During an interview with IGN (watch it below, J.J. Abrams reveals that J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof — the two brains behind the ABC television series "Lost" — have been working on an adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel series The Dark Tower. “Damon Lindelof and I talked to Mr. King," Abrams explains. “We got the rights for ['Dark Tower'] as a film. Damon is obviously still on ‘Lost’ and we’ve been working on ‘Star Trek’ together. As soon as ‘Lost’ is done, hopefully we’ll begin tackling that.” You can find a bit more on this over at MTV or read on for the short clip. The Dark Tower is a series of seven books written by American author Stephen King between 1970 and 2004.
The man in black would approve. I freaking cant wait for this series. Lord of the Rings aint got nothing on this. He(abrams) has a got a long road to cover. Casting is key! I wanna know who they are thinking of for Roland.
My only question? How the hell are they gonna do this? I mean, The Dark Tower is friggin HUGE (I'm rereading them right now between bouts on Street Fighter IV and now the new Wolverine game), so does this mean they're gonna try to do it Harry Potter style with a new installment every year? Meh, any way they go, this could ROCK.
Meh. Does anyone else think JJ Abrams is over-rated, TV-time fluff? For that matter, The Dark Tower is pretty over-rated itself, so perhaps they'll go well together.
My hope for this is that he doesn't make films out of them. There is simply no way to do it right. What would be the best way to do it in my opinion, would be to just do one long television show on HBO or Showtime. We don't need 7 installments. I would just like to see the entire story done from beginning to end. The only way to do that would be a television series. It would probably last three or four seasons.
Once upon a time this was gonna be an HBO showm which would have been great. Same with Preacher, HBO show. This is too ambitious to do all 7 books, although there is a fair share of fat that cut easily be trimmed down to 5. The signing deal would have to be for all books to be made, otherwise you'd be left hanging.
Everything this guy does is rated PG-13 and there's no way in hell that any studio is going to back 7 R-rated epics. So if these do get made they will suck.
Abrams I think could fuck this up BUT I'm way too excited about even just the possibility of this to let that bring me down. Obviously they shouldnt try and condense the story into one bloody movie... I could possibly see the entire series done in a solid trilogy??
Eggman is on the right track. Each book could be a 10-12 episode season of hourly episodes to do The Dark Tower the justice it deserves. As a series of feature films too much would have to be omitted, and the turnaround between installments would be so long that Jake would age out and need to be replaced several times.
I'm a bit on the fence about this. JJ Abrams is a bit over-rated, but he can deliver. I think it is too much book for the big screen. I like the idea of the HBO, Showtime, Starz type series better. That would give it the room it needs to breathe, but at the same time I agree with tszilla the Jake character would get too old. A lot of dilemas here. I knew this would come at some point, but I guess it's time to wait and see. I hope it's good.
Movie or TV series just do it and do it right! Some darlings will be cut and I'll probley scream at the film, either way....hurry up!
And the Dark Tower is not over-rated, if anything its under-rated. Wish I knew more peeps in RL who read it, by cracky.
If david is writing with JJ this will be epic, kids can say JJ all they want but the guy is brilliant, david is brilliant and together they create some of the greatest media out there
