Russell Mulcahy is a busy chap, but has yet to really make an impact here on us horror fans. After delivering us the stunning, beautiful and badass Razorback from Australia, he has gone on to direct the disappointing Resident Evil: Extinction. Now the director is heading back to the indie route as he's not only working on his spin of Grimm (more details), but is also now developing a 3-D flick by the name of Bait. Read on for the skinny.
"In a sleepy coastal resort community, shoppers at an underground supermarket find themselves terrorized by a crazed bandit when the unimaginable occurs… A monstrous freak tsunami swallows the town. Now trapped inside a flooded supermarket with an armed maniac and rushing water threatening to entomb them all in a watery grave, the imprisoned band of survivors discover they’re not alone. The tsunami has brought some unwanted visitors from the depths. As the waters rise they must overcome not only the threat of drowning, but another threat, just as deadly and far more bloodthirsty… Packs of hungry tiger sharks."
This sitting duck thriller sounds very similar to a few other projects floating around from Chris Kentis' (Open Water) second deep-sea pic based on a true story Indianapolis to Xavier Gens' (Frontier(s)) cannibal island thriller Vanikoro. Click either title for more info.
Actually, I didn't think Resident Evil: Extinction was at all disappointing and even though it had nothing to do with any of the games, it was still much better than the second film. He seemed to have worked pretty well with the shitty script written by Paul Anderson and his direction and style overshadowed the terrible plot and dialogue. I'm excited for Bait as well.
Martin Weisz directed The Hills Have Eyes 2.
II don't know why you have to say stuff like ' he has gone on to direct two disappointing franchise sequels in The Hills Have Eyes II and Resident Evil: Extinction.
I liked Resident Evil Extinction I'm sure a lot of people did. His directios did overshadow the ludicris plot.
Looking forward to Bait
"There can be only one!" ... Mulcahy is responsible for "Highlander," so I'm forever grateful of him, but he has made quite a bit of crap. "Extinction" was pretty bad, but not because of it's direction (visually, it was stunning), but because of the absolutely horrid, illogical, insepid, mind-numbingly dumb ass script from Paul W.S. Anderson.
RE:E was aweful, but I'm willing to blame it on the script and not the direction, cause it had a few good shots in it. But it was one of the most retarded scripts I've seen on film.
I love shark films! I'm pumped. But this sounds ALOT like the plot for the dead sequel to Deep Blue Sea which would have been entitled Deep Red Sea. It would have been about a town being flooded too. :)
I've never even heard of Russell Mulcahy but this sounds pretty lame.
