'Let the Right One In' Subtitles Debacle

Yesterday evening Icons of Fright posted a story that calls out Magnolia Pictures for their sub-par subtitling of the DVD/Blu-ray release of Let the Right One In. At the site you'll find side-by-side comparisons to see just how f*cked up it gets. Magnolia's response? They'll fix it, but won't replace it. Personally I don't care, I like the English dub better (just kidding). Read on for the skinny.

Here's what Magnolia tells The Digital Bits:

"We've been made aware that there are several fans that don't like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version."

We asked Magnet some follow-up questions, specifically how people will be able to identify the new discs, when they'll be available in stores and if there will be an exchange program for those who have the existing version. Here's what they said:

"There are no exchanges. We are going to make an alternate version available however. For those that wish to purchase a version with the theatrical subtitles, it will be called out in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package where it will list SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH."

This is really fucking annoying. I love this movie, and I bought the Blu-Ray and just grazed through it a bit--waiting to watch the whole thing this weekend. What a bunch of assholes.

Yeah it was pretty much super gay that they did that. I mean seriously? Why on earth change the subs.

Hey guys can we forgive them already? They made a mistake and are trying to make amends. Hell if it weren't for them; we wouldn't get so many awesome ass foreign films like this one and "The Host" and "Big Man Japan" in theaters in the first place.

This kinda sucks. I actually wish I wouldn't have read this article. I will probably think about this every time I watch it now. But, regardless it was still an amazing film.

The Blu Ray version contains two subtitle tracks, shitty new one, and the original. The only problem with the original is that it's for the hearing impaired.

that sucks for anyone who got the shitty subtitles though. they should be able to exchange them since the studio is admitting they fucked up. and how many people are gonna get the shitty subtitles and not even know there is a better version available.

Well this sucks, I just picked this up, haven't even had a chance to watch it but I definitely would have picked up on that difference. I saw it 3 times at the theater so I know the movie fairly well. They really should offer an exchange.

Yeah that was pretty much an amateur mistake. Why the hell did they think we would want altered lines for the movie?

wow, Im really happy I havent bought this yet, I saw it in theaters then watched online, so I wasnt in a rush to get the dvd. Today I saw it at futureshop for 20 bucks, I almost got it but something inside me told me not to. I guess this means Im psychic.

I'm just curious to know why they did this to begin with? It makes no sense.

Hey gang....2 days ago did an official letter to Mangolia about not offering an exchange program as well. Readers can e-mail to dvd@magpictures.com. Tell them you bought the film and that they seriously need to reconsider offering a main-in replacement program. Please keep the letters professional.

I have some more bad news guys. Magnolia is also putting out Timecrimes next week. I hope they don't fuck that one up also.

I'm so glad I didn't buy this yet. This is such bullshit. The least they could do is let people who did purchase it exchange the crap version. That's what most studios would do. I mean, it's great that they are going to put a new version out with the subtitles that were in the theatrical version, but to screw over the people who already bought it? That's not right.

I love this movie and wouldn't have known about this subtitle fiasco otherwise. Thanks for letting me know that there is a difference. I'm pretty impressed with the studio's response though. They listened to fan input and they are doing something about it. That's pretty fast.

I don't think the changes are that bad. I mean they still say what the dialogue needs them to say. the meaning of the story is there and the simplification helps keep the flow and pace of them film going. I wouldn't call it a disgrace at all. Many times a phrase can be translated more than one way and the fact is that sometimes you can't translate everything literally; it would take away from the film, you wouldn't get to see anything but the subtitles. I did some research and the translations are fine. i don't see a reason to get upset. The film is still good and the experience of watching it is still great. Give it another try and you'll see that it isn't bad at all! But I also think it's great that Magnolia is listening to their fans and will come out with a new version of the DVD. More often than not big studios seem unaccessable, but I am happy to hear that Magnolia is listening!

Too bad the bluray doesn't have bd-live on it. Else it would be an easy fix.

This is without a doubt one of the most vicious and nastiest corporate moves I have ever - ever - had the displeasure of experiencing. The vile, disgusting Magnet should be ashamed of thmselves, 100 percent, for doing this to consumers.

And I will remain forever convinced this was done as a delibate move. They had a cheaper subtitle source for the translation, didn't want to pay someone, did the subtitles, got flak for it, and saw an opportunity to devastate their customer base again.

I just sold mine on Amazon and will be buying it again as soon as I find a copy with the correct subtitles.

I loved this movie and I've been on a mission looking in the back of each dvd I find for the right subtitles and I give up. When exactly is this new version coming out if it isnt out already because I cant find the correct version any where I look
