Platinum Dunes Responds to 'Nightmare' Casting in New Blog

Heading into the weekend we broke the news that New Line Cinema have added both Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) and Kyle Gallner (The Haunting In Connecticut) to the cast of A Nightmare on Elm Street. This evening Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller updated his official blog responding directly to the fans regarding the casting choices. As you all now know, Haley is set to be your brand new Freddy Krueger, replacing the infamous Robert Englund as the child killer from Springwood. Gallner will play Quentin, the "Johnny Depp" character (who is also a podcast host) that's pairing up with Nancy to solve the mystery of the razor-glove wearing dream demon. Click here to read Fuller's post and don't forget that he does in fact read your comments, so go and be constructive.

Well, I kind of always figured it would end up being this guy. Not a bad choice at all. I'll definitely see the remake no matter what, but I'm glad casting news is finally coming in. Not too sure about the guy who's supposed to play Quentin, but I haven't seen his acting skills yet, so I can't say anything for sure. When I last heard Jackie Earle Haley talk about the possibility of playing Freddy, he didn't sound too sure, so hopefully in taking this role he realizes that, if he does a good or great job, he'll be needed for subsequent sequels (of which I am looking forward to. Do I care if the first movie is out yet? Obviously not).

jackie looks creepy enough to play that role anyway, iam glad that you guys didnt go through with billy bob thorton anyway i hope this remake doesn't disapoint because i know that whoever is big fan of these movies has a really high expectations for the upcoming nighmare on elm street. The sequels of the original nightmares have been very cheesy, i just hope that it wouldn't be the case for these films. We hope for the best platinum dunes

I am so extremely happy Jackie Earle Haley got the role! He was honestly (and I'm not just saying that) the only actor I could see in the role but I highly doubted it would in fact be him. I'm also happy with Kyle Gallner although I haven't seen him in anything but he has the look :P

KARLEE WARREN (JUDGING AMY) WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THE ROLE OF NANCY!

PD hit the nail on the head casting this guy. Perfect choice. I'm excited to see this talented actor bring new ,fresh and terrifying dimensions to our beloved razor gloved villian.

Perfect casting! Please try to make the "nightmares" actually "nightmarish" because they weren't in the original films. Think "David Lynch"... A little humor is O.K....but audiences don't need this film to be a "fun flick". The two most successful horror films ever (THE EXORCIST and SIXTH SENSE) didn't have any funny-stuff going on. If Freddy had to say amusing things, keep it sick and minimal. I also don't think he needs to be an "anti-hero"...he killed kids! Hints of molestation would "seal the deal". This IS one remake that was a good idea!

Biohazard- well said. No need for this to be "fun". It's about a child murderer/molester. Keep it nasty and dark and this film will be a winner.

i had some time time to dig up this guy and i am now 100% confident that this will be a great experience. i agree with Biohazard, if we take a trip down memory lane, the first two nightmare films were very dark, very sadistic. with little to no humor from the lips of our "anti-hero". after that the rest of the films until "new nightmare" were very campy. we all know that Fred Kruger is the ultimate perv. but lets try to make an impression that will burn in the minds of the upcomming generations. i know that when i was growing up the original scared the piss out of me, so lets do that rather than make the audience laugh then go home and tell everyone "it was ok..but it was lacking" certainly something i do not ever want to say. Metalmessiah....

Big deal you got an Academy Award actor to play Freddy. So if you got Philip Seymour Hoffman we should have be amazed as well. I am against this entire remake, but will go see it anyways since I have seen every other Nightmare in the theaters

I just wanna say, as others have been saying, I reeeeally hope this movie stays true to the original Nightmare and scares the piss out of a new generation of kids. I will always remember seeing the first nightmare in theaters as a kid and to this day it STILL creeps me the fuck out -- whereas the sequels are just freddy being funny and acting like a clown with fun, creative death scenes. PLEASE dont make this just another sequel as the Friday the 13th "reboot" was...

Why do all these killers need motivation and explanation? You want to scare people, just let them BE the evil, the horror, and all the things that disturb us. Back stories are fine, but I personally find one of the most disturbing elements of any mass murderer being when there is no cut and dry, straight forward reason. Some people just kill. Not for kicks, not because they were abused, not out of revenge. Some kill for reasons personal only to them, and all the hollywood psychoanalysis and Freudian synopsis they try to attach to that can actually diminish the real horror of a killer who kills just because. I always thought of Freddy Krueger as a sort of Groundskeeper Willy from the Simpsons. Socially detached, awkward, but still deeply entrenched in his job and the school he works for. It also gives Kreuger both the tools and opportunity for his original mortal sins. What if when he molested the kids he gave them ketamine and an lsd concoction to leach out of them whatever their greatest fears were. He feeds on nightmares. So when he returns in whatever supernatural form, there is some reason for his use of the nightmare. Personal interest. Nothing more. His increasing knowledge of what terrifies others, makes him completely sociopathic and detached from life. When nothing scares you anymore, you have to create new terrors to fill that NEED. Stretch the limits of decency and safe viewing here. Don't give us Universal nightmares we all know people are scared of. Give us raw, primal, fears that even the most stoic of us would shudder and beg to be saved from. Make us uncomfortable. Instead of giving us another horror film, try to give US nightmares. Oh yeah, and staying "true" to the original line up of cast members is not nearly as important as the script at this point. You have someone who can carry the film on his performance alone now if needed. Just make sure you don't ruin HIS performance by surrounding him by half wit, bubbled headed, Gossip Girl quality teenage actors.

Try making an original movie and none of this remaking classic. Platinum Dunes isn't even interested in respecting classic horror movies. They just use an already established classic and ruin it for money. Screw off!!!

I'm just piping up to support the opinion that this should not be a "fun" film. This film has the potential for being legitimately frightening and genuinely disturbing so please don't ruin it with gimmicky one-liners. Like many others have said: comments from Freddy are fine, if they are dark/twisted and can even contain a shred of sick humour, but he should not be trying to make us laugh. I believe turning Freddy into a sympathetic character would be a very big mistake (I believe the rumours are that he could or could not have been guilty of the crimes he was accused of when he was murdered). The casting so far is top notch and this seems like it's in good hands. I look forward to seeing what happens.

Hey everyone long time reader first time poster. I have been a long time horror fan since I was about 3 years old and "Nightmare" was my fist horror movie I ever saw. Now, I am not for remaking everything, especially classics like NOES, FT13, and TCM but I know there is no changing the fact that these movies WILL get remade, rebooted, or remimaged. My only concern is I heard Jackie was only willing to do one, so Michale Bay better not have any sequals in mind without Jackie donning the claw. Freddy is a character that once you cast, you cannot go back and recast. His image needs to stay consistant. So a plethora of sequels better not come out of this. Let this be a stand alone film like Wes Craven intially wanted it to be, but if you do make more, Jackie has to be Freddy and no one else.

if you want to see Kyle Gallner, watch season 2 of Veronica Mars. he's going to be great in "Nightmare".

Indie is 2006. And kids spend more time on Youtube watching music videos then playing in Itunes. All these "Fresh" ideas seem so unnecessary.
