It has been almost exactly one year since Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo's bloody French horror film Inside finally hit DVD from Dimension Extreme. It has also been about that long since the directors walked off the Hellraiser reboot being developed by the Weinstein bros. This afternoon, Twitch Film brings us some of the best news this year as they've learned of the French duos next project, Livid, which is set in a small town on the Irish coast. Read on for a synopsis and some Cannes sales art!
It’s young Lucy’s first day as a trainee in-house caregiver. She visits Mrs Jessel, an old woman who lies in cerebral coma, by herself, in her large desolate house. Learning by accident that Mrs Jessel, a former dance teacher of repute, supposedly possesses a treasure somewhere in the house, Lucy and friends William and Ben decide to search the house in the hope of finding it.
At night, they get into the house, which reveals itself to be increasingly peculiar. Their hunt for Mrs Jessel’s treasure leads them into a horrifying supernatural series of events that will change Lucy forever…
This will be the English language debut for the duo and is set to roll later in 2009.
"The house reveals itself to be increasingly peculiar" -- Sounds potentially interesting and the poster's pretty good (although it's going to draw obvious comparisons with the one for 'Silence of the Lambs').
Eh . . . I really hoped they'd make another film as great as Inside. And what made Inside great was that it was realistic and completely serious; which is something you rarely see in horror films lately (or ever).
I agree with Jacques...horror isnt serious anymore. Most of the stuff now has top 40 soundtracks for all the kids and or has some kind of gimmicky theme that just doesnt hold the movie together. Inside was plain and simple and down to the point serious. Livid sounds interestins but like Barfneck said...im not one for supernatural stuff. The poster is kind of different in an abstract sort of way. I'll still see it hoping for something to Inside.
INSIDE was one of the best horror films in years. It was a crushing disappointment that they walked off the Halloween 2 gig, because that was the closest slasher atmosphere to Carpenter's original that I've seen.
VIVID sounds simple, but it's in the execution that'll score. Hopefully.
count me in! INSIDE is AWESOME! and i can't wait to see what these guys have in store for us!
i agree w/ Tigerbaby, i was REALLY bummed when it was announced they weren't taking the helm of H2. and i FULLY agree that INSIDE through much of it reminded me (IN AN AWESOME WAY) of HALLOWEEN.
Right you are, djblack. INSIDE had that same minimalist atmosphere and feeling of dread that the original Halloween had. Let's hope these boys aren't one trick ponys and come up with a stellar encore. AMAZING poster too!
Jacques, were we watching the same movie? Inside was "realistic and completely serious?" The Inside that I saw (and loved) was over the top outrageous and manically silly.
well it DEFINITELY wasn't like (no offense meant) a FRIDAY the 13th movie or a NIGHTMARE on ELM st. movie. so yeah, in that respect it's realistic (IMO).
@inksb: Lets see; big spooky place of residence? Check. Hidden treasure rumored to be inside spooky place of residence? Check. A small group of individuals go to search out and uncover hidden treasure? Check. The house ends up having a lot of peculiar and supernatural stuff going on inside? Check. Sounds a lot like "The People Under the Stairs" to me... especially since I just go through watching it for the first time not two weeks ago and it's still fresh on my mind. I'm not saying this won't be good (loved and own "Inside"), but I just noted quite a few simularities between the two films (based on the plot discription). What's so massively different about the two plots (based on the details that we know) that makes you think they aren't imular even in the slightest?
if this DOES end up kinda like PEOPLE UNDER..i hope it's done (and i'm sure it WILL be) really well.
no offense to fans of PEOPLE but that movie is (IMO) so bad.
djblack, like you said, I don't think we have to worry. I mean, these guys appear to be geniuses of the genre! I was simply making an observation. A filmmaker will determine the tone, mood, and all around presentation of a movie- and Maury/Bustillo are very different filmmakers than Craven.
Does sound like People Under the Stairs, not a bad thing though. Stoked for that remake.
I'm stoked for anything this duo directs until they dissapoint me..
I need to see Inside again, definitely a buyer.
