Kevin Smith's 'Red State' in a Bad State
Saturday, June 13, 2009

While on hand at the Monster Mania convention in Connecticut, a B-D regular contacted us about a Q+A session that just ended with Jason Mewes, best known as Jay in Kevin Smith's comedies. Mewes told the audience that the Weinstein Company has passed on Smith's horror script Red State, adding that the project is on hold indefinitely as there are two movies already planned to go before State. I can't say I was all that excited anyways for this horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America.

Kevin Smith is one of my favorite filmmakers, and I hope his first horror film will see greenlight! I'm sure another studio will see different than the Weinsteins.

This news kinda confuses me. First off, he put this on hold to do Zack and Miri, which I thought was pretty sub-par. Then, he said that he was kind of excited to do a film without the Weinsteins since he hadn't made a film without their support for a long time. Then, he starts talking about doing a hockey movie. So, is this project even real? Did he get cold feet because no one would finance it? Maybe it, I dunno, actually sucks and no one wants to touch it with a 40-foot pole. It sounded like he was so passionate about trying something new so he could prove to himself that he was more than a "dick-and-fart" joke guy and he seems afraid to try it now. I was really looking forward to it, too.

On Smodcast (during production of Zack and Miri), he talked a bit about Red State and how he was excited to get into it once he was done with that, but then it all just sort of stopped...Hmm...I dont know.

I like kevin smith as a writer, in the the same way that babies like their safety blankets, they are always there and dependable, even if they do tend to get less interesting as the child gets older. But I wanted to see him do something for once that didnt depend on just a bunch of slackers standing around reading scripts off like they were doing public access tv with a bunch of dick and fart jokes thrown in.

I thought this sounds pretty cool.

This isn't exactly news, though... The Weinsteins said a LONG time ago that they weren't interested in funding Red State, and Smith is filming "A Couple of Dicks Right Now," just started this week, I think, and has already said that though the script is done Red State is on the back burner... but he said he is determined to do it.

Hopefully this film never gets made since the premise sounds incredibly fucking stupid.

I say good.... Why don't kevin just produce it himself or have another studio look at it, the fucking Weinstein's would of fucked it up and made it PG-13 or edited to much out anyways. They fuck up everything. Shouldn't they just like go bankrupt already. Please.... go bankrupt.

I think he's a lazy assed filmaker and wastes his own talent. He, like, Eli Roth make a couple of decent films, rest on their laurels and talk mad shit. Put up or shut up.

capecep, I agree and disagree. Clerks 2 didn't suck but it was only 'okay'. Kevin Smith has a lot of talent and could make some truly great films without selling out. As you said, he needs to put up or shut up.

Kevin Smith has made one really long movie. His humor is always the exact same, just different actors (sometimes). The man is rich as we all know, as stated early, produce it yourself, smith. If he is so determined to make the film, get it done, it's not like he doesn't have the resources, it would appear he has indeed become lazy.

I like all of Kevin Smith's movies, but lets face it, they are nothing groundbreaking... He needs to branch out an prove that is more than just a one-trick pony.

Kevin Smith is right up there with Cronenberg and Spielberg in my book (despite the vast genre differences). I hope the project gets done, but I foresee a lot of anger coming from right-wingers about the 'evil fundamentalist redneck' plot. I'm really looking forward to it, though (and you can't deny that the Clerks movies are some of the cleverest, wittiest, funniest films in history...)

Personally, I am glad to see this go down. The premise always pissed me off. He said he was inspired by the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, KS. That is one of the most despicable, bigoted organizations on the planet, and they deserve all spite and hatred sent their way. They are truly horrible people, and the only people in Kansas who disagree with that statement are the organization's fifty-some-odd members. So what does Kevin Smith do? He takes an extremist organization that is despised by nearly everyone, including other Kansans, and he attributes their stances to the whole state. F-you, Mr. Smith. Kansas may be a conservative state, but the kind of bigotry and extremism found in the Westboro Baptist Church is contained fairly exclusively in their walls. Hell, they aren't even conservatives. They're just hate-mongers. They have stated that their entire goal is to spread hatred for the US and the world.
