I really dunno about the unmasked Michael. Heck, I still don't know how I feel about Zombie's take on masked Michael. To me, what made Michael scary in the original was the visual simplicity. Average height, normal build, wearing a simple white mask that not only seemed not at all out of place on Halloween night, but that acted like a clean slate... there was no emotion to it, no feeling. It was sterile. When we finally see Michael's face in the finale of the original film, it too is pretty much the same. He's just a regularly looking guy, but nearly devoid of emotion.
In the Zombie films, Michael is now an incredibly large, long haired (and now long bearded) guy, and the mask, while still frightening, I think was overcomplicated. The rot and tears in it... it worked, but not in the same way. For me, Zombie's changed Michael from a very simple, emotionless guy who could easily disappear into the celebrating suburbs on Halloween, to a guy who'd stand out pretty dang badly and who looks... well, like a homeless version of Rob Zombie.
I will say though, despite my not really liking Zombie's ideas about the character, and thinking Tyler Mane is just a tad too big for the character, I do have to admit Mane did a decent job with what he had in the first movie. His body language was rather menacing, and at times he did remind me of the classic Myers. If they'd cut the hair, and had a director more suited for the property in charge, I think I actually would've liked his Myers quite a lot.
