Is 'The Flock' the Deadliest Predators of All?

Producers Don Murphy and John Wells have teamed up to option The Flock, a novel by James Robert Smith that sounds like a mix between Jurassic Park and The Birds. The book tells the story of a group of highly intelligent giant prehistoric birds discovered in the Florida Everglades who are intent on protecting their ancient home when faced with encroachment by theme park developers. Read on for an interesting story on how the book was discovered.

Murphy is producing with Angryfilms partner Susan Montford while Wells will produce with his company's president, Claire Polstein.

Murphy, a producer on "Transformers" with Tom DeSanto and Lorenzo DiBonaventura, discovered Smith and his book by chance. Murphy was on the blog of Eddie Campbell, the artist of "From Hell," an Alan Moore graphic novel whose big-screen translation was produced by Murphy.

Smith was posting comments critical of the film, putting Murphy on the defensive. Eager to find out more about the poster, Murphy discovered Smith had written a book. He quickly ordered it, expecting to hate it and ready to trash it. To his surprise, he fell for it.

Just as long as the birds look nothing like that picture on the book we'll be good. If they do I will be there for the laughfest.

Kind of reminds me of those birds from 10,000 B.C.

I am with Smith, the "From Hell" movie was lousy. The comic was so much better.

Doesn't the Sci-fi channel have enough of this fodder already?

So nobody noticed these giant prehistoric birds running around the Everglades until now? Ooookay.

I'm definitely not saying there are giant prehistoric birds in the Everglades but it's pretty damn arrogant to assume humans have seen everything on this planet, we know more about space than the bottom of the ocean for fucks sake. I'm definitely rootning for the giant birds.

I don't know how the book is but maybe this will be alright if it's like Jurassic Park. Could be a fun adventure sci-fi movie. Might be even better if they make it a little more on the "Horror" side of things.

As corny as it may be, I really dig movies like this.

The cover art suggests that this is a species of "terror bird" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terror_bird) formerly of the pampas. Without a mammalian superpredator available in the Cenozoic (wolf, bear, lion), South America evolved a bird to fill the role. Nice ... but even by boneheaded Hollywood standards it's hard to defend sticking a beast built for the savanna into the Everglades.

Sounds Good!
