Breck Eisner Updates 'Black Lagoon' Reboot

Bloody-Disgusting had the chance to catch up with director Breck Eisner on the set of The Crazies earlier today. We’ll have a full report from that set later this week, but today we got an update on the Creature From the Black Lagoon remake that Eisner is directing from a script by Gary Ross.

Creature from the Black LagoonAfter THE CRAZIES, CREATURE is the most likely next project for Eisner, although Universal hasn’t given it the official green light just yet. “I don’t know,” Eisner told press. “We turned in another script. I think they are probably going to see how WOLF MAN does and then we’ll probably know from there.

I haven’t really been on top of it for a month,” he added. “I’ve been in Georgia making [THE CRAZIES]. But I’m hoping. We’ve been on it for two years. We’re all very excited. We came so close to going. We were in prep before the Writer’s Strike.

The look of the Creature is set, although Eisner was careful not to reveal too much. “The creature design is done. McQuarrie did the designs. It’s a combo [of CG and man-in-suit]. For close-up, [it will be] suit work, for moving shots, wide and underwater stuff its probably going to be CG. We’re still R & D’ing the CG stuff of the underwater, but it’s definitely both. Some of the underwater movement of the character can’t be done by a guy in the suit.

The CREATURE remake wasn’t initially envisioned as a 3-D project, but with the current renaissance of the process, Eisner admits it might be a possibility. “We weren’t [considering 3-D] before, but the landscape in the last year has changed. You expect it to be. People have forgotten the original is, but they’ll remember it once the next one comes out.

We’ll have more from Eisner as well as a full report from the set of THE CRAZIES later this week.

YES!!!! This is one film I have always wanted to see updated. I cannot imagine how awesome the creature could look with todays technology! Plus underwater filming has come leaps and bounds since the original. Universal has a great track record with the reboots for the classic monsters. I loved Coppola's Dracula and Frankenstein and the first Mummy was a blast (even if it bore no resemblance to the original whatsoever) and I am excited as hell to see Del Toro as Larry Talbot! I cannot what to see what develops with everyones favorite mermonster!!!!

NOT APPROPRIATE. It.s fine for more 80's stuff like MBV, but not a Universal monster movie. Much too gimmiky.

ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS?!?!? The original 1954 version WAS IN 3D!!!! This was one of the first horror films ever shown 3D! For the love of god, take some time to find out what your criticizing before you start hating! If there was any film that deserves to utilize the new 3D technology it's this one.

Well said COUNT BRADULA. I as well am really ready for the CREATURE update and THE WOLFMAN.

3D hate for a CREATURE remake Seriously? So, as Count Bradula pointed out, some of you actually don't know that both the original CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and its sequel REVENGE OF THE CREATURE were produced and exhibited in 3D? Honestly? I hate to be an ass here, but how exactly is someone who is not aware of something that could fairly be considered common knowledge in any way qualified to tell the filmmakers how to handle their remake? I'm not sure what's worse - maladjusted haters who insist on "fuck"ing everything they don't like just to show how strong (and irrational) their feelings are, or "pasionate fans" who don't even know the most basic facts about the CREATURE films. So much is made about how "disrespectful" Hollywood is for remaking classics, but I can't imagine anything more disrespectful to a film's legacy than someone who knows nothing about a classic movie/character pretending to be a fan or to speak with authority on the subject.

It would be cool if it was done in 3D... But I'm more concerned about the look of the creature himself, I really do hope they keep his design close to the original... like with the Wolfman remake coming out.

Um all you idiots need to shut up! CREATURE DESERVES 3D. The original was 3D. It was the gimmick. It ruled. I saw it in 3D format in the theater at a museum as a kid and it was amazing.

Okay, hey. I'm "all the idiots" who were hating on the 3D. Forgive me, but I was not alive to see it in theatres in the 1950's, so I saw it for the first time on vhs in 2D. I have a great deal of love for that movie, and while Universal does have a good track record for remakes of their monster (I'm going to have to dsagree on the Mummy, but to each his own), I don't like 3D in movies that want me to take them seriously. It works for things like MBV or Friday part 3 to me because it's just fun and the movie itself doesn't try to be any more than that. But I want more than that for this movie, I want it to be GOOD. I don't want to be constantly reminded that I'm watching a movie by having things fly off the screen at me. To me 3D is something that really takes me out of a movie, and for most movies that it's used on, that's fine because they're not terribly enveloping, but I want this to be as good as Coppolla's Dracula or as good as the new Wolfman looks. And with really good filmmaking, i think 3D would only be a distraction. Hopefully James Cameron will shut me up with Avatar, but that hasn't happened yet.

why does everyone hate 3D? its fun, i don't see how it could lessen the experience of a film. I haven't seen a 3D movie where i was so captivated that it was in 3D that i wasn't paying attention to the actual story or goings on. are you all stricken with ADD? The original was in 3D when it was first released. i think that not only would it be a neat little hommage but i enjoy 3D as it is. deadlover, whether or not the movie is in 3D, its not going to suck because of the 3D its going to suck because of Script, acting and directing. case in point you just complained about those 3 things instead of the actual 3D in your closing.

