More Cassie Hack vs 'Eve' Warfare

A few days back we reported on a new indie film entitled Eve, which sounded eerily similar to Rogue Pictures and Relativity Media's project Hack/Slash, a comic adaptation with commercial director Todd Lincoln attached to direct. Today the official synopsis and early one sheet found their way online and have a shocking resemblance to the popular comic series from Devil's Due Publishing.

UHM scored the following art and synopsis: "The film is set in an alternate, more seedy Los Angeles. After discovering her father was the deadliest serial killer of all time, Evelyn makes the decision to track down every psycho she can get her hands on. But these are no ordinary killers, they have supernatural advantages to them - something she must learn to adapt to. She also must learn as to why they are gathering in this city and what their evil intentions are while having to reconcile with her own past."

Hack/Slash, created by Tim Seeley and Stefano Caselli, centers on Cassie Hack, a woman who travels to small towns across the country hunting supernatural slashers in the vein of "Halloween's" Michael Myers, "Friday the 13th's" Jason Voorhees and "A Nightmare on Elm Street's" Freddy Krueger. She is partnered on her journey with Vlad, a hulking companion who serves as her protector. Her career began when she was forced to kill her own serial killer mother known as "The Lunch Lady" who killed kids who used to pick on Cassie.

Pretty damn similar if you ask me...

How inferior. Fuck you Brian Metcalf. You "Hack" bitch. You just made the list. Shame on Rogue for taking their sweet merry time getting Hack/Slash to the screen. Hope you're having a fun sucking on Joel Silver's tiny hairy balls.

If you look closley below Eve, you can see Jason's hockey mask, and Leatherface's chainsaw which is south-west in the poster.

Tim, don't you have any sort of legal recourse here? This is a blatant ripoff based on your excellent work...what's next, she teams with an oversized deformed partner who wears a mask and calls himself Vlod?

RIP OFF!!!

I don't know that there's much I can do. I mean, I don't try to say Hack/Slash is a completely original idea, and unlike anything else. I mean, I was fine with a similar CONCEPT. But, this LOOK like my comic. This poster looks like the poster to the Hack/Slash play. More than anything it bums me out. Obviously, comics have less exposure as a medium than film does, even Direct to DVD films. It's one thing when a knock off movie is based on a much wider release movie like Transmorphers or something. But, in this case, this looks cribbed from my comic, which I struggle to put out every month to like 7000 people. Kinda messed up y'know? TIM

Tim, the sad part is that if a H/S flick does materialize it will be accused of knocking off this. Sigh. Maybe a nice lawsuit will bring more attention to H/S. Earlier posts suggested its not as well known as it is in my neck o' the woods (Canada). Keep up the good work, don't get discouraged. Great work on Halloween Nightdance too. if its any consolation I lost all my Hack/Slash from Land of Lost Toys #2 to current when I was broken into last month, so the thieves had good taste and at least the comic reached a new audience. I'll keep spreading the word.

If Tim indeed has no recourse, the thing to do would be to ignore this. Don't buy it, don't rent it. And if Bloody Disgusting loves HACK/SLASH like I know they do, they'll stop giving this project press. It's blatant theft, and we in the horror community should let this douche know that it's not cool.

LOL they ripped off hack/slash big time. But hey Those fuckovers aren't doing shit, so these dudes decided hey fuck let me hop on the bandwagon and make a movie then. GOOD LUCK>

I'm glad that something is coming out. I'm still pissed about how Warner Bros. held onto the rights of "Queen of the Damned" until the year before they were going to lose the rights, then they made that 101 min MTV music video they called a movie. I tried to keep an open mind and I remember distinctly telling others to calm down until the movie was released. Then, after seeing the film, I had to give Jorge Saralegui a piece of my mind, expressing how the film lacked structure - even if it wasn't going to stay true to the novel, at least have a damn structure. So, this same situation could happen with "HACK/SLASH" - bring on "EVE" because it's not being made under the same duress as flicks being made a year prior to a loss of rights (just for the sake of having the movie under the company's name). I'm also still waiting for American McGee's "Alice" and Eli Roth's theatrical version of Stephen King's "Cell." If cheap ass versions come out, that'll at least appease me partially. There was so much directorial interruption with "The Invasion" - I like the film but it's not as hot as it's predecessors. I know the whole world will disagree with me, but Nicole Kidman is what made the movie good for me (along with the sick infection twist). That movie had quite an interruption in its production, but things worked out. A cheesy flick called "Invasion of the Pod People" surfaced on video at the same time - despite the unnecessary lesbian subplot, the flick actually freaked me out... the pod people don't need you to be asleep, they just show up and choke your ass to death. So, I'm sure I'll find something to love about both of these flicks.

