers yaking away on the phone whenever u are watching a movie. if u tell them to please go out of the room to talk o ranything they just look at you. people have no respect anymore.........hey horrorfan i cant beleive thaty they wouldnt refund your money thats bullshit. they should have refunded u or something.
Completely agree, how hard is to set your phone on silent and check it after tha movies over. I highly doubt everyone in audience is a doctor or paramedic thats on call and has to keep there phone for work reasons. This is why I started to go to matinees but found another form of annoyance people who bring little kids and babies to a movie they have no business in because they cant find a babysitter the last two movies I saw friday the 13 and drag me to hell were like this it is fucking annoying to have some little brat running around the theatre screaming and crying and whininng becuase they didn't get candy or whatever, This is an annoyance trying to hear a crucial piece of dialouge that is important to the story line and you cant hear cause some kid is screaming their head off. There should be a policy to keep little kids in the theatres where they belong you know the one thats showing that stupid kids movie or whatever. We pay good money to see these movies and the theatres need to enforce the polices that they have so the rest of us that are actually watching the movie can enjoy it.
Or maybe we should not copy the scene from Scary Movie where the black woman is stabbed alot from the audience for talking rather loudly on her mobile and thus disturbing their cinema experience. There problem solved.
people don't do it much in the midwest but you do tend to have a few jackasses in packed theaters. I think here we'd just do an old fashion red-neck lynching. I hate inconsiderate people...
