For those of you Guillermo del Toro purists out there, the first official casting came in this evening for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, a thriller for Miramax Films that was scripted by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins. Beyond the break you see who will star in the latest big budget Hollywood remake going into production this summer under the helm of Troy Nixey.

Katie HolmesKatie Holmes (Batman Begins) will star in "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," a thriller for Miramax Films that was scripted by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins, writes the Hollywood Reporter.

Del Toro is producing with Mark Johnson and the film will be directed by del Toro protege Troy Nixey.

Some interesting news is that the film will shoot this summer in Melbourne as a "Guillermo del Toro Presentation."

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is based on a 1973 ABC telepic about a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend and discovers they are sharing the house with devilish creatures.

Nixey, a comicbook artist, is making his feature directing debut. Del Toro sparked to "Latchkey's Lament," a Nixey-directed short that captured the tone del Toro wanted for "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark."

Del Toro and Johnson are also teamed with Gary Ungar to produce "Hater," an adaptation of the David Moody horror novel that will be directed at Universal by Juan Antonio Bayona ("The Orphanage").

Holmes most recently completed "The Extra Man," directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini.

Del Toro is busy readying "The Hobbit," which he's writing with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. That film shoots next year.

Yay for first comments. Katie Holmes, eh? Personally, I've never cared for her. She does the job though. I'm just confused as to what the hell this movie is about. I thought it was supposed to be based on that old Nickelodeon show. Wait. That's "Are You Afriad of the Dark". My bad. This movie doesn't sound very original at all. But hey, it's Guillermo del Toro. He's fucking brilliant. "The Orphanage" was gold.

I loved her before she became "Cruise", but she is still very likable. Hope this turns out good, will most likely be PG-13 though. Boo!!!

i thought she was alright in DISTURBING BEHAVIOR but (i know this sounds lame) the whole Tom Cruise/Scientology/"MEGA"celebrity thing just makes me ill. it's completely tainted her for me. i don't care to see ANYTHING she does now. and no offense to Guillermo but is he doing like 20,500 movies this year. it seems like every week he's either producing/directing/co-producing/executive producing/gaffer-ing/catering/lighting/etc/etc. SOMETHING!! LOL.

Your synopsis is a bit off --> a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend <-- I just watched this movie a couple weeks ago and there is no father, it's just a young couple moving into a new house. The wife ends up having a problem with the "little people" and nobody believes her when she tells people about them. Pretty decent flick for a TV movie.

I picked up a bootleg dvd of this movie at a comicon a couple years ago, and for those who haven't seen it ........ creepy as hell. Not like jump out and scare you , look ooooo gives you chills creepy. Now granted its a little cheesy because it was the 70's and it was made for TV, but this movie has potential to be the scariest remake to hit since The Ring.

i like kaite holmes, but i think her movie career, after batman begins has frankly sucked, and being with tom cruise at her age is just weird.i think it hurt her career more than anything.

I like Katie Holmes. The movie synopsis is wrong. There was no father. It was a couple. I guess that is the plot of the new movie? The movie was scary. It was more of the suspense that got you. The ending was really fucking sad and fucked up. It was a good movie but the monsters kept taking me out the feared element because they were so goofy looking. The need to remake it.
