Cropsey was indeed the name we locals had for the bogeyman in the woods. He was rumored to live right near the Boy Scouts' Pouch Camp. If you were a grade-schooler in the early 80s, then you either teased other kids or were the teased one with the legend of Cropsey.
It's possible "The Burning" took the name of Cropsey from the children who taunted each other about the crazy evil man who lived in the woods, but it's also possible that some careless parents spoke of the movie character by name and we kids blended the movie story with the actual legend.
Nonetheless, by 1987 we kids learned there was a real live Cropsey, and a true terror hit us all the community. Just like the legend, he lived in hiding in the woods, and just like the legend, he stole kids away and murdered them.
This is a documentary; I know of the extensive interviewing and filming that took place - some of it many years ago.
It will be chilling to see.
