Writer Talks Making 'It' Remake R-rated

One remake I'm pretty excited for is Warner Bros. Pictures' It, a new adaptation of Stephen King's popular novel that follows a group of kids called the Losers Club that encounter a creature called It, which preys on children and whose favorite form is that of a sadistic clown called Pennywise. Today the first ever interview was posted online with Dave Kajganich, writer of the reboot, who will bring the film to modern day in an R-rated fashion!

"The remake will be set in the mid-1980s and in the present almost equally -- mirroring the twenty-odd-year gap King uses in the book -- and with a *great* deal of care and attention paid to the backstories of all the characters," Kajganich told Dread Central in an exclusive interview. "I think the real twist here is that my pitch to WB -- which they've assured me they're on board for -- is that this will not be PG-13. This will be R. Which means we can really honor the book and engage with the traumas (both the paranormal ones and those they deal with at home and school) that these character endure."

You can read a bit more at the link provided and watch this spot for more news as it comes in.

Sweet. This movie needs a remake. The made for TV crap just will not do.

Sounds cool, but the original Pennywise performance will be tough to top.

awweeesssoooommmmeeee, are they actually going to show the confrontation with IT after they all get back together as adults? because in the original they just left us hanging with a dead dude in a bathtub who wrote IT on the wall, and i really hope this one is a lootttt scarier because the old one barely creeped me out in one scene.

wish they hadn't screwed with the timeframe. Does every fn thing have to take place in the present and recent past. A lot of the charm of the story came from the 50's period

awesome...the book was a thousand times more gruesome than the movie, hopefully now they can put that stuff on film

It's going to be hard to righteously adapt IT into a movie that isn't at least 6 hours long...

_MR_BoneS_ , you made me laugh! But seriously, though the TV movie wasn't scary because it was made for TV, I liked it quite a bit so I look forward to what they can do for it, theatrically. Fingers crossed!

Glad they are still using the mid-80s as a setting, though it should've been late 50s-mid 80s rather than mid 80s to now. The whole greaser thing and way of life back during that time was important to the book. They captured that in the mini-series, as well. Though, considering there was a slight greaser movement comeback during the 80s, they could work that in someway and form(Stray Cats, baby). Other than that, I hope they hire people who are able to make the 80s scenes believable. I don't want to see the 80s look like the modern times with the exception of some stereotypes fo the era. It's like people don't remember what those decades were REALLY like, they just rely on stupid stereotypes of pop culture(lets have this guy have a Flock of Seagulls haircut, and this girl will wear leg warmers!). Considering I was a kid during that time, they BETTER keep it true!

YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! this is what we need! no more crappy PG-13 remakes, but instead R rated masterpieces

now if they will only keep it R rated and not cave into editing it or doing the DRAG ME TO HELL thing and "test" out PG-13 & R rated versions. stick with R and make the movie accordingly. DO NOT water it down, PLEASE! but i'm looking forward to this!

I hope this new version is scary enough, not "shit my pants scary" though, as flesheater123 put it, cuz that would kinda suck for me and those in my immediate vicinity, LMAO!

Make it brutal and scary as possible. If it's a horror film, then make it one. The best King movie that was not ultra violent was THE SHINING (Kubrick's version of course with Nicholson, not the dude from Wings). That was all acting, directing and cinematography that to this day is hard to beat. A top 10 all time horror classic. Nobody has been able to deliver another King novel to the screen that is even close. So c'mon "IT".

the tv movie is actually good and does hold up, its a classic in its own right. grew up on that shit, that said, this remake doesnt bother me. if they had any balls, they would cast tim curry again, he was perfect and i can only imagine what he would be allowed to do in a R rated setting.

I thought the TV version was ok if only for the fact that I finally had a real Beverly Marsh to lust over when I was a kid. How the hell you move this story to another era is beyond me. The book is inudated with pop culture references that make up the charm and the greaser thing is part of the story as well. Are all the monsters going to be changed? In the book they were all the classic ones like the Wolfman and the Mummy, etc. It would be difficult to make one, much less all of those convincingly scary to in a modern day setting.

The T.V. movie sucked, face it. A better version would be welcomed greatly. A hard R at all cost, the book was violent.

Nice! I do have all the same reservations that everyone else has mentioned (the lack of the 50's/greaser angle), but I'd love to see this done with a real budget. Having Tim Curry come back would be ideal, but as long as they can get someone who's convincing and genuinely scary, I'm fine with it. I just hope it isn't filled with crappy looking CGI. The original didn't need it to be convincing and this one doesn't either...come to think of it, MOST horror doesn't, but that's another rant. Bring back practical effects! Where's Rob Botin when you need him?

So... is Beverly going to screw everyone this time around?

They should really try to get Steve Buscemi or Gary Oldman to play Pennywise. Dudes would both do a great job and are definitely both creepy fucking dudes.

If they honor the source material then this WILL be a R rated feature. The kills in the book are gruesome, it was the TV version that toned everything down. Would love to see the leper under the house make an appearance this time around and would also love to see Bill and Ritchies escape from the werewolf as well.

I personally don't have a problem with remakes - especially if they improve the original material. And "IT" is definitely is a film that should be remade. The TV series was absolutely nothing like the book. The only thing good about it was Tim Curry as the clown! The book was one of the best sci-fi/horror books that I ever read, and I hope the remake stays true to the material.
