B-D reader 'kokaine' sent us a link to Paperstreet Films' official website where they have a long synopsis and teaser art for their forthcoming production of My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?, which is to be directed by Werner Herzog from his own screenplay co-written by Herbert Golder. The film stars Michael Shannon (Bug), Willem Dafoe (American Psycho), Chloe Sevigny (American Psycho, Zodiac), Brad Dourif (Child's Play), Michael Pena, Bill Cobbs, Grace Zabriskie and Udo Kier (Suspiria), read on for the new info.
Based on a harrowing true story…
The film opens as officers arrive at the scene –a typical middle-class neighborhood in San Diego. The suspect has barricaded himself inside a home and appears to have taken hostages.
Two friends he had urgently telephoned earlier that morning arrive, but too late. As they and their neighbors try to come to grips with what has happened, they tell their stories to the detective in charge of the crime scene.
In a series of flashbacks, the bizarre story of Brad Macallam begins to emerge. After an ill-fated white-water kayaking trip in a distant land, Brad finds readjustment to suburban life increasingly difficult. As his disaffection grows and his relations with those around him become strained, he glimpses a world more vivid and strangely frightening than others can see. The detectives try to penetrate the mystery of his story, but the questions only multiply.
Brad’s unfolding personal and family drama leads to an obsession with the ancient play, finally driving him to murder.
Good God THIS SOUNDS FANTASTIC!!!! Michael Shannon is one of the most underrated talents working in film today. His roles in Shotgun Stories and Bug were jaw dropping. I saw him perform in Friedkin's stage production of Bug and he simply blew me away. He is one of the most intense actors I have seen in the last 20 years. The fact that he is just the tip of the iceberg in what sounds like the best gathering of talent the horror genre has gotten in quite a while only adds fuel to the fire. I can't wait to see what this amazing group of talented individuals are going to bring us. Plus, it cannot go unmentioned that they will be working under the brilliant and infamous Werner Herzog!!! This gives me faith that this film will not only meet, but blast far beyond my greatest expectations. This sounds like it could well be the next great thriller/horror film to come to the big screen. In an industry that is awash with crappy remakes and useless gore this could be the cerebral triumph many of us have been hoping would signal a return to truly great horror. PLEASE KEEP US UPDATED!!!!!
I can't help but wonder...I remember reading an interview or something with Brad Dourif when The Wild Blue Yonder was released. He mentioned that Werner Herzog wanted to make a movie where the police are trying to get this guy to free some hostages, and when they finally convince him to, it turns out the hostages are just a bunch of flamingos. Sure this movie sounds very dark and disturbing, but is it not possible this could be that film? With Herzog, you never know....
