SDCC '09: James Wan to Write and Direct 'Castlevania'!

Bloody-Disgusting can exclusively announce here that James Wan, the co-mastermind behind the Saw franchise, and director of Dead Silence and Death Sentence, will be co-writing and directing Castlevania! Inside you'll find a tid-bit from Wan about his forthcoming adaptation. Sylvain White was originally slated to direct. Castlevania is an adaptation of the popular NES game from the 80's that has since become a massive video game franchise.

"I'm very fresh on this project, so its early stages and I'm still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it," James Wan tells Bloody-Disgusting in an exclusive chat. "I'll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about.

"The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania, was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility," he continues. "That’s the East-meets-West tone I want to visually expand on for the film. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to make a highly stylized, fantasy, action film that focuses on the gothic storyline and the cool, anime-like characters. For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain, and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place – The Vampire Killer Whip.

Everything works in this poster EXCEPT for that damn sword! Castlevania took place in Europe, not Japan. Other then that, pretty damn exciting news!

I agree about the sword, as long as Sylvian White aint touching this i'm happy....But i just feel that Wan is the wrong person for this, it doesn't seem like him to start doing game to film adaptations............Also this is a poster to the upcoming game, not the movie

this...could be amazing.

Ehhh... Is that what they are making the Vampire Killer look like in this film (Being that is even a Belmont wielding the Vampire Killer)?? And what game is this a poster for next-gen? Lord of Shadow? Because it isn't.

if Wan can pull a Saw 1 with this it could work I'm in partial agreement with the sword but at the same time Alucard was known to travel across the world.... but who remembers Alucard with a whip? and where the F*** IS A BELMONT!

I thought they said this had been canned?

has it been said that, that alucard is the main character in this flick or are we just assuming?

magnaderalpha

It doesn't look like Alucard. Just because he has white hair and wields a sword doesn't mean a thing. Juste had white hair. Hector and Soma had white hair. I find it interesting, though. This poster is legit, right? Cause if it is, wow, these guys know how to keep true to the later CV games(the IGA-vanias), cause that character(a Belmont, no doubt) looks very Ayami Kojima-ish in design. For those of you not familiar with the CV series, Ayami Kojima was the character designer for Symphony of the Night, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, Lament of Innocence, Curse of Darkness and the Dracula X Chronicles. The whole "merging of Eastern and Western influences" really has me hopeful. That's how a CV movie SHOULD be. And it's good to see Konami having a healthy relationship with Wan and company. They wouldn't let anybody do this movie, and when someone wants to do, either a book, comic or film of their games, they provide them with all the background resources, game histories, plot details, character and monster designs to help them keep true to the source material.

It's probably just an assumption, Justin. A lot of CV fans are really only in it for Symphony of the Night, and ride along with that bandwagon. I'm hoping we get Simon Belmont here. And it's totally possible that he could have obtained a Japanese sword like that, because it is, after all, EASTERN Europe, and it's possible that he could have bought it from a market, or it could have been given to him by a wandering samurai or something. Anything is possible, but as long as he's got the whip...

saw was a competently-directed, surprisingly good horror flick. death sentence, however, was GARBAGE.

Sounds good. :) Now this movie has some hope.

This isn't even a goddamn legit poster, fuck. Just some bullshit someone threw together. Anywho, James Wann is better than Uwe Bowell but that doesn't make this an instant awesome film. I'm waiting for the cast to be announced and a trailer. At least the new game looks awesome.

Frontal Lobe

This teaser poster was created by the Aaron Sims Company specifically for James Wan's version of the movie. The Japanese sword is intentional.

Look at Saw and Death Sentence, James Wan is perfect to direct Silent Hill 2, the horror and emotion is shot perfectly. This should be fun too.

The depressorama continues.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Leave Castlevania alone you rubbish film making chumps!

Blood-Sicles
10:05am, July 23, 2009

If they went for the mood in the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow" trailer, I'd freaking worship them! But with Paul Anderson producing, this might just be a failed attempt at cheesy action. James Wan, having failed at Dead Silence and Death Sentence, doesn't make me any happier about this. Atleast we still have the games...

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA Beat Uwe Boll to it, didja? Thank God... I don't think I could take another disaster like "House of the Dead"

Excellent news. Can't wait for Wan's latest. :)
