New Swimmer Joins Aja's 'Piranha' Pool

Last night I was browsing through Netflix's instant view movies when I came across the 1995 version of Joe Dante's original Piranha, which I had forgotten all about. So Alexandre Aja's upcoming Piranha 3D is actually the 3rd version of the story. Family Guy and Max Payne fans (if there is such a thing for the latter) will be interested to know the 1995 one featured one of the first roles for Mila Kunis, when she was only 12 (i.e. not worth going back to ogle). Anyway, keeping with the theme of casting young upcoming starlets, Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr has signed on to the new film. Read after the break for more details on her character, other characters, and the brand new official synopsis from Dimension Films. The movie itself is still a long way off from its March 19, 2010 release...

Via EOnline:

Jessica Szohr"Szohr has signed on to play Kelly, a hot young townie caught up in the excitement of co-eds who have descended upon the area for spring break.

Previously announced cast for the Dimension Films project includes Elisabeth Shue as the local sheriff, Ving Rhames as one of her deputies and Adam Scott as a Navy diver sent in to help rescue the town.

Richard Dreyfuss will also be featured in a nod to his work in—what else?—Jaws."

And the synopsis:

Jaws... lots and lots of jaws. From acclaimed director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) comes the new action thriller PIRANHA 3D, in the latest eye-popping 3D technology. A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself.

Look, synopsis schynopis. As long as no one warns "You gotta be careful of the water, it creates reflections! And piranhas!!", I'll be happy.

Cool. She's not bad looking and is a decent actress. Am totally pumped for this flick!

Well, having Aja aboard certainly takes it out of the sad remake category. The man loves blood and gore, and the new Piranha should have PLENTY to be a competent remake.

I had no idea they did this in 95'. That had to have been crap. The first one was fun and campy in a "let's capitalize on JAWS" sort of way. I think this will be great. Aja is a great choice. Forget MIRRORS, Think HILLS Remake and HIGH TENSION. He will deliver a fun, gory 3D experience we have never seen before.

i think the 95 piranah was made for cable and had the boy who played christian in clueless and the punky brewster moon fry chick in it-it came and went quietly
