Ridley Scott Toying With Return to 'Alien' Franchise?

Some pretty huge news comes in from the Wolverine premiere in Tempe, Arizona as Fox Co-chairman Tom Rothman talked with IESB about a potential prequel to Alien, one of my all-time favorite horror films. "There's been some talk," he tells the website. "Ridley Scott, Ridley is right now working on Robin Hood, but I think he's toying with the idea and that would be great for us. I mean, it's always been a matter of, really, if you can get the originator to do it that would be the greatest thing, so I've got my fingers crossed, all of them." We'll cross our toes too - what better way to continue the franchise than to take it away from Paul W.S. Anderson, the ruiner of all things good, and give it back to the master?

They just had to go and ruin the potentially-amazing-news-of-a-lifetime with the dreaded word "prequel", didn't they?

A prequel's not so bad.. I mean "Reboot" is a much worse word and I highly doubt Ridley Scott would bother if he had to do a sequel to Alien Resurrection.

I may be alone in this, but I'm not a huge fan of the original Alien. For me, Aliens is where it's at and always has been. However, I do acknowledge that without Alien, there would be no Aliens, so at least there's that. What worries me is that now that they're already making a remake of Predator (which out of all the current plans for remakes goes to number one on my list of films that really don't need to be remade, simply because...what's the point?), isn't anyone else worried that they're going to move right on to Alien afterwards? I really don't want to see a "re-imagining" of what a Predator or an Alien is supposed to look like. They're already pretty much perfect the way they are.

i want 2 see an alien remake imagine how scary the alien could look like and imagine how intense it would be

Reboot, prequel, sequel? It's all good news as long as Ridley's involved. David Fincher made a great sequel with Alien 3, but that was it. Cameron's film is overrated. Alien Resurrection is borderline terrible. The AVP movies are atrocious. Ridley would seem to be the only good choice for the franchise to continue. I hope this happens.

It's always good to know when Paul W.S. Anderson isn't doing something.

Yeah, 'case it's not like the Strause bros. did anything to ruin the franchise.

"A prequel's not so bad.." -- Hmm, it just gives me visions of a storyline in which the origins of the xenomorphs is finally explained, ending with a chestburster ripping itself free from that space jockey. These things are often terrible because they take away the mystery. In other words, my Clone Wars are far, far better than George Lucas's Clone Wars could ever hope to be.

Anthing that can erase the pain that is AVP and AVPR is fine by me and with Ridley on board, i'm in.

I share Boilersuit'a concerns about this, as 'Alien' is one of my all-time favorites. But after some very less-than-stellar sequels and AVP spin-offs, the potential return of Ridley Scott to the 'Alien' franchise is REALLY good news. Massive! Just don't mess around with Giger's design.

Awesome! Love all of the Alien and Alien vs. Predator movies. This will kick ass if it happens.

I wonder if Ridley would bring Russell Crowe into the mix.....that would be cool.

Awesome idea to bring Ridley back. But a prequel? I dont know about that. Can they even show Aliens in that movie when they were first encountered in "Alien"?

If this comes true I'll be a very happy person.

I think if Ridley Scott sets it on the Space Jockey planet and explain what the hell that creature was and stuff! I would be happy!

Ridley Scott has been interested with a prequel idea for a while now. I've seen interviews with him saying that he's interested years ago. Still though, i'd be pumped for this

Jason: They were first 'reported' in the original, but not necessarily first encountered. I think the prequel idea is the way to go with this (as opposed to a remake or Alien 5) especially if Scott's involved.

Actually, if you count the AVP movies (I don't) the Aliens were first encountered there, or uh... here in our present/near future.

Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors and 'Alien' is one of the greatest (I would even say it is the best) sci-fi/horror films ever. To have him back on an 'Alien' project would be very cool. He puts a lot of effort into his film making and I think it would be a great project.

There have been interviews for a long time where he has said or, like this, where SOMEONE HAS SAID FOR HIM (practically any interview with Sig. Weaver), that he might be interested in an another Alien, but nothing has been come of it yet, and I see no reason to think it will now. And I dread the idea of a prequel. I want my mystery intact. I think I would actually go on and have more AVP films than have Ridly come in and give us the Aliens equiv. of Indiana Jones 4.

do it, alien is tarnished right now, that would be something cool giving back the credibility of what was once a great thing and idea

No big shock here. I don't think any classic movie right now is untouchable in Hollywood. If Ridley is involved, I think a prequel makes more sense or a remake of the original. NO ALIEN 5!!! Just my opinion. JAWS has got to be being considered by some studio. It seems like a no brainer for a remake.

how many times has he said this now???

As long as there is no fucking Ripley in it, I'll see it. The bitch died in Alien3. End of story for Sigourney Weaver, but a perfect opportunity to basically restart the franchise from a fresh start. Then they had to bring her back back from the dead for 4. I guess it's fitting since she did die in the stomach churning "Jesus Christ Pose" in 4. Still though, just keep her dead and move on. Let's go back to what the movies were all about: not Ripley, but ALIENS.
