Bloody-Disgusting dropped by the set of THE HOLE this week to speak with iconic director Joe Dante (GREMLINS, THE HOWLING) and check out the production. We’ll have a full report from the set and an extensive interview with Dante in the coming weeks, while right now you can read the latest on a possible Gremlins 3 and the forthcoming Gremlins Blu-rays!
During our chat, we couldn’t resist turning the conversation to GREMLINS, although Dante was pretty resolute that he won’t be involved in a third film. "They did that once, they won’t do it again," Dante told BD, laughing. "They made that mistake once. Its a moot point, they won’t be coming to me." (Laughs) "I can tell you that for a fact."
When asked to elaborate, Dante only grinned, saying, "I don’t have to. See Looney Tunes: Back in Action and I think that will explain it. That was not a pleasant experience."
Still, Dante believes GREMLINS 3 will happen one of these days, whether he’s involved or not. "I find it hard to believe that they won’t make a GREMLINS 3 because they’re remaking ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING. I mean, they’re gonna remake everything."
Dante is involved in the current Blu-ray remasters of GREMLINS and GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH and says Amblin is making a diligent effort to see they are done justice. "One thing about Amblin is that they are extremely filmmaker-friendly," says Dante. "When your movie is put out on any sort of video system, they bring you in and you check it out, they get your opinion. They color correct it, they run things for you. They are very, very good about that. We’ve been involved quite a lot."
The Blu-ray discs will likely feature the same material from the DVD special editions, although Dante is hoping to include a popular YouTube fan film. "I think its the same edition. I did two commentaries for GREMLINS 1. I don’t have any more commentary. I’ve been trying to get this GREMLINS short done by the guy in Belgium, which he did in his basement. He built his own Gremlins and shot them on green screen going into other Warner Bros. movies. This is on YouTube. It’s really clever, they guy is really talented. I’ve been trying to get Warner’s to put this thing as an extra on the disc, but I think it may be complicated by the fact that one scene is from the movie Indiana Jones, which they don’t own. And that may be what’s killing the deal. I really think this guy’s talented and people [should] discover him, because he should do GREMLINS 3."
The Blu-Ray version of GREMLINS has been temporarily delayed, but hopefully that will mean a better version at the end of the day. "I’ve seen the transfer," says Dante. "We did them over. In fact, I think GREMLINS 1 was supposed to come out this summer because it’s the 25th anniversary, but they didn’t make the date because they said, ‘We can do better than this, we can make it look better,’ and its worth making it look better, so they’re still working on it."
Watch this spot for our THE HOLE set report and interviews soon!

Why can't the director of the Gremlins fan film not edit out he Indiana Jones sequence so he can get the clip on the DVD. I'm sure he would do it in an instant I'm going to contact him now. |
When my brother showed me that short we were both saying he seemed like the obvious choice for the man behind Gremlins 3. It would be amazing and it would make a huge amount of money - I get confused when studios ignore such brilliant chances to please everyone and make a shed-load of money in the process... |
I love Joe Dante movies. He's one of the few directors who's style is so distinct in anything he does. Hell, I could even tell which Twilight Zone Ep was his from the 80's. I used to not like 'Gremlins 2' but grew to appreciate it more when I realized it was a big "fuck you" to the studio and a jumble-fuck of off-the-wall ideas mashed into one film. I can't wait for these Blu-Rays. |
I hope Dante redoes the Hulk Hogan / John Wayne joke sequence for the Bluray Disc release. It would be cool to see a "digital" version of the "celluloid / VCR" joke! |
Watch the fan film. If a FAN can make something that good by himself at home, then why can't studios? Oh yeah, until they can guarantee a $300,000,000 return through advertising and marketing it isn't worth it to them to appease fans of the first two film. Watch Michael Bay pick this up and get Uwe Boll to direct. Now THAT is a Nightmare and truly horrifying. |
Everyone should just stop anticipating a third entry, and just prepare for the inevitable reboot. Dante's intent behind "The New Batch" was to end the franchise anyway, so after two decades, a remake (revision, reboot, rehash, whatever the hell you wanna call it) is really the only foreseeable option. And if the studio were to actually look for input from the fanbase, then they'd know the movie we're really hankering for: Gremlins vs. Critters. |
I am glad that Dante did not like the "Looney Tunes" film bcause I despised it. I could not believe he was responsible for it, but if the studio intervened (as is common in the business) then it explains everything. |
Im glad he doesnt doing a gremlins 3, 2 was enough just leave it at that. Besides gremlins is a product from a time in cinema thats long gone, the feel and style of that movie era can not be replicated. If it was done today it would be safe, stupid, and full of cg gremlins. More directors should follow his lead on not reviving old shit they did when it doesnt need to be. |
Id like to see Gremlins 3. I love the first 2! |
"If it was done today it would be safe, stupid, and full of cg gremlins."
Agreed Gargus. 'Gremlins' is sort of like 'Evil Dead' or 'ReAnimator'. The dated asthetics and practical effects are a huge part of their charm. Pretty difficult to recapture that in 2009. I'm always up for new shit, but I can picture what a new 'Gremlins' movie would probably look like, and I don't like what I see. |
please NO GREMLINS REMAKE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
and the sad thing is if their remaking predator im sure this isnt far away
:( :( |
I'm down for anything Gremlins, with or without Joe Dante. Cool guy and all, but I'd like a fix. Just no CGI Gremlins! Bleh.
Oh, and I've always wanted to see what happens to Gizmo if he ate after midnight. Or if there are any other surviving Mogwai in the world. Be cool if they explored either of those in a sequel. |
Droogie13- id rather see Gremlins v/s GhoulieS |
If a third movie is inevitable, I would like to see a prequel in ancient China, with Gremlins and samurais! Maybe they can do it as a prologue to a third sequel, explaining something new about Gremlins (or his discovery). Remake, reboot or sequel, hope they make it without CGI Gremlins! |
Both Gremlins films were awesome! The second one got a little out of control, but it still had it's charm, plus some of THE coolest creatures from Hollywood. (Bat and Spider gremlins? AWESOME!)
I'm all for a third, but I hope they do something new storywise. Maybe take place on some kind of expedition, where some scientists find the native home of the Mogwai? Sort of a lost environment like those being discovered these days with new species. I imagine the Mogwai wouldn't be the only new critters to be seen... |
Gremlins. Love em'. what more is there to say?. :D |
Hmm, first he says Gremlins 3, then in the next breath he says 'I mean, they’re gonna remake everything.' So is it a sequel or a remake? It would be cool to visit all the characters twenty years later but I can't be doing with yet another remake! |
I was completely scared of Gremlins when I was a child. My nightmares were dominated by gremlins, and even going back now, I see it was the dark atmosphere created in the first film that held the key to its creepyness. Another gremlins set at christmas with that erie atmosphere like the first I would love to see again. While I love the new batch for what it is, I would trade it any day for another film that could fill children with the nightmares I now look fondly on, and somehow I think a film in line with the new batch or with modern cgi's won't do it. |
GIVE ME GREMLINS 3 ALREADY DAMMIT! |
i agree with richbeast about the first one actually being scarey at times-if it is a remake id like to see them play it serious and make it more of a horror flick you could still have gizmo but as a realistic chenchilla type creature rather than a plush toy. and yes keep the dark xmas setting.and maybe kill corey feldman in a cameo right away! |
that would be cool to see another one. i stlll have my gizmo doll that makes noises when u shake it. i dont want a stupid remake. bring on giz!!!! |
