Verbinski's 'Bioshock' Hits Troubled Waters

Literally this very morning I busted out my copy of Bioshock and restarted my venture into the underwater city of Rapture, one of the most mystical, beautiful... and insanely terrifying cities on the planet. With the sequel on its way to game systems this year, and director Gore Verbinski passing on a fourth Pirates film to fast track the live-action feature film adaptation, I couldn't wait a second longer to dive make into that universe. Too bad Verbinski and Universal can't figure their sh*t out and Uni has pulled the drain on the project... for now. Read on for the skinny.

Via Variety:

Bioshock Rapture"Universal Pictures has put the brakes on "Bioshock," the Gore Verbinski-directed live action adaptation of the bestselling Take-Two Interactive vidgame. The picture was in pre-production, but the studio has halted that effort--and let some production staff go--as Universal and Verbinski figure out a way to make the film at a more reasonable budget.

Sources said that the John Logan-scripted picture was gearing up to shoot in Los Angeles, but that changed when the budget rose to the vicinity of $160 million. U and Verbinski are looking at alternatives like shooting in London as a way to pare costs. The plotline takes place in the underwater city Rapture, where a pilot crash-lands near a secret entrance and becomes involved in a power struggle.

"We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit," Verbinski said. "We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern."

Verbinski and sources at the studio say they are determined to make the pic. Indeed, Verbinski (who has also been directing the Paramount animated film "Rango" with Johnny Depp) bowed out of directing a fourth installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" so that he could direct "Bioshock" and produce under his Blind Wink banner.

Studio sources said that the budget simply became untenable, but U sources said this is no different than when the studio delayed the start of the untitled Robin Hood pic that Ridley Scott is now directing with Russell Crowe starring. U is making that picture for $130 million, a much lower budget that in its first incarnation. For a number of reasons that included the need for extra script work, that picture temporarily halted, a move which enabled Crowe to star in "State of Play" when Brad Pitt fell out.

All parties vow that "Bioshock" will not become another "Halo," the live action adaptation of the Microsoft game that was going to be turned into a film by U and Fox until both studios got cold feet and cancelled the deal over budget fears.

Universal acquired "Bioshock" in a multi-million dollar deal against gross points with Take-Two (Daily Variety, May 8).

To be honest with you. 160 million is ridonkyless! I'm sure if they move to London they could probably shoot on 70 million. Or even in Prague for 45 million. I'm guessing. Bioshock isn't a family friendly story like Pirates of the Caribbean. I think this film would make around 50 mill domestic and 100 mil worldwide. Like just guessing all of that when comparing it o similar material. blah that's my silly statement of tonight!

thats true Sean, but we got to remember that box office is only one part of the equation, most films make their money in DVD/Blu-ray sales.Still think this could pull a good 70+mil and keep it a solid PG-13 due to how popular this game is.

Sean 160 mil would probably go toward development of making the big daddy suit and making the world of rapture world where you would see a whale pass by the outside view glass

Man! This movie would have been so tight! Well I guess all we can do now is just keep our fingers crossed.

I agree I would love to see it shot with that big scope of detail! On the landscapes effects and characters but, still Verbinski has talent. I'm sure he'll still deliver.

God I want this to happen so bad!!! This would make a badass movie!!!

Is the PG-13 thing confirmed? Really this is unmakeable for pg-13 rating. They would have to excise the deranged plastic surgeon completely, due to the necessity it requires for gore and the graphic mutilations of splicers it calls for. Not to mention toning down the graphic nature of the 'artists' human works. It just seems like there is a lot to Rapture that would have to be removed to make this a PG-13 film and I just don't think it's possible. I'm hoping they WILL find a way to make it on a reduced budget and can that way afford to take the hit of an R-rating... which seems stupid even to mention because really aren't the older adolescent gamers this films key demographic?

It's bullshit they can't find a way to cut costs without moving the production over seas! How about they hire new or lesser known talent instead of huge Hollywood stars with their bloated paychecks? Because you KNOW it will get at least one or two. Hollywood budgets are so overblown it makes me sick. There are so many people here in the States who could really use the work these days, yet to pad their own already fat wallets, Universal wants to take it over seas to save their money. LAME! This shit is just as bad as big corporations who move all their factories and call centers over seas.

Amen to that, ultrazilla2000.

It's a sign. Stop making video games into movies. It never works. Ever. Somewhere in the process a fucking retard fucks some shit up cause they're not a gamer. This would be shitty t'were it made. Luckily they're putting it on halt. Maybe they actually want to make it good.

DekkerHead07

That's why the budget is so big, Skratchy, because it seems Verbinski want's to make this as much like the game and feel like the game as much as possible. I believe they can still keep the scope and epic feeling while cutting down the budget somewhat...$120m sounds pretty reasonable for such an epic game to make into a movie, don't you think?

if they make it PG-13 thats bullshit. why do they keep turning all these storylines that have so much potential to use the hard R rating and make them PG-13? I understand that they think that they will sell more money because family's can take there small ones, but really? i went and saw Last House On The Left 09' and there was plenty of Parents with there little ones sitting right next to them. So why take something that us horror fanatic's enjoy and tune it down to the pussy PG-13 level? I for one enjoy blood, swearing and nudity. Is that so wrong?

They should make a "Soldier of Fortune" movie. Now THAT would rock!

6:40pm, April 25, 2009

sorry but you know if they make this it will suck just like all other video game movies....because they will throw in some random ass story that never even happened in the game just like they did with Doom

160 million is too much even though since most of it takes place underwater it's gonna be expensive. $100 million sounds bout' right. As an aside...isn't it funny how people can talk about hundreds of millions of dollars to make a movie yet there are children starving all over the world & there doesn't seem to be any money for them?? Just wondering....

Blood-Sicles
11:56pm, April 25, 2009

Ugh, I was just playing this this morning also... Yeah, the budget sounds a little big, but I'd love to see this one on the big screen as well as Dead Space. These games would make great adaptions because they are much more serious games and are way less likely to be adapted into cheesy B movies like most game adaptions...

Good. Bioshock was a fantastical bore and a shitty game translates into a shitty movie. I don't understand how so many people love this game. Even if i didn;t hate the game, it would never work as a movie. A guy with a magic hand and a gun? This would follow the fate of resident evil, but would be childish.

I'm sorry to say, but some people are plain retarded. This was the best 1st person shooter of 2008 hands down and would be perfect for a movie!! If your a real game player you know what it is, a great story set in a underwater city of corruption and greed!?! And not to mention the experiments that turn men into psycho murderers and little girls into monster like creatures that collect the life from the recently deceased who by the way have giant bodyguards who can kill anything that moves!! Its more than a guy with a magic hand and a gun, its a story of deceit, lies and revenge......all in all its a beautiful game and adventure that deserves to be made into a movie. So please work everything so you guys can get this project going, ya just about every video game movie has been garbage but I think they can do this one right!!!

Kaname Tousen
11:35pm, April 27, 2009

Gears of War okay stomp that guy chain saw him. Bioshock set that guy ON FIRE then when he jumps into the water shock him and then use telekensis to throw a blade at another guy and freeze him then smash him with a wrench.....Winner BIOSHOCK! anyway to get the full effects of plasmids and some of the crazier enemies 160 mil sounds right and I swear if there is a fully CG big daddy I'm going to be more pissed off then dead puppy and white socks for Christmas. And before you ask who you would get in the suits, get Kane Hoddler and the other guys who did Leather face and Jason as well as the new Micheal
