'The Crow' Remake a Reboot, New Characters

A source very close to the development of the forthcoming The Crow remake tells Mania that Stephen Norrington is set to deliver his script for the film this month and that it will be very different from the James O'Barr adaptation from 1994. Their source says that the story is "very different from the original - a whole new story about a whole new character." Norrington told Variety, "[Alex] Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style." Eric Draven will be missed, but at least he's immortalized by the late Brandon Lee.

There is BD's favourite word again... 'reboot'! Of all the remakes announced this has to be the worst of the lot, they really should just leave The Crow well alone. :(

OH for crying out loud.... GET A BLOODY ORIGINAL IDEA ALREADY!! the crow has been done, it was great, we loved it.. move on. I can not believe there are no original ideas in tinseltown... why is so much power and money in the hands of a few clueless morons?

Stephen Norrington should just stay put in McDonalds where his new job is. He doesn't deserve his dream job back because League of Extraordinary Gentleman was lame and flopped. His script is actually 'Death Sentence' written bt James Wan, he just deleted the title and is hoping for the best. Shame on him. THE CROW DOES NOT NEED A REBOOT!!!! IT's one off STORY! It was done perfectly in 1994.

Big deal, each film had a different guy playing The Crow anyway. Nothing new. So what makes Norrington think he is on to something groundbreaking here? He only see the first one?

That's just disrespectful to re-make "the crow".

Whats the point in making this film a reboot? Why not just have it as a sequel? They garner more support from the fans as opposed to the "re-envisioning!". Either way its going to suck, you can't make a good Crow film without Brandon Lee (just ask David Boreanez). It wasn't meant to be a massive franchise, it was meant to be a cash cow that turned into a huge success.

Than whats the fucking point if its all new characters? They can't do that! This is just a sequel than... But they call it a reboot. this is fucked up.

Well lets face it, none of the Crow films had the same characters?

good lord, I give up on Hollywood. Hmm, I wonder if this is going to be the rumored The Crow vs. Predators!

The original Crow is one of my faves. It was lightening in a bottle, everything worked. Lee's death and the way they worked around it both worked for the film and added some mysticism to it. The Crow does have potential to be a franchise, just like after its success several more comics were written about different Crows, including by James O'Barr, but all of the sequels have been awful.

so it's really just another sequel. and that actually sounds better then remake.

boooooring. The first Crow was great but that was then, i see no reason for a reboot or even new sequels

i read all the comments but never post but now i feel i have to. first they remake american werewolf in london now the crow. i think hollywood need to get a grip on reality and see that remakes are the devil`s spawn. there ae plenty of talented writers out there who would kill to get one of their screenplays turned into a movie why not give one of them a chance and stop raping my filmhood with all this shit pg-13 kids horror movies. how about we try a change of direction make a kids movie into an adult movie i would love to see a r rated batman by nolen come on holywood stop making movies everyone has seen before get some new blood who could maybe revitalise the industry

All films about supernaturally-resurrected avengers should be as "realistic" as humanly possible. Furthermore, 'The Hobbit' should be filmed "almost-documentary style" so that the audience really feels as though it's in Middle-earth. Christ.

no no no NO NO!!!

A realistic approach won't work. This will fail hard.

"Furthermore, 'The Hobbit' should be filmed "almost-documentary style" so that the audience really feels as though it's in Middle-earth." LOL! That is some funny shit, Boilersuit. The studios, in their infinite wisdom, decided some time ago that releasing a film called "The Crow" in 2009 would be a much more successfull venture than releasing a film called "The Crow: City of Wicked Salvation" or whatever. We're really only talking about the title here. With none of the original characters, this will likely be more of the same direct-to-DVD crap we've been getting all along. Only with better distribution and promotion.

Actually if anyone has ever read the miniseries "Deadtime" which is co-written by James O'Barr, that had a 'gritty realism' that could be adapted and turned into a film. It was also a new set of characters, whilst being true to the original. I rather liked it, and the Alex Maleev art was really well done, and had a more real edge to it. I could see this being turned into a film. And for all it's flaws I did like the 3rd Crow film. At least it had a more enjoyable cast, and Eric Mabius was the best Crow since Brandon Lee, if only they could have made the movie more of a mystery than it was. But I imagine that the producers must feel they have something on their hands otherwise they would not gamble with a theatrical release of this. Not saying that it will be good (I will not judge till I see it), but this is not a normal comic book adaptation, so unless they plan to do a PG-13 adaptation (which would be shite in my eyes), I don't know why they are trying this now. It seems like every producer is trying to cash in on the so-called 'comic book movie craze', which is ok, if they try something different. If they want dark, why not do Matt Wagner's Grendel, or someone actually get off their heiny and do the bloody Werewolf BY Night film. I could even see a reboot of ManThing, as it was abyssmal, and not even close to the heart of Steve Gerber's muck monster. The Crow got it right, and is the only movie in the franchise that O'Barr acknoledges, so let's move on, unless they do a 'Deadtime' adaptation like I mention before.

For fucks sake, what's next, a remake/reboot of The Breakfast Club? Crow is my favorite comic book movie of all time, I am not a happy camper about this.

is nothing sacred to the executives any more? an onslaught of crappy direct to dvd sequels was one thing, but to remake the original... i think this will make more people unhappy than the other way around.
