'The Countess' Trailer Tells Bathory's True Story

If you can handle the word "drama" in with your horror, I think you might get behind Julie Delpy's period piece The Countess, which tells the true story of the legendary Elizabeth Bathory, who inspired many a vampire myth with sadistic rituals that included bathing in the blood of virgins. Beyond the break you can check out the first trailer that looks pretty interesting as it goes from romantic to haunting (I think the shot of her at the fireplace at the end says it all), along with a long synopsis.

The true story of Countess Bathory born in 1560. At the age of 14, she married a powerful warlord, 10 years her senior. Although their relationship became cold and distant she bore him four children. While he was away fighting wars, she kept up their estate with the help of her confidant, the witch Anna Darvulia, becoming increasingly powerful. She was feared, admired and loathed by many even the King had to obey her wishes. After her husband died, she met a handsome young man. They fell passionately in love. However, she was desperately concerned that she was not young enough to keep him. For 12 years, she waited for his return and in mad desperation, began to bathe in the blood of virgins, convinced that it would provide her with eternal youth and beauty, setting in motion the chain of bloody and treacherous events that led to her demise.

In case it gets pulled, it's also over at BDTV:

Ok... Please tell me this will be given at least a limited release in the theater. I've been waiting for a good Bathory film and this looks fantastic.

For those of you who don't know; the real Countess Bathory killed or had killed by her other servants several of her maids so she could bath in their blood. There have been other films that tried to tackle this story but ultimately wimped out and made several changes to tone it down. Hopefully this film has got the balls to do it and the brains to make it good. The real Bathory was one evil be-otch!!!!

I hope this is a faithful representation of the Bathory tale; I adored a radio adaptation for "Nightfall", entitled "The Blood Countess"! It featured a dummy made in the likeness of a human, whom Lady Bathory forced one of her maids to hug. At that time, I switch was flipped, and knives were pushed out of the wooden creature and into the servant's breasts and vagina. Then the Countess collected the blood in bowls for her bath... Here's hoping such violence is included!

I was wondering if they would ever do a movie about her story. It seems very interesting...

I am so glad that they are doing a semi true telling of the history of Elizabeth Bathory. I have been fascinated with her history from childhood and I was sickened with the hack job Stay Alive did with the legend.

Interesting. Looks more drama than horror though, but if it is a good film I won't mind.

Even if the movie never makes it to the US, there's a new book out about her called Memoir of a Countess. Not for the weak at heart. I hope they at least release a DVD in the US -- there have been a lot of god European reviews on the movie.

It looks extremely typical. Anna Friel's Romainian language version is decent, simply called "Bathory". This looks more like a gothic romance.

I want to see see the Romanian one. I think these are two different films rigth? I remember the trailer being different. Anyway, doesnt look like a horror film as much as a slooowwww love story. Still, I LOVE costume dramas, so for that reason alone I can NOT wait. Marie Antoinette is almost above DeadAlive as my fav film of all time now...

The took the story of a 16th century aristocrat serial killer and turned it into a love story? I'm not sure how how "true" this story really is. If anything the moral of this story should be just how greedy and powerful European artiocrats were. They could do want ever they wanted, to whom ever they wanted.

good god, julie delphi was so beautifull in an American Werewolf in Paris. though I hardly recognised her is this. but I guess her true beauty will be revealed after her 'bloodbath'.

"Stay Alive" was probably more in line with Madame Delphine Lalaurie... http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/notorious_m urders/women/women_killers2/1.html

Looks slow as hell, but i'm hoping this'll be a good representation. I'll check it out tho. I did enjoy Stay Alive, but i went in w/an open mind. It was fun, that's about it.