I do put out the comic every month y'know. EVERY MONTH. The adaptation may be taking it's time, but I always put the book out. TIM SEELEY

Aw, Tim - I hope there was no disrespect in my previous posting. Your comic is soooo good and I hope it's done justice on-screen because you deserve it.

I read the comic but it really doesn't sound that similar. I mean Eve has no sidekick. Its like copying Lethal weapon without having a partner. This is no disrespect to your comic because I'm a huge supporter but as I was reading other comments, alot of people had good points. Armageddon and Deep Impact were the same. According to UHM, the concept art was created back in 1998.

Tim, I hate to say it, but if I had released my comic out without hearing about Eve, I could have been sued by you and by Ratio. I mean I do notice big differences now that I picked up some of the comics. Edgetwist does have a point, Cassie and Vlad are working together and Eve is solo. The book I was reading, they are in a cabin in montana and Eve is located entirely in an alternate LA. The killers are children and in Eve, its more like they're going after Jason and Leatherface types. And even though Cassie's mother is a serial killer it says she tracks her down to kill her. In Eve, it says her father WAS the greatest serial killer of all time meaning he's now dead. So she can't go after him. Now I do believe you have great creativity and I'm not saying its a knockoff. It's just that I came up with the same idea and I also heard that Buffy's people were upset when Ultraviolet came out. I read an article saying there was alot of grief Rob Zombie was getting with Tyrannosaurus Rex because of The Wrestler.

Filthswine

Wait a minute, you're going to get mad at Brian Metcalf for coming out with a cool movie idea? I agree with Phoenison here. If Brian came out with a typical teen slasher movie or zombie film people wouldn't say jack shit to him, except whisper that its the same ol' crap. But now that he's making a movie with the same cool premise, everyone's pissed. He's not even making a comic book here. And if all he's trying to do is copy Hack/Slash, then you have nothing to worry about because it will just copy them and will be a pale comparison. But if its completely different in watching, then you'll know. It's interesting because I also have been hearing alot on the Rob Zombie Stuff but what's he going to do? Drop the film? I don't know Brian or what his thoughts have been on this but I can say that films take a long time as Tim knows. I read on UHM that he tried to make this film before Fading and I read another article that he tried to make Fading back in 2001 with Thomas Ian Nicholas. It may not be true but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt here and as Cannibal stated, she had the exact same idea.

Okay..so links don't post well. Look, I'm not freaking out or anything. I posted what I felt about how similar it looks to my book. I was fine with the concept being similar. That shit happens. But, it is getting an awful lot closer to the comic. And, I'm not the only one, or the first who noted it. Thanks! TIM

Okay, I have never in my entire life felt the need to sign up and reply to a thread before tonight as this is deeply personal to me. I have been watching this and the other thread over the last couple days here. A few years ago, I was shopping a script around Hollywood with some known studios. Turns out that a major movie with the same premise came out which was A.I. I was pissed, I accused them of stealing from me and everything. Well, after burning my bridges, I learned that the director (The original one, Kubrick) who was the creator did come up with the same idea and he mentioned it in an article 10 years earlier then me. My idea was about a boy who wants to be human, also derived from Pinnochio. I about cried to myself watching this in theatres. I felt really dumb because I learned that alot of people do come up with the same ideas. And alot steal scripts from already made films out there and recycle them. I met the director of Borderland once and his film was going to come out the same time Hostel did, but Lionsgate decided to wait on it. Then afterwards, he was accused of copying Eli Roth. I have no clue about Eve but I can tell you its different enough that it really wouldn't concern me. And it just means that Brian, Cannibal10 and Tim think alike. And I feel bad for Brian because all he may be wanting to do is entertain us with cool movies and he seems to be fighting for our genre. That's my input on this.

bloodysandy

I understand where you're coming from Tim. I really do. But again, if I were to create a poster that says its about a killer killing serial killers, I'd also have stuff like the freddy glove and other stuff just to hit the point across. And sexy chicks are expected in hollywood. It helps drive sales tremendously. I'm sure Brian's film will have a lot of nudity for the sales oversees. I can only speculate from the perspective of that I was there working in that industry but got blacklisted. Be happy you can still do so. As I read earlier, it is free press. And if you met Brian Metcalf, would you honestly want to be angry and accuse him or would you appreciate the fact that you have similarities and is driving the genre forward. We're not giving him a chance as a filmmaker to show what he can do. When you read the two premises side by side, they aren't that similar, they won't play similarly in film because Eve does focus on one character. Mr. Disgusting along with other fans of yours feel they're getting jipped here without giving Brian a chance which is not fair. but like Filthswine said, if Brian did a film about a killer stalking teenagers, nobody would say anything. If I were given the chance to do AI then in the end, people would call it different because my concept and Stanley's were closer than your's and Brian is by far and I hate plagiarism.
