A disappointing piece of news that has been circulating around the web was that Warner Bros. Pictures' adaptation of Dark Shadows was hitting some rough waters. Some good news comes out of the recent junket for Public Enemies as Johnny Depp is telling reporters the project could be Tim Burton's next, read on for the full story.

‘Dark Shadows’ is happening," Depp tells Collider. "Tim is working on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which is obviously quite a large piece of work there. So when Tim is done with ‘Alice’ and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we’ll probably attack it next year. It’s exciting, very exciting. It’s like a lifelong dream for me. I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six. I’m very excited to do it.

Over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies. The show has a continuing rabid fan base that populates Dark Shadows Festival conventions. Numerous TV revivals of the series and pic adaptations have been attempted over the years but none with as high-wattage a star as Depp.

I am baffled that the media still has this perception that the Dark Shadows movie was always in danger of not being made. The disappointment is based on the fact that the movie won't be filmed until next year contradicting Zanuck's earlier statement that the Dark Shadows movie would be filmed this summer/fall. The disappointment also is based on the fact that Tim Burton has consistently delayed the DS movie from being filmed by his experimenting with 3D in his Alice movie. The disappointment also is based on the DS script still not being completed. Writer John August has been writing this script for the past two years.

Lets hope it all comes together and gives the Dark Shadows universe a proper transference to film. Such a cult classic deserves the time and care it needs to properly develop. Lets just hope the wait is worth it.

looking forward to this... bit too old school for many of these youngsters but the tv show was WAY ahead of its time... and while its popular for many people to hate on T.Burtons style he would be one of very few to do this justice

I hope it never, ever gets made. I love dark shadows but it was a fucking tv series. How you can like take a 40 year old very long running television show and then put it in the hands of hollywood and turn it into a feature film is beyond me. I dont see how a show of over 1000 episodes is turned into a single movie.

Gargus they did manage to make two previous Dark Shadows theatrical movies. But you are right. It is going to be difficult to come up with a good story and that is why it may be taking John August a very long time to finish the script.

Well, "HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS" summed up the show pretty well and turned out to be a Classic, itself! The 1991 remake was a pretty good version of all that had come before and so now, I'm wondering... What are they gonna do that's fresh and not the "same, old thing". I just hope they don't go for the usually Depp-Burton wackiness! That would be wrong for such a serious, Gothic story. Tim will make it look gorgeous, I'm sure! Helena Boham-Carter-Burton will probably play Julia Hoffman...I'll bet on it!

The writer has his hands full. He could begin the story in the past; have another character discover Barnabas etc… John August is kind of limited because he needs to tell a DS story to a whole new audience who never heard of Dark Shadows (Twilight fans for example). He has to do all of the character introductions and associated character developments and tell a story probably in less than two hours so I don’t expect a drastic change in the characters. Now Tim Burton’s stylistic version/interpretation is another thing.

Tim Burton? Johnny Depp? Vampires? Dark Shadows? Barnabas Collins? Well, hopefully this'll revive the idea that vampires actually aren't sparkling pussies.

Not a T.B fan, however, that being said, I have to profess that gothic is one thing that I think he does really well. A good example of that and the one film I truly like from him is Sleepy Hollow . I know he likes Hammer and Bava films and thats the kind of astheics this film needs to maybe make it work. Lets see what he's got, Ill give it a shot.

ok not to sound too much like a perv here lol but i wonder who will play carolyn, victoria and maggie? my vote goes for anna paquin as victoria winters. be cool to see angeligue as the villian and have her be played by angelina jolie.

I never have a seen a full episode of Dark Shadows. I've always been aware of it, but wasn't interested when I saw re-runs on tv as a kid. Anyway, I'm pretty interested now. On another note, that is a wonderfully art-sy picture of Johnny Depp.
