If you click on over to BDTV you can get your very, very first look at Cropsey, a new doc by Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio that asks "What if your urban legend were true?" Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival (April 22-May 3), Urban legends—we either dismiss them or accept that they have some grain of truth. Directors Zeman and Brancaccio attempt to uncover one such urban myth as they investigate five missing children and the real-life boogeyman linked to their disappearance in Staten Island during their youth. Will this terrifying journey resolve what has haunted them since childhood?

"Cropsey" was the name of the killer in "The Burning", another great early 80's slasher flick. I wonder if they got that name because of this urban legend story ?

Yeah! Its totally the same Cropsey from the burning, same story. The legend of Cropsey has been floating around summer camps in the north east for decades... They write about it on the Cropsey fb page... check it out! http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/pages/CR OPSEY/79662920621?ref=mf

Oh man... I remember this from when I was little... Gonna have to check it out.... There is nothing scarier than real life... I also remember The Burning, good slasher flick but I bet the true story will be far more disturbing... And hey jbklyn, it isn't just an urban legend he really lived there... either way shouts to STRONG ISLAND!!!

Also, why do you homophobes constantly insist on the use of words like "gay" and "fag" on this site? Some of your favorite horror icons are homosexual (Clive Barker for one) and I know that their sexual orientation has never really been an issue for me. Sounds like your either a fucking bigot or maybe... just maybe... that you have some latent and deep seated issues that you are too scared to face... Hmmmmm.... maybe you just haven't met the right man to show you what's what yet...

I love that nothing scares you big tough horror types more than the idea that if a man gave it to you the right way that you might actually like it.

This was a legendary story told around boy scout campfires when I was kid (NY area). I can remember being terrified by the tale .... Very interested!

Cropsey was indeed the name we locals had for the bogeyman in the woods. He was rumored to live right near the Boy Scouts' Pouch Camp. If you were a grade-schooler in the early 80s, then you either teased other kids or were the teased one with the legend of Cropsey. It's possible "The Burning" took the name of Cropsey from the children who taunted each other about the crazy evil man who lived in the woods, but it's also possible that some careless parents spoke of the movie character by name and we kids blended the movie story with the actual legend. Nonetheless, by 1987 we kids learned there was a real live Cropsey, and a true terror hit us all the community. Just like the legend, he lived in hiding in the woods, and just like the legend, he stole kids away and murdered them. This is a documentary; I know of the extensive interviewing and filming that took place - some of it many years ago. It will be chilling to see.
