Multiple Offers to Bring 'Spawn' Back to the Big Screen?

The boys over at IESB have been on scoop fire lately as today they've got a hot little blurb from Spawn creator Todd McFarlane about the potential much needed remake that's been in talks for quite some time now. "Todd McFarlane tells us he has five offers on the table to do a new Spawn film. From big special effects studio budgets to a smaller indie budgets that he hopes to be able to write and direct himself." For those of you who aren't familiar with the franchise, it was one of the first Image comic books released when the company launched in 1992 and at the time was the all-time highest selling comic. It featured an African American CIA agent killed by his own boss for witnessing his corruption, Al Simmons was sent to hell. To see his wife one more time, he made a deal with the devil Malebolgia to become an undead "hellspawn".

John Waters said in an interview that "they should only be allowed to remake bad films". This being said: Go for it!

I wonder if New Line still has any rights over film adaptations for Spawn? If they do, hopefully they do it justice this time round.

Man, I used to be a huge Spawn comic fan as a kid. That dreadful film starring Martin Sheen by the same name is responsible for one of the worst theater-going experiences of my life.

Long needed. Although I have to give John Leguizamo props, he turned in a good clown performance. And that was one of Manson's best songs. Ah, the 90's....

i mean, why remake it when you can just do a sequel i dont think anything is wrong with the original. and i agree with THOMMY RAZOR all day long!

I hope its a hard R like it should be and they make it real dark. I mean real dark scary as hell it should be the comic book movie thats not a comic book movie.

i agree with sequel but whatever

Yes, reboot this mother already. And don't sanitize it (again) with a PG-13. Just go all out and make the ultimate Spawn movie - what we all wanted it in the first place.

I'm all for this! I can't wait to see Spawn back on the big screen!

oh fuck yes!! (as long as its rated R)

Gargus

Why? They would be better off trying another series type animated thing on hbo or whatnot, only with better support this time. A movie like this rated R or rated G has a incredibly potential rate for being horrible, not to mention in this day and age its gonna be full of god awfull CG effects.

Hell fucking yeah! A new Spawn movie is NEEDED. An awesome story like that has so much potential on the big screen, I can't believe how badly they fucked it up the last time, no wonder there haven't been any movies since. With today's technology, and McFarlane himself writing and producing, this movie could be pretty kick ass, and FINALLY do respect to the comic. It shouldn't be a remake or a sequel, that godawful abomination of a movie has no business being revisited, whether it's through a retelling or a continuation of the story...they need to start from scratch!

Putting all that trash I said about the movie aside, you're right Razor, John Leguizamo was awesome as the clown, that was the only good part of the movie, and "The Long Hard Road out of Hell" is one of Manson's best songs ever.

The original started great and then fell flat by the third act, I really hope they can do a good film all around this time, as long as they focus on the story and the character and not so much on the "oooooh, look at the expensive cgi cape" (granted it looked great, but still....)

I personally think that Spawn should be remade with two conditions kept in mind. First, Todd McFarlane is allowed to write the script for the movie or he can have somebody he feels comfortable writing the script for him. There are to many adaption movies, in my opinion, where the original writer should have stepped in and said "what the fuck are y'all doing?!?!" Two, that this movie should definatly be darker than the original. I still don't know why the first was rated PG-13 or how somebody could make it PG-13. That's like trying to make Hostel into a Pixar film to me. It just can't be done without hurting the material. Spawn is meant to be dark and bloody. Hell if you've ever seen the comic you know that the first five pages are nothing but blood and violence, trust me I have a collector's edition. I just thank God fot the HBO Spawn series. At least that did it some justice. This is one of the few movies out there that I say yes this deserves to be remade. And not to be rude Gargus, but no matter what, there will be A LOT of CG in this film, cause there are somethings props can't do. But I am with you, I do hope Todd doesn't go crazy with the CG effects. And I also wish Todd and Clive Barker would hurry up with a Tortured Souls movie god damn it (just saying!).

Just wondering, DeathMagick, is there an actual story for Tortured Souls or do they just have the action figures?

just make it a hard R rating like it should be and I will be there although it is going to be hard to surpass john's portrayal of the clown

This would be epic. Go the big budget!

There is a story to Tortured Souls, Lost Boy. I loved the first Spawn and it sucked, so I would love another one.

i would watch a remake. it would have to be miles better than the original which i found to be pretty painful to watch.
