A Long 'Road' to Get This New Release Date
Thursday, April 30, 2009

Dimension Films has finally given John Hillcoat's long-delayed adaptation of The Road a new release date - nearly a year after it was original slated to hit theaters. Starring Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Robert Duvall, Dimension will put the film in theaters on October 16 of this year, assuming the date sticks this time. The story centers on a man who embarks on a nightmarish road trip after a nuclear explosion in an attempt to transport his son to safety while fending off cannibals. wow that IS a long stretch. i'm VERY much looking forward to this. we'll see if it DOES stay in that slot. it's a dark, post-apocalyptic type movie (from what i've read) so it will fit (IMO) in the month of OCT.

since this is DIMENSION, i wish that they would release H2 around the Halloween season but at least we'll get to see H2 sooner and at least THE ROAD is getting a release (just in time for OSCARS).

I honestly doubt this has any Oscar potential.. I mean, it sounds like it MIGHT... and the book is AMAZING. Buuuut Dimension Films is a genre label... if the Weinstein brothers thought it had a shot at awards, they would probably release under The Weinstein Company banner... But hopefully it's good, none the less.

If it's as good as the book (and I'm a huge fan, 3x reader of it), then it being an Oscar contender is not that big of a stretch. Hillcoat is also a master of cinematography (see "The Proposition") and so I can definitely see him nominated if these glimpses are true tastes of how gorgeous this thing can look on the big screen.

Dimension pisses me off. Seems like they are always jerking things around...

If it was an Oscar contender, they would have released it last November. It'll be average at best. I'll bet it all comes down to the screenplay. jmacgrath and TheDeadMayTasteBad are right about the book. It's mind-blowingly good. It would take a FANTASTIC screenwriter to adapt McCarthy's work of fucking art. TV Writer Joe Penhall is NOT the guy. Just learn to love the book and avoid the movie, just like we all did with "The Beach" by Alex Garland.

I have VERY high hopes for this. All the reviews I've seen have said that it stays exactly with the book, which I am a huge fan of. I also think it will be a serious ocar contender, can't wait.

The one thing that might be a problem is the film coming out so long after the book peaked in reader popularity. Last year the book was all over the place - here in NYC you'd see a ton of people on the streets / subway reading the book. 1 1/2 years later? wow, tough to say if that "oh, there's now a movie...gotta see it!" will still be strong.
