I think that the numbers do lie. If you look at the box office for a lot of horror films, you will see that there is heavy front-loading. The films tend to have a huge opening, and then fall completely off in their second weeks. That's why the studio/theater split is about 80%/20% in the first week. Studios know that if they can market a film correctly, a lot of the less discriminating members of the public will go to see it on opening weekend. Friday the 13th fell about 80% in it's second week of domestic exhibition. The film was universally panned, and most horror films found it to be just awful.

You're right Brad, horror movies have been being remade for a long long long time. However, no one in the history of cinema has done it as poorly as you and the others at Platinum Dunes. I have not been complaining that these movies I adore are being remade. I am complaining about who they are being remade by. Like I said earlier in a comment to you in your last blog post, I can't wait for the new Night of the Demons remake. If whoever is working on that was making the new Nightmare on Elm Street, I would be stoked. If Alex Aja was making this, I would be stoked. But they aren't, some no talent hacks are. To say that looking at box office numbers shows that majority of fans think your work is entertaining is flawed. Let me just say you are lucky to have such a good marketing team. It's because of this relentless marketing the movies do average to well at the BO. However, remember when Friday the 13th had a huge opening, then dropped drastically? You know what that was Brad? It's a thing called word of mouth. Lots of people went to see Friday the 13th that weekend, but many of those very same people told their families, friends, and coworkers that the movie was a piece of shit, so not that many people went to see it after that since they heard it was so bad. I'm doing some research on Rotten Tomatoes looking at the companies films ratings. Let's take a look. Friday the 13th - 26% The Hitcher - 19% The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - 13% The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - 36% The Unborn - 12% The Amityville Horror - 24% Horsemen - N/A 1 fresh review, 2 rotten Congratulations, PD! You have yet to make a movie, original or remake, that the general public thinks is HALF WATCHABLE. P.S. Not a writer, just hate what this company is doing to the genre. I work market research in a small town in KY.

Yeah but get used to the negativity and criticism, it's the damn internet what can you expect? You can make an oscar winning horror film about jason or leatherface or whoever else and there will still be people who hate your interpretation, or well i should say the writers' interpretation. that's just something that goes with the territory, if you add fuel to the fire, it's going to just get worse. ignore it and it'll make your life easier

I love Brad, but something has to be said if they started filming in May, and finished like a week or two ago, and the NOES comes out next spring; while Rob Zombie's been filming Halloween 2 for like a million years, and still isnt done and the movie comes out next month... I just hope NOES is better than Friday; it wasnt horrible, it just could have been better....

Me personally, I don't give a shit if they remake a film. Just as long as its a good movie. Like Brad said its not like he is destroying the original movies. On another hand people have a right to express there concerns about the casting, story, ETC. Everyone who isn't thrilled about certain aspects of a remake isn't a hater...

JIGSAW09 I definitely agree with you. The original is my all time favorite movie in the world, and I've never been repulsive to remakes, but I really am disappointed they are remaking this one. Expensive advertising, like the one sheet, the staged pictures, or the new comic con footage shown can all look good and awesome and cool, but it's not going to govern whether the movie is good or pathetically lame, cliché, and down-right terrible from story to characters. Don't get me wrong, I really want them to prove me 110% wrong, but they did the exact same the thing with Friday the 13th with advertising and such and the movie turned out to be a complete failure, the characters all seemed to be expendable, predictable, and thinner than cardboard -- they had absolutely nothing to them and I could care less which one was picked off next. It was basically another sequel with a new bunch of kids that are slaughtered. If it is a REMAKE of an ORIGINAL movie then the remake actually has to be original -- and I'm sad to say it wasn't in the least. Which leads me to say that the real main problem with remakes is that people pick up the idea because they know: # 1 It makes money (proved time and time again it sells to remake a classic, whether they deny it or not it's the MONEY!), second is it's the perfect scape goat for upcoming directors, actors, writers, etc. to have their name known and gain extra fame through a well-known name, in this case NOES, and lastly and most importantly is with the knowledge of all this above, the select people behind these remakes don't spend their time wisely on key elements that made the originals ACTUALLY good! They spend their time on the ONLY thing they know: the iconic character that made it famous, the killer. When they do this they ignore character development, and key storytelling elements that are absolutely essential to making a good film (but it doesn't matter to them, it makes the $$$ either way) and us unintelligent fans buy into the whole idea and flock to the theaters anyway (even though truthfully I will also probably go see it in theaters JUST because it's my favorite film). I have even more confirmed faith that the film will disappoint because we all have past proof of several terrible remakes before this one (all under the belt of the same ones in charge of the NOES remake), otherwise I wouldn't be so quick to judge. The film is already wrapped up so I know that nothing is going to be undone what already is done. I just want everyone to open their eyes and not be so brainwashed by the same filth that drew us in time and time before! Message to those involved in my favorite movie remake: PROVE ME WRONG PLEASE!