I'm really hoping that if they MUST redesign the creature that that take a cue from Hellboy's Abe Sapien. A cross between that design and Stan Winston Studios "Creature" from Monster Squad would be incredible!!!

That's the thing, deadlover - the original was in 3D and it WAS a very good film. Those of us giving you shit (none of whom were alive to see it in 1954 either, but all of whom still know that it was shown in 3D) are doing so because you and others speaking out against the "gimmick" seem to be operating under the inexplicable assumption that the two things - 3D and quality - are mutually exclusive. The original CREATURE, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, the original HOUSE OF WAX, and a handful of others proved more than half a century ago that such an assumption is both ridiculous and wholly inaccurate. You say, "And with really good filmmaking, i think 3D would only be a distraction.", but there can be no doubt that the films I've just named (in particular, the one whose impending remake sparked this discussion) are examples of good filmmaking - examples in which the added lure of 3D helped make big box office successes. And you only invite further grief when you begin your argument with such eloquent decrees as "FUCK 3D". Many of us here might disagree with your opinion, but some would likely have been less inclined to call you an "idiot" or give you so much shit if you hadn't entered the discussion with such a combative and confrontational (in other words, fanboy) tone.

Beautifully put jkrouskop. Now if only the damn theaters didn't charge me for a pair of friggin glasses every time I go to one of these!!! My pair from Captain Eo still work grrreat!!!

I'm not saying that those movies sucked because of the 3D, but that as far as being pulled in to the story, I think that 3D is a hinderance. That's all. My favorite thing about watching movies is that every once in a while one will be so good and draw you in so well, that you more or less forget that your watching a movie, than you are just experiencing a story, and I can't see that happening in a 3D movie, because it breaks the 4th wall.

I can see your point and respect your opinion deadlover. Now that your posting an intelligent and informed response I find it MUCH easier to see where your coming from. But for me the 3D experience has always made the films that use it well that much more immersive. I guess it's just a point of view kind of thing.

jkrouskop

Though I don't share your opinion, deadlover, I see where you're coming from. But I would offer this as a counterpoint: If the original CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON had been less commercially successful in its initial release, it might have become a footnote in movie history rather than the revered classic that it is. Without the two sequels which directly resulted from its financial success, the Gill-man would not likely have become the iconic monster he is today, regardless of the exceptional quality of the first film. And since there can be no doubt that the fact that it was in 3D had a positive effect on its box office returns but has NEVER stopped anyone from appreciating its quality, the 3D must be viewed as a positive, not a negative. As some here have already pointed out, it will be the script, direction, acting, effects, etc. that determine whether the remake is a good movie or not, not the 3D. And if it is good, I'd personally rather it make $175 mil because of the added gimmick of 3D than $130 mil as a reasonably well-reviewed 2D release. As we know from recent experience, 3D will draw big crowds on opening weekend, but only quality will sustain the film after that. So I say let the 3D bring 'em in and the movie (if it's worthy) keep 'em coming back, rather than gambling that quality alone will attract today's very fickle (and not always astute) audiences.

I first saw REVENGE OF THE CREATURE in 1970...the following year CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. Total, absolute love! It took a few years for me to find-out that they were both originally 3D movies. I've seen BOTH in "Revival Houses" in the last couple of decades...in 3D. There's NO COMPARISON...they CAME TO LIFE in 3D! Go to "ULTIMATE 3D HEAVEN" and inquire about the converter, glasses and DVD needed to see "CREATURE" in PERFECT 3D. There's a cheaper (about $10) form of 3D as well, if you DON'T want to buy the converter and glasses Then EVERYONE can see these two movies the way they were meant to be seen! I know...SPAM!!! But it'll stop the argueing.

Well said Count & jkrouskop. This is one of my holy grail films, one of the films responsible for my love of the genre, so I am hoping they treat it right. I am excited and terrified at the same time. Because of this I appreciate what deadlover is saying. Watching Creature on DVD now, its easy to forget it was a 3D flick, but watching say Friday 13th 3D (prior to this new release) in 2D, its obvious it was a 3D, because the 3D wasn't part of the film, it was the gimmick of the film. The remake of MBV was gimmicky 3D. I for one just want a great, serious monster flick that takes the original seriously and doesn't make it into a teen horror movie, or action/comedy.

3D would almost actually be fitting for this one, considering the original was.
